Apple’s iTunes App Store now touts more than 500,000 mobile applications, app specialists Chop, 148apps and Chillingo have claimed.
Revealing the App Store milestone via an infographic, the three companies have announced Apple’s App Store, which offers content for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, now hosts more than half a million apps with 37 per cent of all applications available to download free of charge.
Apple announced back in January that it had totalled more than 10 billion app downloads less than three years after the service launched. Speaking at the 10 billion download announcement Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing, Philip Schiller announced: "With more than 10 billion apps downloaded in just two and a half years, a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone, the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams."
Launching with just 500 apps in July of 2008 Apple’s App Store racked up a reported 10 million app downloads in its opening weekend. Since then the service has gone from strength to strength with global mega hit Angry Birds proving the service’s most popular download spending 275 days atop the download charts to date.
