3.7m Android smartphones activated Christmas weekend

Google's Andy Rubin hits Twitter to share success

It would appear as though Santa decided that Google has in fact been a good child all year round as it decided to treat the company to 3.7m activations

Andy Rubin the Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google today announced that Android saw 3.7 million activations on the 24th and the 25th making it a truly bumper Christmas for Google and its smartphone OS.

While before the figures had suggested that Google was seeing around 700,000 handsets activated every day it would appear (unsurprisingly) that Christmas has had a bit of an impact on those stats with the weekend pushing those figures through the roof.

It's unlikely that Google will be able to maintain the 1.85 million daily average past the Christmas period however with high-end quad-core handsets such as the HTC Edge and the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc HD it's hugely unlikely that Google will see stats decrease from their 700,000 recorded early this month.

Following the release of its latest operating system Ice Cream Sandwich and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus other handset manufacturers have begun to switch their current handsets over to Android 4.0 with updates set to land on the Samsung Galaxy S2, Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and HTC Sensation.
