Not all Mini-LED TVs are the same — here’s how TCL scales the technology to offer impressive visuals across its ranges

Mini-LED has rapidly become one of the dominant technologies at the premium end of the LCD TV market — you'll now find the term plastered across TVs ranging from relatively affordable models to flagships costing many thousands of dollars. But while two TVs may both carry the Mini-LED badge, that doesn't mean the technology underneath them is identical.

What is Mini-LED?

Mini-LED is a backlighting technology specifically designed for LCD screens that uses hundreds or thousands of tiny — ‘mini’ — LEDs, which are then divided into independently controlled local dimming zones. It’s important to note that Mini-LED doesn’t describe the panel itself — it just denotes a specific type of LCD backlighting.

The exact number of local dimming zones is one of the biggest differentiators between models. Depending on the TV, the figure can range from a few hundred to well over 10,000 — and understanding why can tell you a great deal about what you're actually paying for.

A simple way to picture the importance of dimming zones is a night-time scene with a bright moon against a black sky. Ideally, you’d want your TV to illuminate only the area behind the moon while keeping everything else around it dark. If a Mini-LED TV has 100 dimming zones, then one zone may cover a large area of the screen. To make the moon bright, the entire zone has to be illuminated, which can cause a visible haloing effect around it, otherwise known as blooming.

However, in a Mini-LED TV with 1,000 zones, the illuminated area can be made to more closely match the exact pixels that make up the moon on screen. Increase the number of zones to 5,000, and that area becomes more accurate still. In short, the more zones, the finer the control the TV has over where light appears. This should result in deeper black levels, less blooming, higher perceived contrast and more convincing HDR imagery.

It’s also important to note that a Mini-LED TV’s zone count isn’t always directly correlated with performance. For example, a TV with 2,000 local dimming zones isn’t automatically twice as good as a TV with 1,000 zones. Several other factors affect a TV’s performance, including the onboard processor, which decides, frame by frame, how bright a zone should be and also impacts how many luminance steps (or different brightness levels) the backlight supports.

Then there’s the screen size. Ideally, the dimming zone count should increase relative to the size of the screen — a 55-inch TV with 1,000 zones will have finer control compared to an 85-inch TV with 1,000 zones, for example. And subsequently, a 98-inch model having twice as many zones as a 65-inch model doesn't necessarily mean its local dimming is twice as precise, because those zones are illuminating a much larger display.

How TCL’s Mini-LED range scales

TCL was one of the earliest manufacturers to bring Mini-LED TVs to market and now offers a range of models to suit a wide variety of budgets and preferences, from the the C6L QD-Mini LED through to the C7L and C8L SQD-Mini LED models, before culminating in the flagship X11L.

Moving up the range doesn’t simply bring more dimming zones and higher brightness, either. For the C7L upwards, TCL has employed its new SQD-Mini LED technology, which changes the way the television handles both light and colour.

The C6L sits at the more accessible end of TCL’s current Mini-LED range, but still pairs its Mini-LED backlight with quantum-dot technology. While the Mini-LED system is responsible for controlling brightness and contrast across the screen, the quantum-dot layer is designed to improve colour purity and expand the range of colours the TV can reproduce, particularly at higher brightness levels.

That combination is what TCL refers to as 'QD-Mini LED', and it gives the C6L a more advanced colour system than a conventional Mini-LED LCD without quantum-dot enhancement.

The step-up C7L introduces TCL’s proprietary Super Quantum Dot (SQD) technology. It’s available in sizes from 55 inches to 98 inches, with the number of precise dimming zones increasing with the screen size. The smaller 55-inch has 800 zones, while the larger 98-inch has 2,176 zones, for example.

The TCL C8L takes things further still with even more dimming zones — 2,040 in the 65-inch model; 2,584 in the 75-inch, 3,200 in the 85-inch and 4,032 in the 98-inch. The C8L is also capable of higher peak brightness and it uses a superior WHVA LCD panel, designed to handle ultra-wide viewing angles to perform better with handling reflections.

Finally, there’s the X11L, representing the flagship end of TCL’s 2026 SQD-Mini LED range. Available in 75-inch, 85-inch and 98-inch sizes, it pushes the dimming-zone count as high as 20,736 on the largest model. The X11L is capable of hitting a staggering 10,000 nits of brightness.

But SQD-Mini LED is about more than simply increasing the total number of zones.

What is TCL SQD-Mini-LED?

SQD-Mini LED builds on the same fundamental principle of Mini-LED technology, but combines TCL’s Precise Dimming system with its Super QLED technology and an Ultra Colour Filter. The latter is designed to more precisely control the light passing through the LCD panel, helping improve colour purity while reducing interference between neighbouring areas of the image.

In other words, where increasing the number of dimming zones gives the TV finer control over where light is produced, SQD-Mini LED is also intended to improve the quality of that light once it reaches the panel. TCL claims its current SQD-Mini LED models can reproduce up to 100% of the BT.2020 colour gamut, while their more advanced backlight systems are designed to preserve bright highlights alongside deeper blacks.

TCL Mini-LEDs cater to a wide range of budgets, and the underlying hardware scales as you move up through the ranges. More accessible models combine Mini-LED backlighting with quantum-dot colour and advanced processing systems to deliver an impactful image.

The C7L, C8L and X11L introduce yet more advanced SQD-Mini LED systems, higher brightness and significantly greater dimming precision. This means there isn’t a single TCL Mini-LED experience, but instead a clear progression from attainable performance through to flagship-level picture technology and quality.
