GTA VI gameplay will debut exclusively on Netflix, then hit YouTube six hours later
Just when you thought Rockstar couldn't make any more money
We all know that Grand Theft Auto VI is going to make absolutely filthy money when it comes out later this year – it'll probably make Spider-Man: Brand New Day's box office records look like child's play. Still, I didn't have a slot on my bingo card for Rockstar successfully monetising the title's gameplay reveal.
That seems to be what it's managed, though, because Netflix just confirmed that an "extended look" at the game will drop on its streaming platform on 27 August, with the strong implication of exclusivity.
Despite that implication, though, the same footage will be up on YouTube six hours after it hits Netflix, as confirmed by Rockstar's own YouTube channel. Still, you'd have to assume that Rockstar is making money from the partnership with Netflix, which is quite something to consider.
Right now you can head to Netflix's site to see the placeholder page where the footage will debut, which confirms that it's basically being treated like a standalone movie in terms of Netflix's catalogue. It even has a list of tags about what the "series" is like: "Slick, Rousing, Adventure, High-Octane, Imaginative, Cars, Action Thriller, Movie".
Some of those are more obviously applicable than others, dare I say. Still, this is obviously a big deal, and it's a significant enough marketing beat to get its own teaser trailer.
This teaser also confirms that the footage will go live on Netflix at 3:00 PM ET, meaning 8:00 PM BST here in the UK – so it's very much in a headline slot for your evening's entertainment here in Europe.
The YouTube version of the extended look will be out six hours later, at 9:00 PM ET or 2:00 AM BST, which is much less sociable. If you're a Netflix subscriber, that's not your problem, of course, but it might mean I end up watching it the next morning, on 28 August.
This also means that we're almost certainly not getting any other new looks at the game before the end of August, so that should put a whole load of rumour-mongering to bed. Strap in for a long month before the footage drops, though, and a whole heaping of hype in the meantime.
