iOS 4.3 landing mid-December

New iOS update primed ahead of 'The Daily' launch

Software bump required to get new Apple/News Corp paper off the ground.

Apple is reportedly preparing iOS 4.3 for release in mid-December to coincide with the launch of The Daily, its new joint newspaper venture with Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. That’s according to MacStories, which says Cupertino could unleash the update on 13 December.

Sources have told the Apple-centric site that the move to iOS 4.3 is down to getting a new recurring subscriptions package off the ground, a key part of The Daily’s launch. The offering will allow papers to land directly onto the iPad, rather than punters shopping for single issues on a virtual newsstand.

Because of delays to iOS 4.2, however, there remains some doubt about when Apple will make the jump to iOS 4.3. Daring Fireball’s John Gruber says Steve Jobs and co are plotting an event on 9 December, a Thursday, with a release following the week after.

Either way, Apple and the iPad look set to dominate tech headlines in the run up to Christmas. Will you subscribe to The Daily? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
