Google Maps just got way more immersive, update rolling out now

Google has pushed the button on the huge Immersive Navigation update that's now rolling out to Google Maps users. The new navigation visuals have been reported by multiple users, and importantly it's available to those who aren't using the beta version.

That means that this is a real update, although it's not currently universal and it's likely to move from region to region. Google said that Immersive Navigation was its "biggest navigation update in over a decade" when the feature was first shown off in March 2026.

The update isn't limited to Android users, with some reporting that they have it on iPhone and it should also benefit those using Android Auto, as well as Apple CarPlay.

Immersive Navigation uses Gemini to bring maps to life and give a more realistic view of what the world looks like. It uses a 3D view with better spatial understanding, with Maps adding useful details for navigation when they are relevant.

This is thanks to Gemini being able to interpret Steet View and aerial photos to make your navigation richer and that should lead to clearer directions, with a map that's instantly recognisable compared to the world around you.

Although Immersive Navigation was said to arrive immediately when it was announced in March, we're only at the stage where people are seeing it. Additional features announced, such as Ask Maps, have been accessible for a while, while everything hinges on having Gemini in Google Maps.

That's not something that everyone has yet. In the availability information from Google's original announcement it said that Immersive Navigation was coming to the US before expanding - although from experience we know that other regions might have to wait for some time.

Mixed into this update, it's also reported that people are seeing the new speedometer in Android Auto. This was first spotted last week, bringing an additional detail to help keep your driving on the right side of the law.
