iPad app news: Skype app officially arrives

After earlier misfire, Skype returns to App Store

Long wait over for iPad owners.

Skype has finally launched its official app for iPad, meaning tablet-owners no longer have to get by on the iPhone version.

The free to download Skype for iPad app appeared on the App Store on Tuesday with a completely new, tablet-optimised user interface.

The application will offer video chat for those lucky enough to own an iPad 2, as well as VoIP calls and instant messaging with all of your Skype contacts.

The new interface presents your contacts as cards, which can be opened and then it's easy to choose whether you want video chat, IM, voice calling or SMS.

All of the activities can be performed over 3G or Wi-Fi, across all platforms, which gives Skype an edge over Apple's own FaceTime app, which only offers Apple-to-Apple conversations over Wi-Fi.

You can get your hands on the official Skype app for iPad from the iTunes now. Earlier today, the Skype app had appeared in the App Store before disappearing. We're pleased to say it appears to be here to stay now.
