The Nokia Lumia 930 is an important phone, for both Nokia and Microsoft. It’s the highest profile, fanciest Windows phone we’ve seen in ages, and a phone that’s meant to lure us away from the iPhone 5S and top Androids like the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5.

Does it have a hope? We think so, especially as it costs about £100 less than some of the competition.

Nokia Lumia 930: Size and build

Nokia phones are usually very well-made, good-looking devices. It’s this company that really brought colour back to the world of often serious-looking top-end phones. The Lumia 930 is no different.

The back of the phone uses Nokia’s trademark brightly-coloured high-grade plastic, and you can get the phone in orange, green, white and black colours. Our orange version of the Lumia 930 is bright enough to sear retinas.

Its sides are quite different, though. They’re textured metal. The combo of smooth plastic, cool metal and a curvature to the top glass layer makes the Lumia 930 a great-feeling, great-looking mobile.

It is not obsessed with weight or thickness like some others, though. The Nokia Lumia 930 is 9.8mm thick and 167g, a fair bit chunkier than even much bigger phones like the LG G3.

  • The Nokia Lumia 930 is the brand’s most advanced smartphone yet, but can it compete with the Samsung Galaxy S5?

Does the Windows Phone 8.1-powered Nokia Lumia 930 look familiar? Well it should – this is actually the Nokia Lumia Icon, first unveiled for the US four months ago and now finally making its way to the UK and Europe.

In smartphone years that’s enough time for Samsung to launch four new tablets, so is the Lumia 930 still enough to take on the likes of the new Samsung Galaxy S5 and the new HTC One M8?

We went hands-on with the Nokia Lumia 930 to find out if it’s shaping up to be the flagship for Microsoft’s new Windows Phone update.

Nokia Lumia 930: Size and build

As with all of Nokia’s handsets the Lumia 930 isn’t trying to be the thinnest phone in the world, as such it measures in at 9.8mm. Thankfully its size is actually a positive, it feels sturdy and well-planted in the hand with the matte back plate giving extra grip.

The build-quality as ever is fantastic with the sleek aluminium body coming into its own giving the likes of the Sony Xperia Z2 a run for its money.

    Nokia Lumia 930: Features

The Lumia 930 is one of the first phones to launch in the UK running Windows Phone 8.1. This major update brings with it some impressive new features including customised wallpaper for your tiles as well as the new Action Centre – a drop down menu which lets you see notifications and change quick settings.

Sadly there’s no Siri-like voice assistant Cortana, at least not for the moment. Microsoft is remaining tight-lipped about when it's bringing it to the UK so for the moment you’re stuck with bing.

One of the biggest features of the Lumia 930 isn’t the software, it’s how Nokia is going to sell them.

With wireless charging built in, Nokia will be bundling a free wireless charger with every one, marking a first for any smartphone manufacturer.

    Nokia Lumia 930: Screen

The Lumia 930 has a 5-inch Full HD OLED display with a reduced bezel around the edges giving it even more prominence on the phone.

From the short amount of time spent with it our first impressions are positive with Nokia creating another beautiful display thanks to the curved Gorilla Glass 3 and the use of OLED.

    Nokia Lumia 930: Camera

The Lumia 930 comes with a 20MP Carl Zeiss lens while Creative Studio will come pre-installed letting you edit to your heart's content.

We only had a short time to try out the camera but the software seemed responsive and the images appeared to cope well with the dimly lit conference room we were in.

    Nokia Lumia 930: Performance

Power is certainly not lacking here as Nokia has included a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor along with 2GB RAM. A short flick around the menus confirms that this is no slouch of course we’ll need to spend some real time with the 930 to be sure.

    Nokia Lumia 930: Verdict

Our first impressions of the Lumia 930 are positive - it’s a stunningly well-built handset and the small bezel means the 5-inch display doesn’t feel over the top.

There’s no word on battery life and while Windows Phone 8.1 now feels like a true rival to Android it’ll be the day-to-day usage that will really show if this is Nokia’s best smartphone yet.

Nokia Lumia 930 release date: June 2014

    Nokia Lumia 930 price: TBC
