Matador GlobeRider35 Travel Backpack review: the travel upgrade I didn't know I needed
It came with me on a weekend of adventure

The Matador GlobeRider35 is slightly heavier than some backpacks, but its durable build, smart organisation and top-tier comfort make it worth it. With a 35-litre capacity that’s both roomy and compact, it’s a top choice for versatile, travel-ready use.

Why you can trust T3

It might be Back to Class season right now, but that doesn’t mean you have to buy a bag just for school. Whether your daily routine is studying, commuting or hopping between cities, you still need one of the best backpacks that can handle it all.
This week, we've already taken a look at the luxury Montblanc Extreme 3.0 and the compact Stubble & Co Hybrid Backpack 20L, but now it’s time for something completely different.
I recently got my hands on the Matador GlobeRider35 Travel Backpack, and there's no doubt it’s one of the best travel-friendly bags I’ve tested in a long while. Keep reading to find out my thoughts, and whether it could be your version of a back-to-school upgrade.
Matador GlobeRider35 Travel Backpack review: price and availability
The GlobeRider35 retails for £290/$290 and is available directly from Matador's online store in Black, White or Garnet – with free UK shipping.
If you need a bit more space, there’s also a 45L version at £349.95/$349.95.
Matador GlobeRider35 Travel Backpack review: design and features
As you’d probably guess, the GlobeRider35 has a 35-litre capacity, which keeps it within most airline carry-on limits. That instantly makes it super travel-friendly, especially if you’re taking multiple flights on one trip. Inside, it has a full internal frame, which means it holds its shape and feels stable.
Matador has also clearly made comfort a priority. You get a breathable padded back panel, cushioned straps, load lifters and a removable hip belt that actually makes a difference on long treks. The sternum strap is also adjustable, which is great for dialling in fit, and you can neatly tuck away the straps and hip belt.

In terms of access, there are a lot of options. There's a clamshell opening for full packing mode, or a quick top-loading zip when you just need to grab something in transit. I was also pleased to see that the zips themselves feel sturdy and reliable.
On the outside, there’s a front pocket for everyday essentials, a hidden back-panel pocket, and a dual-access padded laptop sleeve with a clever false bottom and magnetic closure. There's also a top-access pocket and a large external stash pocket for extra storage.
I’ll be honest – the first thing I noticed before even packing was the weight. At just over 1.5kg with the hip belt attached, it’s not the lightest bag around. If you’re mindful of what you pack it’s fine, but I wouldn’t complain if it were a touch lighter.
That said, the build quality is excellent, featuring recycled Bluesign-certified materials, weather-resistant zips, and an overall premium feel that gives me confidence this will last for years.
Matador GlobeRider35 Travel Backpack review: performance
I recently took the GlobeRider35 on a weekend away involving trains, one bus, and an overnight stay, and it quickly proved itself. Its capacity instantly meant it was spacious enough for a few days away, yet compact enough to stay comfortable and easy to carry. The clamshell design made packing and unpacking simple, and the quick top-zip access was a lifesaver when I needed to grab something quickly on the go.
It did take a day for the straps to break in, but once they did, the bag's comfort levels were excellent. The hip belt took pressure off my shoulders, and the load lifters kept everything balanced. The hidden smuggler’s pocket on the back gave me peace of mind for tickets and cash, and the multiple grab handles made it easy to throw into overhead bins or onto train racks.
As I said, it's not the lightest thing around, but the durability, thoughtful design and comfort more than make up for that. The GlobeRider35 feels like it’s genuinely built for real-world travel, and I can see myself relying on it for plenty more trips ahead.
Matador GlobeRider35 Travel Backpack review: verdict
The Matador GlobeRider35 Travel Backpack might be a touch heavier than some, but it more than justifies its weight with a durable build, clever organisation and outstanding comfort. Built for real-world travel, its 35-litre capacity strikes the perfect balance between roomy and compact. If you’re looking for a versatile, travel-ready backpack that blends structure, practicality and comfort, this is definitely one of the best options out there.
Matador GlobeRider35 Travel Backpack review: alternatives to consider
A top alternative to the GlobeRider35 is the Mous Optimal Travel Backpack. It shares many of the same features but is slightly more expensive, yet comparable in design and functionality.
Another option to consider is the YETI Ranchero 27L Backpack. With a slightly smaller capacity, it’s a rugged, overbuilt commuter pack that stands out for durability and thoughtful design.
