Can you hear that trilling sound in the distance? That, dear reader, is the sound of thousands of ringing cash registers at gaming retail outlets as Grand Theft Auto 5 makes record-breaking history.
GTA 5 has broken sales records, becoming the fastest-selling game in UK history, generating over £65 million in revenue and selling 1.57 million units in the first 24-hours of its release. These were the figures according to GFK Chart-Track.
The game's distributor, Take Two, has yet to release any official data on the game's global sales and earnings. However, Take Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick has praised developer Rockstar's success.
"All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V" Zelnick said in a statement. "Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry's new standard for creativity, innovation, and excellence,"
This shatters the record previously held by Call Of Duty: Black Ops, which sold 1.41 million copies and made around £58 million in its first day of release back in 2010.
Grand Theft Auto 5 went on sale this week on September 17th for Xbox 360 and PS3, although there were reports that some retailers broke the official street date by shipping copies of the game early. T3 played it for review and we rather liked it.
