Sony Reader app to land on Android and iOS in 2010

new app to boost Sony's ebook reader portfolio

Reader app to bring Sony ebooks to smartphones before Christmas.

With Sony's Reader devices hardly flying off the shelves amid stiff competition from the Amazon Kindle and the Apple iPad, Sony is taking a new approach by preparing a Reader app for Android and iPhone.

The Reader app, which will join the Kindle, and numerous other apps on Google and iOS powered smartphones, should be available as a free download from the App Store and the Android Market within the next month.

Reader will offer full access to purchase books from Sony's digital library and current owners of Sony Readers (both of you), will be able to sync books across the two devices.

Like the Kindle app for iPhone, iPad and Android it'll display books and publications in full colour and there's also rumblings that you'l be able to change the background colour of what you're reading. Downloaders will also be able to bookmark and annotate their purchases from within the app.

Sony Reader for iPhone, iPad and Android is expected to become available before the close of 2010.
