Apple has gleefully announced that the iPad has hit the three million mark. The tablet, which only landed on US shelves in April and been up for grabs here in Blighty for six weeks, is now storming ahead of even the original iPhone’s success.
The first Apple mobile took 73 days to sell a million. It’s taken the iPad 80 days to reach three times that figure. And it doesn’t look like demand for a gadget that some said would struggle to find a niche is slowing either.
“People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives,” said Steve Jobs. “We’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month.”
It’s only four weeks since Apple said it had sold two million iPads. At this rate, it’s a dead cert that no other tablet will be able to scale the same heights, especially with MeeGo and Chrome OS rivals still MIA.
