Orange to offer Apple iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in the UK this year
Apple and Orange could offer up some fruity tariffs
By name alone it was marriage made in heaven and now Apple and Orange have finally teamed up, officially offering the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in the UK.
Where does this leave O2? Presumably with a big hole in its profits projections, although it has been long predicted that its exclusivity deal would be coming to an end. It doesn't look like the end of O2 and Apple though, the word 'exclusive' is noticably absent from the official Orange statement. Which could be good news for us, the consumer.

Yes, while O2 has been able to charge a premium price for access to Britain's coolest brand, that high tariff is unlikely to survive when Orange starts the hard sell. And let's be honest, if Orange wants to make serious inroads into the iPhone market in the UK (and we're sure the company will), it will need to undercut O2 significantly, although handsets prices are unlikely to vary between companies.
The merger between T-Mobile and Orange in the UK might well have tipped the balance in Orange's favour, something Orange CEO Tom Alexander alluded to in a recent interview: 'We’ve (Orange) already got the biggest 3G network , now with T-Mobile we’ve got an even stronger 3G network,' he said. 'We’ve got a fantastic platform and are obviously the network of choice for all multimedia devices, including potentially, the iPhone in future.'
Sadly, Orange has stopped short of answering those two key questions - when and how much. The official statement says that more information on pricing, tariffs and availability dates will be released 'in due course'. But if you want to be the first to know, there's already a pre-registration page, which you can access via the link below.
