The best and worst of Sci-Fi gadgets

Sci-Fi gadgets: sometimes ambitious, always cool.

We don't live on the moon or have rocket cars, and it's all Hollywood's fault... Probably. T3 counts down the best (and worst) Sci-Fi gadgets ever

Bearing in mind most modern mobile phones carry more onboard computing prowess than Apollo 11, it must be a scary prospect designing technology for Sci-Fi shows and films. Sometimes, no matter how futuristic you go it’ll look outdated 10 years down the line. On the other hand, dreaming up tech of the future can leave people upset when it doesn’t arrive – especially when you stamp an overly optimistic date on it.

Film and TV seems besotted with the future though, and that won’t change anytime soon. With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the best gadgets and tech we’ve been shown by the industry’s biggest geeks: the ones we got, the ones we’re still waiting on, the ones on their way, the impossible ones and the ones that we just don’t need.

Click the links below to get going. As always, if we’ve forgotten anything or you disagree, let us know below.

We’ve had that for years!

Technology moves at a startling pace. If you think something’s 500 years away, it’s probably only 5. Here are the gadgets from the future that look outdated.

- What we got

Where oh where are our robots?

We were promised the moon and we got Milton Keynes. When Hollywood minds get going, physics takes a back seat. Here’s ambitious gadgets and some preposterously Panglossian dates.

- What we didn’t get

Patience, young Padowan

Consumer technology only becomes available once production costs become small enough to justify selling the product at a widely attainable price. Thus, these gadgets just need a bit more work…

- What’s on the way

It’ll never happen

Whilst the wonders of science are many and varied, there are some thing’s we just have to come to terms with not being possible. Here’s the futuristic tech we won’t be seeing any time soon.

- What’s impossible

I don’t think I’ll be needing one of those, thanks.

We’re all for tech that makes our life easier, but some of Sci-Fi’s ideas are just useless, unappealing, or worse. Here’s the gadgets and tech that we’d rather avoid.
