NHS endorses Nintendo Wii Fit Plus game

Thumb's up by NHS is even larger incentive to buy Wii Fit Plus for your kids now

After years of demonising the computer game industry, the NHS has performed a giant u-turn and sparked controversy by endorsing the new Wii Fit Plus game, making it the first game to be approved by the department of health.

The latest edition to the hugely successful Wii Fit range, which goes on sale this Friday, will sport the NHS’s Change4Life logo in both its advertising campaign and product packaging. Aimed primarily at children, the Change4Life programme is a campaign by the NHS used to encourage more exercise and a healthier lifestyle.

Although this marks the first link between the NHS and the games industry, it is not the first time the Department of Health has come under fire for questionable partnerships. Previous partners providing funding for the Change4Life programme have included the likes of Pepsi and Cadbury, two companies not renowned for their health products.

Unlike Pepsi and Cadbury, the Wii Fit does promote a healthy outlook and encourages exercise, albeit in an unconventional way. The new Wii Fit Plus comes fully equipped to target your problem areas with a range of exercise regimes specifically designed to each area of your body. So, whether you're worried by your thunder thighs, bingo wings or muffin top, Wii Fit Plus is ready to tone you up.

Following years of lambasting the gaming industry for encouraging a lazy, inactive lifestyle and contributing to the obesity crisis, the emergence of this partnership with the Wii’s creators, Nintendo, has surprised many of the NHS’s critics. Despite these concerns, this endorsement is a big boost not only for Nintendo but the video games industry as a whole, and is a long way from when they were used as examples of how not to live a healthy life by the NHS in an early Change4Life advertising campaign.
