Digital book worms rejoice

The first Sony Reader, the PRS-505 was an absolute sensation upon its UK launch last year, so we were delighted to hear that two new devices would be heading our way in early September this year.

We were treated to a first hands-on with the Sony Reader Pocket Edition and the Sony Reader Touch Edition and we must say we're very impressed with the progress both devices have made.

The Touch Edition, which will set you back £249, atones for the fact that the touchscreen PRS-700 never made it to UK shores. It features a full and responsive six-inch touchscreen, the facility to anotate your texts with a stylus and also highlight passages that you may be studying. You also have access to the Oxford English dictionary from within texts. Just double click on a single word and it'll serve up the definition.

The Pocket Edition, as the name suggests, scales down the screen to five inches, but boosts the internal storage from 160 books to a whopping 350. Sadly there's no room for external memory or an audio out, but the battery life has been boosted to two weeks (6800 page turns to be exact) from a single charge, meaning you won't get stranded on the last chapter while away on your hols. The Pocket Edition is a little more modestly priced at £179.
