I walked through TCL’s AI-powered home of the future at IFA, and the smartest ideas were the ones I barely noticed
From self-adjusting air conditioning to AI laundry and a robot companion, TCL’s vision of the connected home is all about giving you fewer things to think about
There’s a point where a smart home can become a little too smart for its own good. Give me clever lighting, better security and appliances that save me time, absolutely. Give me another six apps, 14 notifications and a fridge that wants to start a conversation every time I make a sandwich, and I’m considerably less interested.
Walking through TCL’s vision of the connected home at IFA 2026, however, I found a rather different idea taking shape. The brand doesn't want you to interact with technology more; instead, TCL wants its technology to require less attention in the first place.
It reflects a more human-centric approach to AI, where technology adapts to people and their everyday needs, rather than asking people to adapt to the technology.
That starts before you’ve even properly entered the house, with TCL’s concept door using facial recognition to identify the person approaching, unlock automatically, and then secure itself again once they're inside.
Once you’re inside, AiMe, TCL’s AI-powered companion for families with children aged 3 and above, is waiting to greet you on the other side. Futuristic as it may seem, AiMe reflects the broader idea behind TCL NXTHOME™: technology designed to feel intuitive, approachable and naturally at home in the spaces we live in.
Cooling without the constant fiddling
Nowhere is that idea clearer than with the FreshIN 3.0 Ultra. Air conditioning is hardly new, but TCL’s approach with the FreshIN 3.0 Ultra is interesting because much of its technology is designed to be less noticeable, with the T-AI Energy-saving technology proactively managing the system for you.
TCL says independent SGS testing found the technology can deliver energy savings of up to 37%, and while that’s an impressive number, what I appreciate is the broader design concept of TCL’s setup.
Smart-home products can sometimes look as though engineers designed them first and interior designers added later, but TCL has clearly put effort into softening the technology here. Across the stand, textured surfaces, considered colours and small details helped the appliances feel… homely.
That was particularly apparent in the FreshIN area, where the clean fascia and understated design made the technology feel far more approachable than the specification sheet might suggest.
The FreshIN system brings fresh outside air into the room, while TCL’s Gentle Breeze technology is intended to avoid the unpleasant blast of cold air you sometimes get from conventional air conditioning.
And, let’s face it, when you’re at home, you just want the room to feel comfortable (and not think about airflow patterns). Hands-free controls let you do that, meaning you won’t even need a remote or tweak settings as conditions change.
Chores lose some friction
Laundry is part of everyday life, and while it’s far from glamorous, it can still benefit from clever AI applications. Let’s face it: over 80% of households use no more than three programmes on their washing machine because we don’t know which option is best for the clothes we have.
Ideally, we want to put our clothes in, avoid ruining anything expensive and get on with something more interesting. TCL AI SuperDrum Laundry Tower P9 Ultra does just that, using AI fabric detection to help determine the right care for what you put inside and reduce the guesswork in choosing programmes.
The tall, integrated design looked premium on the stand, while TCL’s demonstration setup made the automatic side of the process feel like the main attraction. I should also admit that the transparent demonstration washing machine on the stand was one of the things I wanted most, even though it wasn't an actual product you can buy.
TCL’s refrigeration technology follows a similar pattern. A smart fridge can have all the intelligence in the world, but if it dominates your kitchen visually, it has missed half the point. TCL’s approach puts as much emphasis on fitting into the space as on what happens inside the appliance.
The TCL Free Built-in Refrigerator is designed to sit flush in a modern kitchen, while its food-care technology helps maintain better conditions for keeping ingredients fresh.
Even details such as the low-effort door mechanism – designed so the refrigerator can be opened easily with a single finger – contribute to the feeling that somebody has actually thought about how these products are used throughout the day.
A robot makes more sense than I expected
AiMe, the family companion robot wandering around your home, remains considerably more sci-fi than an air conditioner adjusting itself in the background, but seeing AiMe within TCL’s wider smart-home concept makes its purpose easier to understand.
Within TCL’s vision, AiMe becomes another interface between you and an increasingly connected home, one with considerably more character than tapping another icon on your phone.
Technology can feel surprisingly sterile on a trade-show stand, yet TCL surrounded its products with soft furnishings, warmer materials, colours, and textures meant to show how they might actually live alongside you.
As AI starts finding its way into almost every product category, TCL’s approach at IFA points to a more human-centric direction: AI that responds to real needs, reduces everyday friction and makes technology feel more natural and intuitive to live with.
After walking through TCL’s connected home, the standout idea was the absence of all those little moments where technology normally asks something of you. The door unlocks, the air stays comfortable, the washing machine works out how to look after your clothes, and the fridge quietly takes care of your food.
Perhaps the smartest version of the smart home isn’t the one with the most technology but one you barely have to think about.
