Hoka’s lightest Tecton yet comes armed with a new foam and carbon plate system designed to turn tough trails into fast ones
The Tecton X 4 gets PROFLY X cushioning
Hoka has unveiled the Tecton X 4, a lighter, more aggressively tuned successor to the Tecton X 3, the very same trail-running shoe that previously picked up a T3 Award.
The brand says it has refined the shoe through extensive testing, with changes spanning the midsole, carbon-plate construction, upper and lacing system.
The Tecton X 4 changes the dual-layer PEBA midsole to PROFLY X, Hoka’s new performance platform combining high-energy foams, carbon plates and race-focused geometry.
Luckily for those of us who were fans of the previous version, the PROFLY X still has two layers of PEBA foam, which the brand describes as its lightest and most resilient cushioning material.
Parallel carbon-fibre plates remain central to the formula, but their structure has been adjusted to improve snap and efficiency.
They work alongside Hoka’s speed-focused MetaRocker geometry, intended to move you more quickly from a stable landing into a responsive toe-off.
More than a midsole makeover
Underfoot, the Tecton X 4 uses a Vibram Megagrip Litebase outsole with 4mm Traction Lugs.
Vibram claims its Litebase construction can reduce outsole thickness by around 40 to 50 per cent and tread weight by roughly 25 to 30 per cent while maintaining performance.
The lug design is intended to increase rubber contact with uneven ground for added grip and precision.
Hoka has fitted a more breathable Matryx Micro woven upper, a lightweight material with hydrophobic properties for wet conditions.
The shoes retain their signature extended gaiter-style knit collar to help keep trail debris out.
However, the updated lacing structure adds a marathon-lacing option and promises improved lockdown.
The men’s shoe weighs a claimed 275g in a size 10, with a 40mm heel and 35mm forefoot stack.
The women’s version weighs 234g in a size 8 and measures 39mm/34mm. Both have a 5mm drop.
The Tecton X 4 will launch on 20 August 2026 in Frost/Neon Tangerine for men and women, priced at £220 / €250 (~$288 / AU$411) at HOKA.
