The iPad Pro was last updated in early 2021 and the latest version included desktop-level performance from the Apple M1 processor, along with a new smart front camera and 5G connectivity. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro model gets a class-leading Mini-LED display with huge HDR video capabilities.

Beyond those, the new models are incredible similar to the previous models from 2020, down to the design and the Apple Pencil 2 support – so get the latest and greatest tablet if you want, but don't hesitate to pick up the previous models if you see a lower price for them and you want to keep the costs down! If you're not sure if the Pro is for you, check out our guide to the best iPad deals and the best iPad Mini deals.

The bigger iPad Pro is identical to the current 11-inch model. with one major different: the screen. The 12.9-inch model uses a mini-LED display, which is brighter than most TVs and offers incredible HDR contrast – it's the one to get if you've got money to spend on the best of the best, if you want the biggest digital canvas to draw on, or if you want the video quality on any tablet. It's not quite as easy to slide into a rucksack of course, or to balance on your lap, but it's an incredibly sleek and powerful device – and you get the extra screen real estate for iPadOS features such as Split View and Slide Over.

The iPad Pro 11-inch doesn't have the HDR screen, but beyond that there's really no difference between the 11-inch and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro except the screen size, the overall dimensions and the weight. They each have different display resolutions, but the same pixel density. Oh, and the 11-inch one is cheaper, obviously – and easier to hold in one hand.

The previous model of iPad Pro doesn't have the desktop-level M1 processor, but is still plenty powerful. It doesn't have the HDR screen either – the screen matches the overall quality of the current iPad Pro 11-inch, though, so is still top-tier. Otherwise, the old model is extremely similar to the new one.
