Super-thin screen set to land in 2009

Start saving now and you could be the envy of your mates with the first OLED TV in the UK, the Sony XEL-1, which hits the UK market early in 2009.

And it really is a thing of rare beauty. The screen itself has a thickness of just 3mm, with all the connectivity contained within the stand below. There's even a matching slimline remote, ideal for losing down the side of the sofa. And of course, there's the small matter of the 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, likely to produce mind-blowing images from a diminutive 11-inch screen.

But it's not all good news. Let's be honest, that Hollywood blockbuster just isn't going to cut it on an 11-inch screen, while the price is likely to be around the £1,500 mark, around twice the price of a decent big screen LCD. And with Sony planning on producing larger models next year, do you really want to be stuck with the most expensive bedside TV in history? That's down to you - and you have around five months to think about it.
