T3 Verdict

The Tefal AeroSteam is one of the most effective clothes steamers I’ve tested, thanks to its clever combination of steam and suction. It delivers iron-like results, heats up quickly, and works just as well on hanging garments as it does on fabrics laid flat. Whilst it’s louder than most steamers and the water tank could be bigger, these aren’t dealbreakers – just things worth being aware of. If you want powerful, efficient crease removal and don’t mind a bit of noise, the AeroSteam is completely worth it.

The Tefal AeroSteam isn’t exactly new to the steaming world, and there’s probably a very good chance you’ve seen it before. That said, it is a pretty unique addition, thanks to its clever steam and suction technology – something we hadn’t really seen until recently. Now that other brands are starting to follow suit, I thought it was time to finally give it a proper go and see what all the fuss is about.

Below are my thoughts on the Tefal AeroSteam, and whether it deserves a spot in our best iron and steamer buying guide. Here’s a clue – I think it does.

Tefal AeroSteam review: price and availability

The Tefal AeroSteam has an RRP of £139.99, and is available to buy on Tefal’s own website and at several major retailers, including Amazon and Currys.

There are two colourways to choose from, including the black and forest green version, which is the model I’ve been testing. Tefal also offers a few bundle options that include a fabric shaver for not much extra.

Tefal AeroSteam review: design and features

The Tefal AeroSteam is a smart hybrid between a handheld steamer and a traditional iron. It’s designed to smooth out wrinkles without needing an ironing board or hanger, promising iron-like results in a single pass thanks to Tefal’s patented OptiFlow technology – which I’ll get into shortly.

Weighing in at around 1.55kg, it’s not the lightest steamer out there, but you’re getting significantly more power in return. It also comes with a 100ml water tank that easily detaches from the main body and slots back in when refilling.

There are two modes to choose from, making it suitable for both delicate fabrics and heavier materials. Once powered on, you can toggle between the modes using the switch on the front. To operate the steamer, you need to keep the start button pressed, as this activates both the steam and the suction.

Heat-up time is impressively quick at around 30 seconds, which is fast considering how powerful the AeroSteam is. There’s also an automatic shut-off if it’s left on, which is always reassuring.

Tefal AeroSteam review: performance

Testing the Tefal AeroSteam felt unlike anything I’ve tried before, and if you’re used to standard steamers, you’ll probably feel the same. The combination of steam and suction is probably one of the most effective approaches to steaming and ironing I’ve come across, and it meant I got off to a strong start.

As mentioned, OptiFlow technology works by combining steam with suction to gently pull fabric taut as you move, making crease removal faster and more effective. Tefal claims it’s up to 50% quicker than a typical garment steamer, and from my testing, I’d agree. The results are incredibly fast, and when you factor in the short heat-up time, this easily ranks among the best steamers you can buy.

I also loved that it works just as well on hanging garments as it does on items laid flat on a surface, like a traditional iron. I’d probably say using it on a surface was slightly more effective, as it helps maintain stronger suction, but both methods delivered excellent results.

Another big advantage for me was the long power cord, which made it easy to move around larger items without being stuck near a plug socket. It’s a small detail, but one not every steamer gets this right, and it makes a real difference in use.

I started by testing it on some cushion covers I’d just washed, including a delicate linen one, and I was really impressed with the results. From there, I moved on to clothing, which was just as quick and effective.

When it comes to the downsides, there are only a small amount of things to note. The first is that it’s loud, and definitely not ideal for late-night steaming sessions. It’s even noisier on the higher setting, and whilst I don't think this is a dealbreaker, there are definitely quieter steamers out there.

My other minor gripe is the water tank size. The 100ml capacity gives you around 15 minutes of steaming on the higher mode, or 25 minutes on the lower. For such a powerful steamer, I would have liked to see a slightly larger tank, as this capacity is closer to what you’d expect from a portable or travel steamer.

Tefal AeroSteam review: verdict

The Tefal AeroSteam is one of the most effective clothes steamers I’ve tested, thanks to its clever combination of steam and suction. It delivers fast, iron-like results, heats up quickly, and works just as well on hanging garments as it does on fabrics laid flat. Whilst it’s louder than most steamers and the water tank could be bigger, I don't these are a reason not to buy, just more something to be aware of. If you want efficient crease removal and don’t mind a bit of noise, the AeroSteam more than earns its place amongst the best steamers you can buy.

Tefal AeroSteam review: alternatives to consider

If you want something lighter and more travel-friendly, the Philips 5000 Series Handheld Steamer is a good alternative. It won’t quite match the AeroSteam’s results, but it’s easier to pack and comes in some fun colour options too.

Another close rival is the Russell Hobbs Steam Genie VacuSteam, which uses a similar steam and suction approach but comes in at a slightly lower price. It’s a good option if you like the idea of the AeroSteam but want to spend a little less.
