Sony VAIO X Series review
Is it style over substance?
Sony’s VAIO X Series is one of the most staggeringly tiny laptops we’ve seen yet, proving smaller, thinner and lighter than, if you can believe it, the Apple MacBook Air. The use of an Intel Atom processor invites inevitable comparisons with the current crop of netbooks, but rest assured that this sub-800g machine is something else entirely.

And now for something completely different, on the X Series the motherboard has all the components soldiered to one side of it only, to make it even thinner. The components are also all crammed into the rear of the machine, with the front half taken up entirely by the battery.
The result is a laptop that measures just 16mm throughout, which is a lot thinner than any other machine currently available. There’s a couple of drop-down legs at the rear, for when you need to connect an Ethernet cable – the connection of which is thicker than the laptop itself. You’ll also need to use the legs if you plug in an optional extended battery, which makes the front of the machine slightly thicker.
The keyboard is just about large enough to use accurately, and also boasts decent spacing to make it easier to type at speed. The keys only move a fraction under pressure though, with no space for travel, and the short typing action won’t suit all users. The touchpad is tiny, although a responsive action means it offers precise control. The accompanying buttons are surprisingly big, but as with the keyboard they only offer slight movement.
An 11.1-inch screen is something we'd expect to see on a mid-range netbook, but this is better than just about any currently on the market, offering excellent colour reproduction, and it’s more than a match for ultraportable rivals such as the Air and Lenovo’s ThinkPad X301. It’s also pin-sharp, with a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, meaning you’ll be able to fit a couple of windows alongside each other onscreen.
As with its VAIO P Series, Sony has stuck to a low-budget Intel Atom processor – opting against the latest generation of CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) processors. That said, it’s clocked at 2GHz, and offers enough power for most office tasks. The 256GB solid state drive speeds things up a bit, although the 2GB of memory is average at best.
The chassis itself is made out of carbon fibre, helping to keep the weight down to an amazing 775g. Surprisingly, it’s not that great when it comes to rigidity, however, with the entire body flexing alarmingly under light pressure. That aside, the carbon finish is exquisite, especially the glossy lid, and it feels every bit a premium product.
Not so premium is that the amount of ports with just two USB ports on the left side, and VGA and Ethernet connections on the right. The front offers support for SD cards and Sony’s Memory stick formats. Connectivity is good, with 802.11n Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet. Range-topping models also get 3G/HSDPA, with the SIM card slotting in neatly behind the battery.
As soon as you set eyes on the X Series, it’s impossible not to be blown away by just how small it is. It’s a genuinely amazing piece of engineering, backed by a svelte design, and it’s the ultimate laptop for business users who value tiny dimensions and the lowest weight possible. That said, if you don’t mind carrying around a bit of extra weight, Apple’s MacBook Air and Sony’s VAIO Z-series are better all-round propositions.
