COOL-ER tries to make e-readers sexy, gets Google in to help
Google Books packaged up into nice PDFs by UK-based e-reader company
Interead, which makes an apparently "cool" electronic book reader called the COOL-ER, has signed a deal with Google to distribute the books of digitised library Google Books on its coolerbooks.com web site.
This makes it the first non-US "ebookstore" to offer the over-one-million public domain books gathered together by Google, with the catch being... there's no catch. They're free. There's no law regarding these out-of-copyright books. You can just as easily download text files of them from the internet for guilt-free reading, but coolerbooks.com will at least package them up in 19 different file formats for ease of access. They know how funny people can be about file formats.
The company's COOL-ER e-reader is available in a wide range of wacky colours if you now suddenly feel very excited by books, while the controversial Google Books remains entrenched in its fiendishly complex war for the loyalty of the book-reading masses against traditional paper-based book seller Amazon.
UPDATE: From tomorrow, the British Library's ‘New Ways of Reading’ display will feature a COOL-ER reader on show for you to have a play with - alongside the two new Sony e-readers, the Pocket and Touch.
