Why you can trust T3
If you're looking for one of the best mattress protectors but don't want to sleep in synthetics, the Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector could be your dream product.
This is a simple item. This mattress protector from this UK sleep accessory brand (which won a T3 Award for its Hungarian Goose Down Duvet) is designed to do what it says with minimal fuss. After all, a mattress is a big investment, so it needs protecting, but with the Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector, you don't get lots of padding and nor will you have to put up with synthetic fabrics. It's designed to go between a mattress and a fitted sheet.
Sure, it doesn't have a waterproof dimension, which makes it less protective of a mattress than some mattress protectors. Instead, it's about creating a breathable, natural environment with moisture-wicking fabrics that are useful for those hot summer nights. It's even certified to the OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which means it's guaranteed free from harmful substances.
As usual with bedding, the Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector comes in different sizes and styles to fit all types of beds. If you've invested in one of the best mattresses, it's something to consider. Read on for my full Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector review.
SCOOMS 100% PURE COTTON MATTRESS PROTECTOR REVIEW: price and availability
The Scooms 100% Pure Cotton Mattress Protector is available to buy at Scooms with prices starting at £55. It's available in single, double, king and super king sizes, and for this review, I tried the mattress protector in the king size.
SCOOMS 100% PURE COTTON MATTRESS PROTECTOR REVIEW: DESIGN
A major selling point for the Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector is its use of all-natural fabrics, so it's good to see it arrive in minimal packaging that's free from plastic and completely recyclable. The product itself is wrapped in a drawstring cotton bag that's useful for storing both it and any other bedding that needs neatly stowing away, such as a duvet or blanket.
The Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector is not a mattress topper. It's not particularly padded, so don't expect it to breathe new life into an old mattress. Instead, it exists to offer simple, breathable protection, which it does via its quilted design with a 200-thread cotton count and 200gm fill. It uses a percale cotton weave, creating a smooth sheet that is soft and cool to the touch.
Although it's a fitted mattress protector, unlike some of its rivals, it doesn't fall into the trap of promising an all-cotton quilted design and then surrounding it with a synthetic skirt. Here, not only is the elasticated skirt also cotton, but at 40 cm, it's generously long, too, making it really easy to fit however deep your mattress is. It's available in four sizes – single, double, king and super-king.
A key feature is that it meets the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 textile safety standard. That means it's harmless to human health, with every thread tested against over 1,000 harmful substances.
SCOOMS 100% PURE COTTON MATTRESS PROTECTOR REVIEW: COMFORT and performance
The best aspect of the Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector is that you'll barely know it's there. The diamond quilting pattern across the top of the products is significant, and it's evenly distributed, yet it's subtle enough not to feel the joins from beneath a sheet. It's also completely silent; there are no ruffling sounds as the sheet rubs against the mattress protector.
Used on a deep mattress, the Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector adds an extra layer of comfort and in my test worked well in a variety of temperatures, keeping us warm on crisp spring nights and comfortably cool on stuffy, humid evenings. It's also slightly larger than other mattress protectors we've tried, so it goes right up to the edges of a mattress, unlike some that only cover the middle 90%.
I also noticed that during the couple of months I tested it, it always gripped the mattress, not moving at all during the night, even when I was tossing and turning. It's also easy to clean. It can be machine washed at 30-40 degrees (using non-bio detergent, but avoid fabric softener) and tumble dried at lower heat.
One thing to bear in mind is that the Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector isn't waterproof. It has no polypropylene layer, as some mattress protectors do. This means it's absorbent, so it doesn't protect much against spills. Of course, it adds a simple barrier that will lessen the chance of spillages physically getting into a mattress, but it is not waterproof.
SCOOMS 100% PURE COTTON MATTRESS PROTECTOR REVIEW: VERDICT
The Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector is a compelling choice for anyone after a high-quality, all-natural bedding accessory. It's perhaps best suited to those using a deep mattress since its long, all-cotton skirt makes it easy to fit, though that applies to all mattress sizes.
Its natural cotton construction makes it super-soft and silent, and it stays put when in place. Its diamond quilt construction is evenly spaced and on the slim side, so rather than extra warmth, this mattress protector is more about offering a breathable night seep. That makes is particularly good on warm nights. However, it's not waterproof in any way, so don't expect it to offer more than a basic protection against spillages.
