Sneakers and fashion were never more closely linked than in 2017 – and this year is no different.
While 2018 has only just begun, there’s a slate of new sneakers releasing in the coming months that are sure to change collections, style trends and the industry as a whole.
- These are the 10 best sneakers you can actually buy
- Looking for something a little more functional? These are the best running shoes
- The Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 "Sesame" is our favourite colourway yet
Here we’ve rounded up some of the best sneaker releases coming in 2018 from Nike, Adidas, Balenciaga and more.
Virgil Abloh x Nike Air Jordan 1
While the online gridlock to buy the Virgil Abloh x Nike Air Jordan 1 meant you probably didn’t cop a pair late last year, the good news is that a new all-white colourway is releasing.
Teased at Paris Fashion Week FW18, this is guaranteed to be a tough one to get hold of, but would definitely become a centrepiece in your collection.
Arguably the most important sneaker drop of 2017, this new Virgil Abloh Air Jordan 1 is expected to release later this year.
Balenciaga Triple S
Balenciaga created massive buzz last year with the release of its Triple S trainer, helping to maintain its status as one of the most innovative – and controversial – fashion houses of the moment.
While the Triple S was obviously designed to stand out in your Instagram feed, in the flesh this is no meme. This is the sneaker for in-the- know fashion kids, and one which heavily influenced the "ugly" sneaker trend of last year.
The highly sought-after silhouette was hard to get hold of even while retailing at almost £1000, and it won’t be any different this year. But with a recent restock, one of which being the distressed black version pictured above, this will certainly continue to appear on the fashion set’s feet in 2018.
Nike Air VaporMax Plus
Nike’s Air Vapormax made a splash when it first released last year, giving the brand a much-needed revitalisation after the enormous hype Adidas created with its hyped Boost sneakers.
While we saw an array of colourways drop in 2017, these hybrid kicks – fusing an Air Max Plus upper to a Vapormax midsole – drew significant hype toward the tail-end of last year. That momentum isn’t letting up in 2018. Expect to see this silhouette crop up a lot throughout the year.
The Vapormax midsole, with its hint of deconstructed design, brought Nike’s legendary Air Max technology – which originated in the late 1980s – into the present and will carry it into the future.
Whether you’re looking for a slightly offbeat design, or a sneaker that will refresh your rotation, the Vapormax Plus is definitely one to watch.
Pharrell x Adidas NMD Human Race Trail
While it may seem like any silhouette that Adidas adds a Boost sole to will become popular, the Three Stripes’ collaboration with Pharrell Williams are over and above in terms of design.
The original NMD was a blockbuster when it first dropped, but now seems overhyped and overdone after the follow-up NMD R2 failed to gain the same attention from sneakerheads. However, the Pharrell x adidas NMD Human Race collab has received a steady string of releases – but without an oversaturation of new colourways and announcements.
The Adidas NMD Hu Trail, pictured above, is a drop from the collaboration that matches a clean colourway to the silhouette. Right in time for a spring wardrobe refresh, this one is set to release on February 23.
Adidas Futurecraft 4D
Still a way from attaining mainstream popularity, the tech-focused Adidas Futurecraft 4D has all the makings of a blockbuster. While you probably haven’t seen one of these in the wild yet, releases are becoming more frequent as Adidas carefully avoids cannibalising sales of its other high-end sneakers, particularly those with Boost soles.
Retailing for around $373, the “Ash Green” colourway dropped this month. Keep an eye on this one as the release schedule picks up momentum throughout the year.
Chanel SS18 Footwear Collection
Chanel has announced a vibrant collection of shoes for SS18. Featuring two high-tops and a low-top, these colourful kicks are the perfect statement pieces whether you’re a style maven or simply looking to refresh your wardrobe for spring.
Designed with lambskin and calfskin leather and finished with intense orange, pink and blue combinations, these are sure to be some of the most attention-grabbing kicks you’ll see in 2018. The high-top pictured above will set you back around £1200.
YEEZY Desert Rat 500
As the insane hype surrounding Kanye West’s collaborations with Adidas comes and goes, the YEEZY of the moment is the Desert Rat 500. Pictured above in a "Blush" colourway, the rapper’s recently-released silhouette is doing the rounds and will definitely continue making its mark well into 2018.
Just as the YEEZY Boost’s design divided opinion, drawing both a rabid following as much as an intense dislike from some in the fashion crowd, the Desert Rat 500 fits squarely within the "ugly" sneaker trend, while also allowing streetwear heads to style themselves just like Kanye does on the ‘gram.
