Nokia N82
The latest N-Series phone is Nokia's best yet. Great camera, speedy web, brilliant maps and stunning good looks.
Nokia clearly doesn't like to mess around. Already in 2007 they've raised the mobile stakes with the N95, made GPS standard cellular fare with the Navigator and thrown in the 8GB toting N81 for good measure.
And now, we have the N82. Laden with more goodies than Santa's sleigh, it's a sure sign that Nokia is the out and out leader when it comes to multimedia mobiles.
Snap-a-roo
The 5-megapixel camera is a winner. Equalling the N95's peeper is no mean feat, and with a Carl Zeiss lens and proper flash, snaps are crisp and sharp. With face detection, it's ideal for group shots of everyone barrelling around in dank, smelly nightclubs. Add an accelerometer for viewing in landscape and this really is a beast. In fact, it's so good, you can leave your point and shoot at home. This'll do the job just as well.
Likewise, video is excellent and is even more fun thanks to the TV out cable that comes bundled with the phone. Instant clips of your missus brewing up , or just covert CCTV of scallies trashing your wing mirrors. Great.
Web monkey
Web-wise, HSDPA keeps things ticking along nicely, and, like other N Series mobiles, navigating pages is dead easy.
As for mapping, Nokia has come a long way since we first tried to find a route to the nearest pub and waited 15 minutes for a GPS signal on our fledgling N95. Nokia Maps more than hold their own and the satnav is quicker than a post-natal Paula Radcliffe.
Symbian's S60 software is, as ever, great to use and none too sluggish. We can't wait for the touch version to drop in 2008. and if Nokia can keep up their end, then a certain Apple product could be in for some serious competition.
