T3 Ten: 10 things we LOVE about Apple
The design, the flair, the innovation, the iPod.. need we go on?
1. The iPod Touch
It seems to sum up everything about Apple. Beautiful design; an interface that's a feature in itself rather than just a tool for getting around; a price-tag that makes your scrotum shrink slightly. Textbook.
2. It's not Microsoft
In terms of corporate practice there is a hair's breadth of difference between Microsoft and Apple. But it's a space in which we can breathe.
3. The ads
Not the ones with dancing silhouettes. They're horrible. The ones with Mitchell or possibly Webb out of Mitchell and Webb playing a PC, while Webb or possibly Mitchell out of Mitchell and Webb plays a Mac. They're among the funniest, smartest ads ever.
4. The design
Some would say that great looks are the only thing Apple products have going for them, but such people also probably have a signed photo of Jeremy Clarkson in their bedroom, and seven pens in their shirt pocket.
5. The iMac
Every time a new one comes out, it raises the bar for how a computer can look and feel. The first one still looks unique today. The anglepoise-neck one was very under-rated and the first plastic, now aluminium "computer in a screen" model is quite simply the greatest thing ever designed by a human: powerful, user-friendly and sexually alluring, just like t3.com.
6. The innovation...
From all-in-one computers to icon- and windows-driven operating systems, Apple has always led the way.
7. ...And the inspired copying
From MP3 players to streamers to online music stores to touchscreen smartphones, Apple has always been magnificent when it comes to taking other people's half-arsed ideas, improving them beyond all recognition, then flogging them to the masses.
8. The glorious failures
Step forward the Cube - like ORAC from Blake's 7 as reimagined by Ikea - the aforementioned second-gen iMac and the so-nearly-great Newton PDA.
9. "It just works"
Arguably the greatest advertising slogan cum mission statement ever thought
10. The iPod Classic
The unglamorous workhorse of the 'Pod range is a real music lover's dream device. Your whole collection in one tiny box, for flip-all money. Great battery life; great looks; great value; great balls of fire. Great.
