Nokia flat-out denies its working on an Android phone

Goodbye to Symbian? Not by a long shot

Nokia has moved swiftly to deny rumours that its about to announce its first Google Android-powered smartphone after reports emgerged that the handset would even be ready for an assualt on the Christmas market.

A report in the Guardian on Monday, had 'industry insiders' claiming Nokia was preparing to unleash a touchscreen Android smartphone at the Nokia World conference in September.

However despite its share of the smartphone market dropping from 47% to just 31 by the end of 2008, Nokia has poured scorn on the report saying: "There is no truth to this story whatsoever. It's a well known fact that Symbian is our platform of choice for smartphones." It doesn't get more categorical than that.

That still might not be enough to stop numerous blurry images of this Nokia Android phone arriving in the next two months. But in the meantime, if you have a phone to upgrade later in the year and fancy Android, you might want to sit tight and wait. Even if the Nokia Android doesn't exist, we're certain that were will be plenty of other tasty Androids to tempt you in as the festive season arrives.
