Samsung Gear 2 will come with Tizen – not Android claims report

Galaxy S5-maker may opt to use Tizen in its next gen smartwatch

The Galaxy Gear 2 will use Tizen, not Android, according to reports.

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Gear 2’s launch date at Mobile World Congress next week, alongside the Galaxy S5.

However, while the Galaxy S5 is almost a dead cert to be powered by Android, if information coming out the US is correct, that isn’t the case for the follow up to the original Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

According to ‘people familiar with the matter’, the second generation Galaxy Gear smartwatch will be powered by Tizen.

There is also a strong chance that Samsung may unveil a version of the Samsung Galaxy S5 powered by Tizen at the event, according to the sources.

Tizen is the mobile operating system Samsung and Intel have been developing as an open source rival to Android.

Smart money

All eyes will be on Samsung’s Mobile World Congress keynote on Monday when it is expected to unveil the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Previous reports have suggested that it will unveil the Galaxy Gear 2 alongside the smartphone.

There has also been talk that the smartwatch would be significantly cheaper than the original Galaxy Gear – largely out of fear about the danger Apple’s iWatch or iBand poses to their ability to not be swept away.

Sony’s chief executive noted the danger posed by Apple’s iWatch when he said Sony and its rivals have only once chance to win people’s wrists.

Samsung is also said to be developing fitness bands – like the Fitbit Flex and Nike+ Fuelband – that are focused purely on health.

When questioned about the report, Samsung said that it doesn’t comment on rumours and speculation.
