OMEGA reimagines the Seamaster Planet Ocean with new case and colours – but it’s the caseback I love most
OMEGA’s gives the Seamaster Planet Ocean a modern upgrade
QUICK SUMMARY
OMEGA has launched the fourth generation of the Seamaster Planet Ocean.
Available in three new colours and watch heads, the Seamaster Planet Ocean is thinner than its predecessors and has a fun seahorse emblem on the caseback.
OMEGA is back with the fourth generation of its popular Seamaster Planet Ocean watch. A reinvention of the original design, OMEGA has unveiled seven new watches, featuring three new colours and watch heads in a slimmer and flatter size – but it’s the caseback I like the most.
The Seamaster Planet Ocean originally debuted back in 2005, so a full 20 years later, OMEGA is giving it a new modern upgrade. The new watches all measure 42mm – same as the original – but they have a much slimmer size and thickness so they sit flusher on the wrist.
Previously, the Seamaster Planet Ocean had a 16.1mm thickness, but the new models are much thinner at 13.79mm. The new watches are all powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8912 movement used in OMEGA’s Ultra Deep watches which gives them 60 hours of power reserve.
Aside from the slimmer size, the new OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean watches have a new case structure which is more angular and sharp than before. Made from stainless steel and titanium with ceramic on the ring of the uni-directional bezel, each dial of the new watches come in matte black and have new numerals.
The Arabic numerals on the OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean are now open-worked and have a more angular, square shape. The watches also feature the arrowhead hands that OMEGA is best known for.
The new OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean comes in a choice of blue, black or orange. The different colours predominantly feature on the bezel, with the orange edition also having orange numerals. Each bezel also has a white enamel diving scale, and the watches are finished with a choice of a stainless steel bracelet or black rubber strap – an orange rubber strap is available for the orange version.
While I love the new colours of the OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean – especially the orange – I have to say I like the caseback the most. I’m usually a sucker for an open caseback so you can see the intricacy of the movement, but in tribute to the original Seamaster Planet Ocean, the new models have kept the iconic engraved seahorse emblem.
