Once winter sales stretch to the depths of mid-Jan, it's usually a case of picking from the leftovers. Once the good discounts have been added, it's rare to find something decent and in your size.
Thankfully, that's not the case with outerwear brand Columbia. After scouring its annual winter sale pages online, I've found some genuinely decent reductions across its most wearable stuff, and it’s not just one hero product doing all the work.
I’ve pulled out three jacket deals that stand out for savings and practicality, whether you want a lightweight puffer you can wear daily, something warmer for proper cold snaps, or a longer cut that’s easier to live in when the temperature drops.
This is Columbia’s classic puffer - light enough that you don’t feel restricted, but warm enough for most winter days if you’re moving around. The main feature is the Omni-Heat thermal reflective lining (those little heat-bouncing dots), which makes it feel warmer than you’d expect without adding bulk. If you want one jacket that works for dog walks, commuting, weekends away and the odd chilly trail, this is the safe pick.
The first of the bunch is the Columbia Powder Lite II Puffer Jacket, which is basically the brand’s evergreen “do-it-all” puffer. It’s warm without being bulky, easy to layer under, and doesn’t restrict movement, which is why it’s become such a default recommendation for people who want a practical winter jacket that still looks clean.
The main reason it punches above its weight is Omni-Heat - Columbia’s thermal reflective lining that bounces body heat back at you - so you get that cosy feel without needing loads of fill.
This one is the more “serious” insulated option of the three, using down fill for warmth while still keeping that Columbia practicality. It also leans on Omni-Heat to reflect heat back at you, plus Omni-Shield for water and stain resistance, so it’s built for grim winter days when the weather can’t decide what it’s doing. It’s a great deal if you want maximum warmth for the money, but without stepping up to big bulky parka territory.
If you like the idea of that jacket but want something with a bit more coverage, the Women’s Powder Lite II Mid Jacket is the obvious upgrade. Same general recipe - lightweight insulation, water-repellent outer, Omni-Heat inside - but with a longer cut that keeps more of your body warm, which honestly matters more than you think once the temperature properly drops. It’s especially good if you’re travelling, spending time outdoors at a slower pace, or you’re someone who always ends up with a cold lower back in shorter jackets.
Then there’s the more premium-feeling option - the Columbia Voodoo Falls 590 Turbodown II Jacket. However, the cheapest I could find this was on Amazon. This is the one to look at if you want something warmer and more “technical” without going full expedition parka. It uses down insulation for that proper toasty warmth, while still keeping Columbia’s practical extras - the trusty old Omni-Heat for heat retention and Omni-Shield to help repel light rain, snow and general winter grime.
The mid-length version of the Powder Lite II is basically the same no-fuss formula, but with extra coverage that makes a noticeable difference in proper cold snaps - especially if you’re standing around, travelling, or doing low-intensity winter walking. You still get the Omni-Heat lining and water-repellent finish, but in a more protective cut that feels a bit more coat-like than jacket-like. It’s a really solid buy if you want warmth without going full “heavy winter coat”.
If you’re only grabbing one but not sure which, it really comes down to how you’ll use it.
For maximum versatility, I'd go for the standard Powder Lite II. If you want more coverage and a bit more coat-like warmth, go Mid. And if you want the warmest, most premium feeling option of the three while the deal’s live, the Voodoo Falls is the one to watch - especially while stock in your size is still around.
If you’re shopping the wider sale, it’s worth remembering Columbia’s pushing up to 50% off across jackets, fleeces and footwear right now - but the deals above are the ones that feel like proper price drops, not just discounts for the sake of it.
