MINI Cooper Roadster launches with not-so-mini price tag

MINI Roadster launches as a roofless four-wheeler with a price tag that’s through the roof

BMW-owned MINI Cooper launches the new MINI Roadster, a compact four-wheeler with an £18,015 price tag and retractable roof

MINI Cooper has launched its sixth MINI model: a compact four-wheeler sporting an £18,015 price tag and the brand’s trademark cube-like chassis but missing one major detail – a roof.

The MINI Roadster is the BWM-owned brand’s first two-seater open-topped offering and comes loaded with a myriad of specs and features, including a roof that can be retracted – even when the car isn't stationary (up to 20mph) – DAB digital radios and, unlike its predecessors, a spacious boot.

It joins the Hatch, Convertible, Clubman, Countryman and Coupé in MINI’s modest but successful portfolio of compact motors.

“Britain is known for its cutting edge style and sophistication, and the new MINI Roadster is no exception. We’ve taken an iconic design and given it a striking and innovative new profile,” says Anders Warming, Head of Design at MINI.

“We’ve retained the classic MINI features, and reinterpreted them in a unique way, without compromising on the driving experience owners have come to know and love.”

Despite its dramatic redesign, the Roadster is still recognisable as a MINI - courtesy of its goggle-like front lights - and comes equipped with the regular MINI kit, including go-kart handling, large central circular speedometer and chrome toggle switches.

Traditional it may be, but old school it’s not.

It also comes loaded with MINI Connected, a new in-car entertainment system which gives passengers (as drivers cannot Tweet behind the wheel, of course) the ability to view both their Facebook and Twitter posts on the on-board monitor.

MINI Connected, which users can hook up to their smartphones via USB, also hosts web radio and a news feature that keeps its passengers up to date with the latest goings-on.
