Facebook Home might not be a 'phone' after all

Leak of software suggests it is a launcher replacement for Android, rather than a customisation of the OS itself

The Facebook Home may be less of a phone and more of a skin for Android-based devices, according to a leaked version of the soon to be revealed software.

Facebook is preparing an event for the launch of Home in the next couple of days. Up until now, it had been expected that a Facebook Phone would be dedicated HTC device.

However, Android Police has reportedly got its hands on a system dump from the rumoured phone. According to AP, Facebook Home will be a launcher replacement that runs on top of HTC's own Android skin, Sense 4.5.

Android Police were unable to log into Facebook with the software however. Facebook appears to have restricted access to Facebook employees only for the time being.

The details means it is less likely that Facebook Home will be a rewriting of Android, or even its own OS. Rather, it would appear it will essentially be an extension of what the existing Facebook app for Android can do.

The website also suggests that because of the nature of the software, it may even be released as an application for other Android phones; not just HTC.
