Video game delays are inevitable. While we all want to play the latest and greatest next-gen games across PlayStation 5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC as soon as possible, the costs and development process are now more complicated and bigger than ever.

Most people are now familiar with the famous Miyamoto quote about a delayed game being eventually good and a rushed game being forever bad, so while it's naturally disappointing to find out that you'll have to wait a little bit longer to play these games, it's normally a positive thing in the long run. You then have the global COVID-19 pandemic to take into consideration too, which has not helped the process.

That said, there are still some fantastic games coming this year and beyond. To help you prepare your calendar in anticipation, here's every major video game delayed in 2022 and their new release dates.

Forspoken

Original release: May 25th, 2022
New date: January 24th, 2023

Forspoken was delayed by five months in March this year, pushing the new action RPG from Square Enix to an October 11th, 2022 release date. It was then delayed for a second time on July 6th, 2022 to a new date of January 24th, 2023.

"As a result of ongoing discussions with key partners, we have made the strategic decision to move the launch date of Forspoken to January 24, 2023," wrote Square (via Twitter). "All game elements are now complete, and development is in its final polishing phase".

Forspoken is set to launch across PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Windows.

Original release: April 8th, 2022
New date: TBC

Nintendo decided to delay the launch of Advance Wars 1 + 2 Reboot Camp as a result of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. The turn-based strategy game is a remake of the original Advance Wars from 2001 and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising from 2003. It currently doesn't have a release date.

"In light of recent world events, we have made the decision to delay Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, which was originally scheduled to release on Nintendo Switch on April 8th. Please stay tuned for updates on a new release date," said Nintendo (via Twitter).

Advance Wars 1 + 2 Reboot Camp is set to launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Original release: 2022
New date: Spring 2023

Batman: Arkham spinoff Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was delayed in March with developer Rocksteady confirming the decision to push the release back until Spring 2023.

"We've made the difficult decision to delay Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League to Spring 2023," said Rocksteady creative director Sefton Hill (via Twitter). "I know a delay is frustrating but that time is going into making the best game we can. I look forward to bringing the chaos to Metropolis together. Thanks for your patience."

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is set to launch across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S and Microsoft Windows.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2

Original release: 2022
New date: Spring 2023

Following heavy speculation, Nintendo finally confirmed that Breath of the Wild 2 would now not release until Spring 2023 with more time needed to make the game "something special".

"We previously announced that we were aiming for a 2022 release for this game. However, we have decided to extend our development time a bit and change the release to Spring 2023," said Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma (in a video announcing the delay). Adding that: "In order to make the game's experience something special, the entire development team is continuing to work diligently on this game, so please wait a while longer."

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is set to launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch. Read T3's Breath of the Wild 2 hub for more information.

Redfall and Starfield

Original release: 2022 / November 11th, 2022

New date: H1 2023

Now, this was certainly unexpected. Starfield and Redfall from Bethesda Studios and Arkane Studios, respectively, were both set to be two of the biggest Xbox exclusives of 2022 but were suddenly delayed to the first half of 2023 on May 12th, 2022. Starfield, specifically, was the most shocking with Bethesda confidently sticking a date of November 11th, 2022 on the ambitious space action RPG as early as E3 2021.

"The teams at Arkane Austin (Redfall) and Bethesda Game Studios (Starfield) have incredible ambitions for their games, and we want to ensure that you receive the best, most polished versions of them," said Bethesda (via Twitter).

"We want to thank everyone for their excitement for Redfall and Starfield. That energy is a huge part of what inspires all of us every day and drives our own excitement for what we are creating. We can't wait to share our first deep dive into the gameplay for both Redfall and Starfield soon".

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Original release: 2022

New date: 2023 / 2024

Ubisoft quietly delayed the release of its upcoming open-world action-adventure video game set in the world of Avatar – Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora — in July 2022. The game is being made by Massive Entertainment, the studio known for Tom Clancy's The Division.

The delay was made public during Ubisoft's Q1 report for its 2022 financial year, where it confirmed that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be released until some time in its 2023 / 2024 financial period. This means the game could release anytime up until March 31st, 2024.

Marvel's Midnight Suns

Original release: October 7th, 2022

New date: December 2nd, 2022

So close, yet so far. Only two months out from launch, Take-Two Interactive announced that Marvel Midnight Suns has been delayed with no new date given outside of the fiscal year 2023. This means that the tactical RPG won't be playable until March 31st, 2023 at the earliest.

"We have made the decision to move back the launch timing of Marvel’s Midnight Suns to ensure the teams at Firaxis Games and 2K deliver the best possible experience for our fans. The title will launch later this fiscal year on Windows PC, Xbox Series X / S, and PlayStation 5. The Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch versions will follow at a later date," said Take-Two.

Hogwarts Legacy

Original release: 2022

New date: February 10th, 2023

As predicted, Hogwarts Legacy has been pushed out of its 2022 release date with the action RPG set in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter now launching on February 10th, 2023. With Warner Bros. set to launch Gotham Knights in a packed October, the likelihood of the company releasing another high-profile release in close proximity always seemed slim. Also, smart to get away from the bad reception to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald.

The announcement reads: "Hogwarts Legacy will launch on February 10, 2023 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The Nintendo Switch launch date will be revealed soon. The team is excited for you to play, but we need a little more time to deliver the best possible game experience."

Skull and Bones

Original release: November 8th, 2022

New date: March 9th, 2023

Taking to the high seas is going to have to wait a little bit longer after the repeatedly delayed Skull and Bones suffered what we're hoping is the final pushback.

Ubisoft confirmed the delay by stating: "While the game development is finished at this stage, the extra time will be used to further polish and balance the experience using players' feedback from our Technical tests and Insider Program which happened over the past two weeks. This is the right decision both for our players and for the long-term success of the game as 9th March, 2023 provides for a suitable release window for this very unique new brand."

We'll be updating this piece (hopefully, not that regularly) whenever a major video game is delayed, so check back to keep on top of all the latest release dates.
