One of those three devices is reportedly at a point where it will be ready to launch next year.
However, one of the sources the paper spoke to has claimed that despite being months away from launch, Amazon may still scrap it. No reasons where given for why the retailer is considering dumping the project; nor if it is indeed the smartphone Amazon is rumoured to be working on.
Rumours of an Amazon smartphone have been around for the last couple of years. Ever since the company launched its first tablet, commentators have been questioning when the online retailer would make the leap into the smartphone market.
However, this is the first time that a manufacturing partner has been mentioned.
HTC has a long history of producing phones for other companies. Indeed, many of its original smartphones were white-label devices often resold under the network’s own name, such as the O2 XDA and T-Mobile MDA.
HTC was also the company behind the ill-fated Facebook phone, which launch and failed earlier this year.
No other details where given about the phone or the other devices Amazon is rumoured to be working on.
The phone is likely to be powered by a heavily forked version of Android.
Amazon has a history of forking Android for use on its own devices. Its Kindle Fire tablets use a heavily customised version of Google mobile operating system.
