A law firm contracted by Samsung has hired the services of the judge that ordered Apple to publish an apology to the South Korean firm on its website.

Sir Robin Jacob – now retired from the judiciary – has been hired as a consultant by Foss Patents in Samsung's lawsuit against Ericsson.

Earlier reports suggested that the judge had been hired directly by Samsung. However, despite clarifications from Samsung about his relationship to the company, questions are still being asked if it is appropriate Sir Robin Jacob to work with Samsung in any capacity.

Legally he isn't breaking the law, but many commentators have said it is perhaps inappropriate for him to be working for a company he previously ruled in favour of.

Clarifying its relationship with Sir Robin Jacob, Samsung said "[He] is not a legal representative of Samsung Electronics. A highly reputed intellectual property expert and academic, Sir Robin has been contracted as an expert by a law firm that represents Samsung Electronics in its case against Ericsson."
