Apple adds gifting option to iBooks

Apple has finally begun allowing iTunes customers to gift book purchases to another user.

A new function within the iBook store offers the ability to “gift this book”. The function was first spotted by MacWorld.

Apple’s primary competitor Amazon has offered the functionality for a number of years with its Kindle devices.

eBooks aren’t the first digital content that Apple has allowed its customers to gift to others. It has long allowed customers to gift apps and music to other iPhone, iPad and iPod owners.

Until recently, the option didn’t exist for its eBooks. It appears Apple may have been pushing to introduce it ahead of the busy Christmas period.

Users wishing to gift an ebook can now select “Gift this Book” from a drop down menu next to the price. Those gifting the book can also give a personalised message to the person receiving the gift.

As with other Apple products, a delivery date can be set in the future – such as Christmas Day. However, books can only be gifted to someone if they are in the same country as the sender.
