Hands-on preview: Spotify Apple iPhone app

Is it too good to be true?

We were giddy with excitement on hearing the news that much loved Spotify music streaming service will be heading to the iPhone. Incredulously Apple may allow the touted iTunes killer on its beloved handset.  The guys over at Techradar hot footed it to the Spotify's UK office to nab the first hands-on and they loved it.

The app is due to be available before Christmas and the preview confirms that the service will only be available for those who sign-up to the premium subscription service. Techradar note "It'll be interesting to see if Spotify does offer some kind of access for those without Premium accounts. Certainly, the app enabled us to log in with a free account and was fine with it, though this is one of the things that will almost certainly change by the time the app hits the App Store."

Working simultaneously with your PC, playlists synch from one to the other although you will need to be in a Wi Fi zone to download the tracks. Search seems near identical to the PC software and Techradar were mightily impressed with the speed on both 3G and Wi Fi although it was a tad sluggish on Edge.

The final word?  "The Spotify iPhone app certainly has the potential to be a game changer, even if our gut feeling is that the usual Apple restriction - no multitasking - does restrict it so much that it's simply not convenient for many situations when you want to listen to music while doing something else with your iPhone."
