Exclusive Stephen Fry video interview: 'Smartphones are our window on the world'

T3's Gadget Personality of the Year tells all to our cameras.

Actor, comedian and tech blogger extraordinaire Stephen Fry has claimed that smartphones are now our 'window on the world' in a fascinating, multi-part, exclusive video interview with T3.

Passionate gadgeteer Fry, who was awarded the title of Gadget Personality of the Year at the recent T3 Gadget Awards 2009, says people are developing emotional human relationships with handsets like the Apple iPhone 3GS.

In part one of our wide-ranging video chat, the Black Adder star, who finished fourth in T3's annual Tech 100 list, says that while he was a little underwhelmed by Apple's latest mobile, he was soon won over with how the sheer speed of the device kept it ahead of the competition.

He tells T3: "Apple has a way of undermining one's disapproval. I have to say when the 3GS arrived, I thought 'well I was hoping for a bit more than this'. It's fine, but it's really just a 3G souped-up. It's like one of those boy racer Fords from the 80s that had an 'S' after it.

"But it's damn smart. It's almost as if they knew that the rivals were bringing out phones that were better than the year before, but on last year's chipset so wouldn't have the speed, which explains this weird concentration on 'S' for speed. The minute you play with it and then try a rival you think 'come on!'. The iPhone has this marvelous quality where you swear at it less.

"That's Apple's great achievement. They know that if a smartphone lives up to what it should be then it is something, as human beings, we will have an emotional relationship with because it's there all the time, it's our window on the world, it's our mouthpiece, it's everything we are and have. 'My life is in there' you hear people scream."

Fry also believes that by next year we'll be seeing an even more accomplished Apple iPhone, with the ability to project images onto a clear surface, either through a dock or an adaptor that plugs directly into the handset.

"I'd love to see projection," says the man with over 800,000 followers on Twitter. "Beyond question, in a year's time, we'll be used to the sight of someone plugging their iPhone into a dock and broadcasting those beloved powerpoints, keynotes and films."
