Black Friday is almost here. The blockbuster shopping event, which originated in the United States as a way for retailers to get themselves "in the black" – as opposed to in the red after the Thanksgiving holidays, falls on Friday November 23 this year.

Although a swathe of stores have already taken the wraps off their latest discounts and deals, there are likely to still be a few surprises on the day itself.

Ahead of the sales, Martin Lewis – self-styled Money Saving Expert™ – revealed his advice, tips and tricks for those looking to nab a bargain on Black Friday during the latest episode of his Money Show Live program on ITV, which aired on Tuesday November, 20 at 8pm.

"Black Friday has become the big pre-Christmas discount bonanza," Lewis announced. "Yet the most important thing to remember is it's only a saving if you were going to buy anyway. If stores tweak your spending nipples, and make you buy unplanned things, it's a loss.

"Remember my money mantras – before you buy anything, ask yourself: 'Do I need it, is it worth it, have I checked whether it's cheaper elsewhere?' If the answer to any of those is no, don't buy it. And even if it's yes, ensure you can afford it."

Amazon UK

Considering the thousands of deals available on Amazon already, Martin Lewis hasn't highlighted much from the Seattle-based retailer. However, the Alexa-powered Echo Dot (now £20, RRP £49) and Fitbit Charge 3 (now £80, RRP £140) in particular caught his eye.

Boots

There's up to 50% off available on some items in the Black Friday sale at Boots. Martin Lewis recommends shoppers compare prices to make sure they're definitely getting a bargain, but highlights half price Armani fragrances (now £24.99, RRP £49).

Now TV

Lewis was keen on the discounts to the Entertainment, Sky Cinema, and Sky Sports Passes, which offer a contract-free way to access premium channels and on-demand content from satellite firm Sky TV.

Ikea

If you're still stuck for a Christmas tree this year, Ikea is throwing in a £20 voucher when you plump for a £25 tree on Thursday November 22, 2018.

KFC

If you're felling peckish after all the deals shopping around Black Friday, Martin Lewis highlighted this little-known promotion. If you download the KFC app on iOS and Android, the fast-food chain will be handing out free portions of chips without the need to buy anything else. Finger-licking good.

Nike

Martin Lewis is also keen to highlight the Nike promotion. Unfortunately, this one is online-only so you won't be able to drop into a high street store and try the shoes on beforehand. But if you know what you want ahead of time, Nike is slashing 30% off the price of its shoes this Black Friday.
