The new Zenvo Aurora may have just rewritten the rulebook on what hypercars can be. The Danish marque's latest creation is now entering its final stages of development, and on paper at least it looks utterly bonkers.

Sitting behind the driver is a brand-new 6.6-litre quad-turbocharged V12 called Mjølner – yes, named after Thor's hammer – producing a staggering 1,250bhp on its own.

Add in three electric motors and total output climbs to an almost unbelievable 1,850bhp, making it the most powerful production V12 powertrain ever created.

That's enough muscle to make even established hypercar royalty look a little underpowered. The all-wheel-drive Aurora Tur is targeting a top speed of around 280mph (450km/h), while Zenvo claims it'll sprint from 0-62mph in just 2.3 seconds and hit 248mph in only 17 seconds. Those are numbers that edge into rocket-launch territory rather than everyday motoring.

Despite the outrageous figures, Zenvo says the engine has been engineered with more than outright power in mind. Developed alongside MAHLE Powertrain, the V12 revs to 9,800rpm and uses advanced jet-ignition technology.

This improves combustion efficiency while helping it comply with increasingly strict emissions regulations. It shows that even the maddest supercars can't completely ignore modern environmental rules.

The Aurora itself is an all-new machine rather than an evolution of Zenvo's previous cars. Built around a lightweight carbon-fibre monocoque, it will be offered in two flavours: the road-focused, all-wheel-drive Tur and the lighter, rear-wheel-drive Agil. This sacrifices some hybrid assistance in favour of maximum track performance. Production will be limited to just 100 cars in total, making it as exclusive as it is outrageous.

Of course, exclusivity doesn't come cheap. Prices start from more than €2.8 million before you've even considered personalisation, putting the Aurora firmly into collector territory.

Still, if you've got that sort of money lying around, it's hard to imagine a more theatrical way to spend it. After all, there aren't many cars that can genuinely claim to have the heart of a fighter jet wrapped in something roughly the size of a go-kart.
