Quick Summary

Apple could launch a new iMac with the M6 chip in the coming months. It's not thought that there will be any design changes.

The new model could come in a fresh new range of colours, however.

The iMac could be in line for an update soon, with new colours and the Apple M6 chip refreshing the model that was previously announced in 2024.

The iMac doesn't have the same update cadence as other Mac models so this refresh will come at a welcome time, although it's not thought that it will bring any other design changes with it.

The Apple M6 has not yet been released, but with Mark Gurman dedicating part of his Power On newsletter to the updated iMac, we're expecting to see the new model in the next month or so.

According to Gurman, the M6 will only be joined by colour changes and we don't know what those colours are as yet The M4 model offers Blue, Purple, Pink, Orange, Yellow, Green and Silver, but it might be that Apple aligns these with the MacBook Neo, which would see Silver, Blush, Citrus and Indigo.

As for the M6 chip, we don't know much about it, but there's a suspicion that it's going to be used in the new iMac and MacBook Pro in 2026, before we start to see M7 Mac models coming in in 2027 – skipping M6 Pro and M6 Max configurations.

What does Apple offer in the latest iMac?

The Apple iMac that launched in 2024 was exciting because of the fresh new colours and the power inside, but it stuck to the design that was introduced in 2021. That might leave some buyers wanting more, as it has a 24-inch display.

That was a little on the small side in 2021, and while the resolution is high, Apple's previous 27-inch iMac dwarfed it and many have been hoping for a 32-inch model. The problem is likely to be one of cost: while the high resolution is great, it would be expensive on a 32-inch display.

At the moment we have no idea when the new iMac might launch. Before we see a new Mac, we're likely to see the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and the new folding iPhone in September. It could be that Apple then has a Mac event in October to introduce the new iMac and perhaps the M6 MacBook Pro.

Beyond that, it's likely to be March or April 2027 before we'll see that new MacBook Pro that everyone is waiting for, with the touchscreen OLED display.

With prices generally increasing, many will be watching them closely to see if the new iMac gets more expensive, or matches the price of the model it replaces.
