T3 Verdict

With 15 layers of natural fillings and a generous 19,575 springs in its double size, Button & Sprung’s Teesdale has an eye-catching spec. At 34cm, it's thick and quite bulky which is something to bear in mind if you have a small space and don’t want the mattress overpowering your room. It’s filled with natural, non toxic materials such as moisture-absorbing silk and temperature-regulating Herdwick wool so it’s good for those with allergies. Its excellent motion isolation means you won’t get disturbed by your partner moving in the night either. It’s hard to fault such a beautifully crafted mattress that both looks and feels luxurious and inviting.

The start of the year is a great time to upgrade your bedroom with one of the best mattresses and for the ultimate in pocket-spring comfort, I think the Button & Sprung’s Teesdale Mattress is impressive. The 15-layer design comes in two tensions – medium and medium-firm – and is filled with natural, breathable and resilient materials such as silk, mohair, Egyptian cotton and hemp.

It has a 10-year guarantee, but a pocket-sprung mattress like this that's mindfully handcrafted in the UK is built to last. It’s designed to be rotated and flipped over with the seasons, and is structured in such a way that you can benefit from the materials for the warmer (wool rich) side in the winter, and cooler (cotton rich) side in the summer.

I tested this mattress for over three months to see how it compares to other pocket sprung, hybrid and memory foam mattresses I’ve tried from the likes of Simba, Silentnight and Nectar. I’ve rated Button & Sprung’s Teesdale on design and performance, how well it limits motion from side to side, edge support, breathability and how easy it is to set up, dress, clean and rotate.

Button & Sprung Teesdale Pocket Sprung Mattress review: price and availability

Button & Sprung sells high-quality mattresses built to stand the test of time. You can buy its bed frames and pocket-sprung mattresses online, but there’s also a London showroom you can visit to try the beds for yourself before you buy. Each mattress is handmade in the UK and are 100% natural and free from chemicals, glues and fire retardants for peace of mind.

Pocket sprung mattresses such as the Teesdale are made from high-quality materials, which is why prices are premium but fair. At the time of writing, you can expect to pay £2,900 for a double Teesdale mattress, which comes with a 100-night trial and a 10-year guarantee.

I tried a super king size version of the Teesdale mattress that fits my Button & Sprung bed frame beautifully, but it can be placed on any wooden slatted, divan and ottoman storage bed frame. It also comes in single, small double, double, king size, emperor, super king zip and link, emperor zip and link and EU king sizes to suit your bed frame.

Button & Sprung Teesdale Pocket Sprung Mattress review: Set up

Unlike many hybrid and memory foam mattresses you can now buy online, the Teesdale comes fully formed as opposed to rolled up. Upon ordering, Button & Sprung contacted me to choose a suitable delivery date and make sure access to my bedroom was convenient. On arrival the couriers carried the mattress up to the bedroom – much to my relief due to the sheer weight and thickness of the mattress.

Once its recyclable protective plastic packaging was taken off, I allowed the mattress to settle in place on my Button & Sprung Camelia bedframe for at least four hours before sleeping on it. I was pleased to find that there was hardly any off-gassing – that new factory smell you can sometimes get with a new mattress that takes ages to clear.

During the three months I’ve tested the mattress I’ve alternated between dressing it with Nectar’s 100% cotton sateen bed linen, the Luff Sleep’s SilverLining Organic Bamboo Duvet Set and a Soft as Down Soak & Sleep pillow which add to the comfort set-up.

Button & Sprung Teesdale Pocket Sprung Mattress review: Design

What first attracted me to this mattress, and indeed the whole of the Button & Sprung portfolio, is that the company uses 100% natural fillings in its designs. With a child that suffers from asthma, choosing a mattress with natural, absorbent and breathable materials was a must for me.

Inside the 34 cm thick mattress are 15 layers including silk, mohair, Egyptian cotton, Herdwick wool, hemp, flax and cotton – each one with its benefits be it breathability, supportiveness, elasticity, antimicrobial properties. The spring count is generous too – with a breathtaking 19,575 springs in a double, and 26,100 springs in a super king size, for example.

At 34cm in depth, this is a thick and heavy mattress, which is above average compared to a standard pocket sprung that measures from 22-28cms. While this adds to its look of luxury, I think it’s important to bear this in mind when choosing a design as thick mattresses can sometimes look imposing in small rooms.

Button & Sprung Teesdale Pocket Sprung Mattress review: Performance

While testing this mattress, I used natural cotton bed linens and occasionally added a weighted blanket on the top of the shared duvet, which my partner and I agreed seemed to enhance the sense of calm and comfort we felt while sleeping.

Easy to rotate with the seasons

The mattress is designed with eight layers of natural fillings inside and seven layers of pocket springs. During the three months testing this bed, I rotated the mattress weekly, which you’re meant to do for the first 12 weeks before rotating every three months or a minimum of every six months.

It’s designed with a warmer, wool-rich side that includes temperature regulating Herdwick fleece and moisture-absorbing silk, that is ideal in the cooler months when you need that extra bit of warmth. Come the summer, it can be flipped over to the cooler side that contains breathable cotton. This creates a mattress that not only provides great support, but kept me and my partner feeling comfortable as we slept. It has been very warm and inviting during the winter and it’s good to know that come the summer, we don’t have to worry about overheating.

Medium firm pocket-sprung comfort to suit both sides

I am a side and back sleeper who loves a softer mattress and tested this mattress alongside my partner who is a side and front sleeper and prefers a firm tension. The mattress comes in two tensions – both medium and a firmer medium-firm – and we chose the medium-firm option, which seems to provide just the right amount of support and cosiness.

Excellent at making you feel peacefully alone

What I love most about this mattress is how well it has done to make both myself and my partner switch off and sleep deeply. This may be helped by its excellent motion isolation technology and edge support, which means I don’t get disturbed when my partner moves in his sleep next to me. You could bounce a ball one side and you’d be hard pressed to feel it move on the other. While it’s quite a tall mattress, getting in and out of the bed is easy too as the sides hold together well when you sit on them.

Button & Sprung Teesdale Pocket Sprung Mattress review: Verdict

If you’re looking for a high-quality pocket sprung that will stand you in good stead from season to season, the Teesdale mattress is an excellent buy. Yes, you’ll have to pay a premium price for the design, but you also won’t need to worry about replacing it for at least 10 years.

Overall, I’ve found it very supportive, comforting and welcoming. I wake up feeling like I’ve had a good sleep and, most nights when the kids haven’t woken me in the middle of the night, my Oura Ring seems to agree.

Button & Sprung Teesdale Pocket Sprung Mattress review: Alternatives to consider

If you’re keen to explore an alternative option, the Simba Hybrid Pro has a plush 28cm depth and was given a five-star rating in our review. This medium-firm mattress teams supportive springs and cushioning memory foam in one impressively supportive design.
