UK police to be outfitted with smartphones from 2010
It's not just suits who have a BlackBerry in their pocket now...
From March next year, when a copper pulls you over for speeding, or admonishes you for littering, expect to see a smartphone strapped to their belt. The National Policing Improvement has announced that over 30 forces already use smartpphones, but that figure is set to increase within the next five months.
According to research, police officers with smartphones spend 30 minutes less actually in the police stations doing paperwork, with the smartphones allowing them to receive briefings, access databases or send back reports when on the go. This is a result of £80 million of funding from the government, and works out at roughly £270 per year for each police officer.
The BBC interviewed Inspector Jim Hitch of the Bedfordshire Police, who claimed that the addition of smartphones for each officer has been such a success that his staff is spending more time on the streets, being effective. Indeed, one of his staff snapped a photo of a footprint and sent it back to HQ, where they found a match for the suspect on their database.
Of course, there are concerns over security, battery life and the cost of handing every police officer a BlackBerry, but it's nice to see a positive story about the police for once.
