Fending off competition from multiplayer behemoth StarCraft II and Activision's first-person bullet-a-thon Call of Duty: Black Ops, Valve's Portal 2 took home the award for Ultimate Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards, while also picking up a nomination for 2011's best action game.
Fallout: New Vegas took best RPG, while Starcraft II and Black Ops did win the consolation prizes of Best Strategy Game and Best Shooter, respectively. The One To Watch Award, which tips the best game still to be released in the run-up to Christmas, went to fantasy epic Skyrim, itself facing stiff competition from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3.
Also namechecked was Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog, who picked up an award for Outstanding Contribution to gaming (although not personally).
The Golden Joysticks are voted for entirely by the public, rather than a judging panel. This year over two million gamers cast votes.
