Samsung HMX-H106 SSD camcorder gets retail launch

High-capacity SSD with HD comes at a high price

First glimpsed at this year's CES, Samsung's flagship SSD-based HMX-H106 camcorder is finally hitting the market.

The camera has just launched in stores in its native Korea, with a US launch already scheduled for the end of May. UK? Well, we would expect it to appear in time for summer, just in time for your holiday in the sun. For a not inconsiderable cash outlay, you get the first camera that packs 64GB of SSD storage, which translates to a healthy 12 hours of 1920 x 1080 pixel video, more than enough for covering the average wedding, should the happy couple want to be captured in 'warts 'n' all' high-def.

If you need more, there's also an SD/SDHC slot on-board, as well as a Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan lens with 10x zoom, a time lapse recording mode, a 4.7-megapixel stills sensor, 2.7-inch LCD screen, a built-in strobe flash and for that shaky hand, optical image stabilisation.

The HMX-H106 is already up for pre-order in the US for the equivalent of £600, although we suspect that price is likely to hike itself up a fair bit when it hits these shores. We'll keep you posted.
