Nokia 5800 Trekkie edition mobile revealed
It's a phone, Jim, but not as we know it
Star Trek is gearing up for the release of its 11th feature film, imaginatively named ‘Star Trek’ and it just wouldn’t be Hollywood without a cascade of shiny new gadget tie-ins to herald its arrival. Nokia has kindly stepped in to provide a special Star Trek edition of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, once known as the Tube.
Disappointingly, the Nokia 5800 Star Trek edition will not offer seamless ship-to-ship communications, it won’t allow you to co-ordinate land parties and it won’t come with a Bluetooth Combadge attachment either. It will, however, be packed to the rafters with special Star Trek wallpapers, screensavers and eight ring tones. Yay. Rumour has it that asking it to 'beam you up' will do absolutely nothing; colour us deeply unimpressed.
Fortunately, there is a special ‘Phaser application’, which could rescue the whole endeavour by allowing you to transform your humble office cubicle into the surface of hostile alien moon. That’ll show those iPhone Lightsaber losers. Or it could just make phaser noises at the touch of a button.
There are three different versions available, in red, blue or black/silver. Underneath its shallow lick of Star Trek paint, it’s the same as an ordinary Nokia 5800 and that’s no bad thing. You’ve got a 3.2-inch touchscreen, 3.2-megapixel camera and GPS. It’s available from the May 1st and will be available from free on contract, from Vodafone, O2, Orange or T-Mobile.
