A closer look at the 55-inch OLED TV from LG

Why we should all be getting excited about OLED

OLED is a next-gen TV technology, and it's already being used in current TVs like the LG 55EC930V.

The TV industry is packed with jargon terms, but don't mistake OLED for something dreamt up by a marketing department.

LG is the only company making OLED TVs right now, and its 55EC930V offers contrast so high and blacks so deep it'll make your local cinema look like a washed out mess.

Even in a pitch black room, those black spacey scenes in Gravity will stay pure unadulterated black. To be clear: no plasma or LCD TV, ever, has managed this.

There's no going back to LCD once you've tasted OLED fruits.

It's finally affordable enough for mere mortals too, with the LG 55EC930V costing around the same price as a top-end LCD TV.

An obvious question: if OLED is so good why is LG the only company making them?

It's not easy at all, that's why, but LG has developed its own Four Color pixel tech to make it possible. This involves using colour filters over white OLED pixels to avoid the longevity issues of earlier types of larger OLED display.

Feeling flush? LG also makes even larger, higher-end models than the 55EC930V too.

The 65-inch 65EC9700 and 77-inch 77EG9700 offer the same kind of super-rich OLED images, but with the 4K resolution everyone's getting so excited about these days.

Owning an OLED is a lesson in the idea that there's a lot more to image quality than just the number of pixels on show, but LG's higher-end models get you the lot.

Add in the snazzy webOS 2.0 smart TV interface, an eye-catching lightly curved screen and a perfect viewing angle, and LG's OLEDs start to sound like pretty much the ultimate TVs. Guess what: they are.
