Netflix has a big month ahead of it – August brings a whole new list of films and shows being added to the service, and anyone who's looked over the full range knows that there are too many to really process. That hasn't stopped me, though. I've taken a deep look into what's coming and filtered out all the chaff.

That means you'll find five genuine highlights below, each one worthy of your interest. Check them out with trailers embedded for your convenience, as well as details of when they'll start streaming, so that you can circle the relevant dates in your diary if you're really motivated.

The Last House

• Streaming from: 7 August

This is a wild-looking one – a horror movie that definitely has elements of sci-fi playing around in its web. The Last House stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as a husband and wife who wake up one day, get their kids ready like normal, then discover that they've been sealed in their house.

In fact, it doesn't take too long for them to realise that this might be happening to everyone, a sort of pandemic-style lockdown being enforced by seemingly supernatural forces. Whether the source is alien or paranormal, I can't be sure, but the trailer makes the movie look properly unsettling, and it could be quite a hit when it arrives early in August.

The Whisper Man

• Streaming from: 28 August

Another scary-looking thriller rounds out the month on Netflix's side, but it's probably the most high-profile addition of the whole month. The Whisper Man makes me think of Zodiac every time I watch its trailer – something about the oppressive atmosphere of Fincher's film is summoned up by the rain and grottiness of this new movie's setting.

Adam Scott plays a father whose son goes missing, and he soon realises that it's the work of a serial killer who'd been locked up for a long time but might now be out and about. He's forced to turn to his estranged dad (Robert De Niro, no less), who once put that killer away, and there are clearly plenty of secrets to be spilled about what happened all those years ago.

My Brilliant Career

• Streaming from: 13 August

If you want something a little more light-hearted, don't worry – Netflix isn't exclusively making scary stuff this month. This lovely series set in Australia, for example, might scratch the itch of any costume drama fan. It's the story of a spirited young woman who doesn't want to conform to expectations.

Rather than simply waiting to be courted and married, she decides to see the world as best she can, and to make the most of her talent for writing while she does it. Of course, that's too simple – the fact that love is going to land in her lap while she does so should make things more complicated.

Don't Say Good Luck

• Streaming from: 14 August

Another romantic-looking movie, but set in a very different time, Don't Say Good Luck pits all the normal travails and challenges of adolescence against a common but no less sad tragedy. Adam Sandler's daughter Sunny stars as a teenager whose mother is extremely sick, but who has her own regular problems to compartmentalise at the same time.

That's a familiar story for so many of us, and it looks like the film's approach should be really heartwarming, as she goes through moments that are normal but also at times extraordinary. Growing up can be brutal, as most of us know, but this looks like it might do a good job of capturing some of the sheer joy that comes our way during the process.

Outer Banks (Season 5)

• Streaming from: 20 August

One of Netflix's most long-running ongoing shows is coming to an end this month, with Outer Banks finally taking a bow. Its story of treasure hunters and fierce rivalries has taken some surprising twists over the years, and had some shocking enough moments, but now it looks like it's all about to end.

The Pogues have one last heist in their sights, but with more power than ever arrayed against them, they're going to have to rely on each other and their wits to get through everything. The big question is whether they'll all make it, or whether some of them will be left behind while the others ride off into the sunset once more.

We're sitting right at the very end of July, which can only mean one thing – we're about to start a whole new month of streaming. If you're a Prime Video subscriber wondering what's coming down the pike for you, you're in luck, because I've taken the time to check out everything on the way.

There are some big arrivals, too, with one of Prime Video's most popular shows returning, and more than one steamy romance arriving to ensure that you can get hot under the collar if you so choose. Check out the five highlights that you need to know about below, each with a trailer and release date for you to plan around.

Reacher Season 4

• Streaming from: 12 August

Shows don't really come any bigger than Reacher – or, should I say, characters don't. The biggest crime-solver out there is back for a fourth season, and by now the template shouldn't need much introduction. Reacher always manages to find trouble, and almost always manages to sort it out by the end of one of his stories.

He generally does so while accumulating a new coterie of locals to help him, and this season looks like no exception. When he happens upon a distressed woman on a train, his attempts to help her can't save her life. This leaves him unable to move on until he understands what she was going through, and that means he'll tug at the thread of a criminal conspiracy, as always.

Sterling Point

• Streaming from: 5 August

If you want a coming-of-age story with a few more twists and turns than the average, then Sterling Point could be ideal. It's the tale of a young woman who discovers that her grandfather and her mother had secrets she could never imagine. When she inherits a remote cabin in Sterling Point, she goes to see what it's like.

Little does she know, she'll soon encounter a half-sister, and will realise that her mother had episodes in her life that she can hardly imagine. With romance and self-discovery all blended into the mix, Sterling Point seems like a great little option if you want a heartfelt drama with plenty of intriguing plot details.

The Last Sunrise

• Streaming from: 26 August

For those in the mood for a purer slice of romance, though, the end of August will introduce The Last Sunrise, which is set on the beaches of Mallorca. Oriah is a young woman in search of a direction for her life, dealing with some difficult circumstances of her own. She goes to Mallorca with her mum, a property developer looking to build a hotel in the area.

Little does Oriah know that she'll soon meet the man of her dreams, with the only big complication being that she's not intending to stay in Mallorca beyond the summer, and that her mum is buying up his family's land for the hotel. That kicks off some broody moments, from the looks of things, as well as some seriously steamy scenes.

The Chosen in the Wild with Bear Grylls

• Streaming from: 9 August

If you didn't know that Bear Grylls had found god, you'll know after this trailer. This show is a crossover between his usual survivalist stuff and Amazon's The Chosen, a retelling of the life of Jesus Christ. That show has been running for quite some time now, and this is clearly a way to promote it.

Grylls will take some of the core cast of The Chosen out on amazing adventures in the wilderness. They'll find their limits and in some cases push past them, to get a bit of a sense of what living in the wild could really mean. Don't be surprised if there are some themed parts, too – like Jesus living in the desert, which would be an obvious choice.

Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter

• Streaming from: 20 August

One of the greatest tennis players to ever grace the court, it's remarkable that Novak Djokovic is still playing at the highest level, even if his career is in its twilight era now. He just reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, to underline the fact that his longevity pretty much defies belief, and this all-access doc will hopefully give some interesting insight into his psychology and journey.

We know that he's prickly, and we know that he's taken unbelievable care of himself over the last two decades and more, but getting a sense of what he's like off the court could be fascinating. These titans of sport aren't all that common, so any profile of them can be a really scintillating watch.

Sky has finally added access to Hayu for subscribers, bundling in a catalogue that includes some must-watch reality shows like Below Deck and Real Housewives.

The addition of Hayu was first announced alongside Sky's restructuring of its content off the back of the UK launch of HBO Max. That saw Sky lose some of its exclusive access and in response, Sky bundled in HBO Max, Disney+ and Hayu instead.

While access to Disney+ (Standard with Ads) happened in March 2026, subscribers on the Sky Ultimate TV package have been patiently waiting for Hayu to land. The move integrates Hayu content into the Sky TV homepage, without the need to open the app or sign-in.

The wait feels like it has been a long one: Sky previewed some Hayu content in March, but the loose timeframe of "July" for wider access has seen Sky members hammering the Sky Community forum, with the sentiment basically being "There are 31 days in July. Today is the first. It could be any of them."

Interestingly it took Sky until the end of July to actually make this move, with confirmation on 29 July that Hayu was now accessible.

The free content comes to Sky Ultimate TV customers, while Sky Q (except Essentials and Basic) as well as Sky+ customers get access to the new content. Those who already subscribe to Hayu can cancel their subscription, because you now have access to it all - including in the Sky Go app.

The Hayu integration not only includes the back catalogue, but most new episodes will land on Sky at the same time as in the US, so they won't be spoilt by social media while you're waiting for them to go live.

Hayu is packed with binge-worthy entertainment, with Below Deck being one of the highlights, tracking the adventures of the crew aboard private charter yachts, where the guests are as much part of the show as the captain and the on-board stewards.

Then there's a Real Housewives, Vanderpump Rules and Summer House. If you want to peek into the world of the wealthy, follow dating drama and love trysts, Hayu is probably the destination for you.

Fortunately, it's all now bundled into Sky's £24 a month Ultimate TV package.

When the Barbie movie hit so spectacularly in 2023, it was pretty immediately obvious to some observers that we'd probably get more movies based on nostalgic toys in its aftermath. In fact, Barbie creator Mattel was quick to confirm that it had more plans on that front, including a movie based on its Matchbox cars.

Whether you thought that sounded preposterous or not, fast-forward by a couple of years and here we are – Matchbox The Movie has a trailer, and it's coming to Apple TV on 9 October, so it's very much real. That trailer won't really surprise you if you've thought about what a Matchbox movie might look like, but it does have some interesting touches.

The biggest selling point, you'd imagine, is John Cena in the lead – the WWE superstar has long since proved that he can helm a movie capably, and his comic timing remains underrated. He had a cameo in Barbie, as you might remember, so it fits that Mattel tapped him up this time.

That said, he's not alone. Rounding out the cast are Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro and Teyonah Parris; they're playing the grown-up versions of a friendship group that Cena was part of as a young boy, with fond memories of playing with toy cars together. Now, Cena's character is a spy who needs to track down a missing warhead, and somehow needs his friends' help to do it.

It's all relatively preposterous, of course, and more than a little reminiscent of the Fast & Furious franchise – but that's what Apple will be hoping for. After all, with that mega-series on basically a hiatus right now, there's a gap in the market for gas-fuelled action movies featuring many, many car crashes.

That said, this is a Skydance production, which is becoming something of a warning label in this streaming era. The fact that it's heading straight to Apple TV instead of hitting cinemas first isn't the best sign, but we might know more when forthcoming trailers give us more to go on.

Disney has started heavily promoting Infinity Vision with the release of the latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer, encouraging moviegoers to book tickets for the new premium format.

The name might sound like an all-new cinema technology, but that's not actually what's happening. Infinity Vision is Disney's own certification programme for premium large-format cinemas. It's designed to help audiences find the best screens available regardless of which cinema chain they visit.

So what exactly is Infinity Vision, how does it compare to IMAX and Dolby Cinema, and where can UK film fans experience it?

Infinity Vision isn't a new projector

Unlike IMAX or Dolby Cinema, Infinity Vision isn't a proprietary projection or sound system.

Instead, Disney has created a certification that premium cinema screens must meet before they can carry the Infinity Vision branding. Those auditoriums need to deliver huge screens, laser projection, high brightness and immersive premium audio, ensuring films are presented to a minimum technical standard.

That means the actual technology may vary depending on where you watch. One Infinity Vision screen might use Dolby Atmos sound, while another could rely on a different premium audio system, as long as it meets Disney's certification requirements.

Why Disney created Infinity Vision

Avengers: Doomsday launches in December at the same time as Dune: Part Three, which has reportedly secured the coveted IMAX exclusivity window. That means Marvel's biggest film won't enjoy widespread IMAX availability during its opening release.

Infinity Vision allows Disney to highlight hundreds of other premium large-format auditoriums around the world instead of relying solely on IMAX branding.

It's also a useful way to simplify what has become a confusing landscape of cinema brands including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, ScreenX, 4DX, Cineworld Superscreen, Odeon iSense, Everyman XL and many more.

Is Infinity Vision better than IMAX?

IMAX remains a complete end-to-end system, with its own cameras, mastering process, projection standards and specially designed auditoriums.

Infinity Vision doesn't replace that. Instead, it certifies existing premium auditoriums that meet Disney's technical requirements.

In practice, an Infinity Vision screening could look and sound superb, but the experience will depend on the specific cinema rather than a single standardised format. That's why many industry commentators see Infinity Vision as a complement to existing premium screens rather than a direct IMAX competitor.

Where can you watch Infinity Vision in the UK?

Disney hasn't published a definitive UK cinema list yet, but Infinity Vision works with participating premium large-format screens rather than creating new auditoriums.

That means UK viewers should expect participating premium screens at major chains to be certified where they meet Disney's standards. As bookings roll out for Avengers: Doomsday, supported locations will be identified during the ticket booking process.

If you're planning to see Marvel's biggest film of the year, choosing an Infinity Vision screening should mean you're getting one of the biggest, brightest and best-sounding presentations available, even if it doesn't carry the IMAX logo.

Reacher's back, and he's just as gigantic as ever – as if anyone would expect anything different. Lee Child's iconic lone wanderer has become perhaps Prime Video's biggest star, and his show also helpfully proves that it's possible to put seasons out without waiting years between them (like some other, bigger-budgeted franchises).

We have a proper trailer for the show's new season now, ahead of its premiere on 12 August, so you don't have to wait too long before you'll be able to start crunching through it yourself. Alan Ritchson's back and it looks like he might have a very twisty story to take part in this time around.

Like all good Reacher stories, this one starts with Reacher making a journey, but things rapidly take a turn when he spots a woman looking very distressed on her own in his train. When he approaches her, she pulls a gun, but it doesn't take long for her to end up dead. Reacher's nature compels him to pull at the thread and figure out why any of this happened.

This swiftly brings him to the attention of various federal law enforcement agencies, along with a criminal element, and many of the clues seem to point towards political involvement. It's a conspiracy, basically, and Reacher's going to make some new friends as he tries to figure it out with whatever level of violence is required.

He'll clearly recruit the dead woman's brother, who's a cop himself and is just as keen to understand what happened to his sister. More importantly, though, the trailer makes it very clear that we're going to get plenty of intense fight scenes for Ritchson to show off his now obvious commitment to the role.

He continues to inhabit the character really nicely, while also saying a whole lot of sensible things in interviews – US politics is clearly annoying to him right now, and who can blame him? Reacher returns in a couple of weeks, so expect to see more of him as he promotes what might just be Amazon's biggest show going by volume of biceps, if nothing else.

Here at T3 we've long since crowned Apple TV as the reigning monarch when it comes to sci-fi streaming. It's past the point where you even really need to prove this to anyone – most people know accept that it's clearly the best streaming service for sci-fi fans, but that hasn't stopped Apple from keeping going.

We've known for a good long while that it was working on a Neuromancer series, adapting the hugely influential novel by William Gibson, but now we've finally got a trailer. The show stars Callum Turner, but this teaser makes it nice and clear that we're going to have a wider cast of interesting characters to meet.

To be honest, although I've read Neuromancer, it's been nearly two decades since then, and I remember pretty much none of its plot. I'm torn over whether this means I can watch the show blind again on 22 January 2027 when it starts, or if that means I have time to re-read it before then.

Either way, I know from Apple's synopsis that Turner stars as Case, a gifted hacker living in the far-flung future, in a dystopian society where cyber-heists are some of the only ways that people can climb out of their social strata. Corporations basically rule the world, with little to no checks on their power.

What's really exciting is that this does look like it's going to attempt to be faithful to Gibson's descriptions of some fairly mad sights and sounds, and we get looks at moments that are as cyberpunk as anything that's been put on screen recently. Whether it can nail the wry, dark tone of the novel is anyone's guess at this stage.

The trailer has a pumping soundtrack, though, which makes it all feel impressively momentous, and that bodes very well. It's gutting that we have basically six months to wait now until we get to see the show, but at least that's plenty of time for the anticipation to build.

Make sure your streaming doesn't fail with these top-pick routers

Nary a week goes by without a big addition to the libraries of the world's biggest and best streaming services – it's a vital part of their plan to become people's default destination for entertainment. While the summer months are sometimes a little slower in the TV world, on streamers it's a different story.

That said, this is an interesting week for the twin dragons of Netflix and Prime Video, and the shows and movies they're adding are arguably a little less high-profile than some recent weeks. I've taken a look at every new project they're uploading, to pick out three intriguing highlights that you'll want to know about regardless.

The Bombing of Pan Am 103

• Streaming on: Netflix from 30 July

This looks like quite a heavy one, but as a co-production between Netflix and the BBC, The Bombing of Pan Am 103 might be one of the more important shows released this year. It tells the story of the Lockerbie bombing, but does so from multiple angles. It'll take in not just those on the plane, but also those on the ground in the UK and US, trying to investigate an unthinkable situation.

With a long time span to focus on and plenty of sensitivity given the very real event that it's portraying, everything points towards this being an extremely memorable show. That said, it's not going to be the easiest watch, for obvious reasons, so factor that in while you plan your evenings.

Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2

• Streaming on: Prime Video from 31 July

Prime Video brings the caped crusader back for a second season of this animated series, and it's got a great reputation. Fans of The Animated Series have been waiting for a real successor for quite some time now, and this version might just be the closest thing we've ever got.

It shows a version of Batman set in the golden age, without all the technology and gizmos that became associated with the character in some more recent portrayals. That arguably keeps the show simpler and more faithful to the detective roots, with mysteries forming a key role in its drama.

Final Project

• Streaming on: Netflix from 29 July

This interesting-looking Spanish-language show takes a look at cyberbullying and the toxic environment that high school can become for students if they're targeted by malicious classmates. Tamara is an alternative teenager who has become the butt of constant jokes and abuse from some popular kids.

Her final project for the year takes a twist when tragedy strikes Tamara, but the trailer makes it pretty clear that this might all be part of her plan to get revenge on her tormentors. This might sink without a trace, but don't be surprised if it becomes a sleeper hit, either – Netflix has form on that front.

Are we past the nepo-baby era? By that I don't mean are we now fine with them, but I am curious as to whether people still care as much about the whole concept. Rightly or wrongly, it seems clear that they're here to stay, and Netflix's latest movie is a great example of that – starring none other than Adam Sandler's daughter in the lead role.

To do her proper justice, though, it's Sunny Sandler (what a name), and this isn't exactly her first rodeo. She's had roles in multiple of her dad's movies over the years, including You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah recently, and a small part in Happy Gilmore 2. Now she's the lead in Don't Say Good Luck, which looks like a very different proposition.

The first key point is that the movie doesn't star Adam Sandler – it's a totally fresh project, and Sunny Sandler seems to be the key to it. She plays Sophie Birenbaum, a high schooler going through all the regular stress of school life, as she tries to get a role in the school musical without making a fool of herself.

The real meat of the emotion in the movie, though, comes from the fact that Sophie's mum (Melanie Lynskey) gets what sounds like a cancer diagnosis. That's a devastating turn, and it clearly rocks her dad (Max Greenfield) too, as you'd expect. Sophie's attempts to maintain some normality while dealing with this traumatic process will clearly be pretty emotional to behold.

In fact, this first trailer makes the movie look incredibly sweet, and full of that adolescent lack of confidence that can be so affecting to watch when it's done right. Sunny Sandler might be in this position because of her father's fame (that's quite hard to argue with, to be honest), but from the glimpses we see here, she's clearly going to be quite a performer in her own right.

Plus, she might have the bravery to do what her dad did and pick some weird projects – that's the only way to end up in something magical like Punch-Drunk Love, after all. I'm not saying Don't Say Good Luck is in that bracket, but it'll be interesting to see how it's received. It hits Netflix on 14 August.

Now that the World Cup is over, I'm finally redressing the imbalance in my viewing habits in recent times – meaning I don't have to watch multiple football matches every day. For one thing, I'm gagging to get back to actually watching movies now that my evenings are my own, but it's also allowed me to catch up on House of the Dragon.

I've been a moderate defender of the show in the last couple of years, since I think it's definitely maintaining a higher average quality than the last two or three seasons of Game of Thrones, and that makes it highly watchable. That said, its third season has been hit and miss, to me.

It opened with a great sense of momentum and some big battles, staged at the sort of scale that few other TV operations can match. Some truly crazy practical sets and backdrops make it look far better than most of its rivals, and the craft that go into it is hard to overestimate.

Still, a few episodes later and I can't help but feel we're back in the mire of plot conveniences, confusing timelines and locations, and a general sense that the showrunners don't know how to keep its war going credibly without basically having to remove characters (and dragons) from the board.

Now, the show has a mid-season trailer giving glimpses of what's coming in the second half of the season, and it's giving hope that the short answer will be "more action".

We certainly seem to get a look at battle formations and siege tactics, as the Targaryen forces encircle Tumbleton, where their enemies have taken root – a battle that looks set to decide much of the outcome of the bloody war of succession.

It's fairly clear that a whole heap of characters are going to converge on the town, but what I'd like is for some more clarity when we're not in the middle of big battles. It's all well and good having tentpole moments a couple of times a season, but the show's a little too blurry outside of these sequences.

Part of the genius of Game of Thrones' animated intro sequence was that it reminded you where everyone was in relation to each other as each episode kicked off, and that made it all the more frustrating when distances ceased to matter in later seasons (as the writing got lazier).

Now, I'd say House of the Dragon is committing the same sin, and without even a map to help viewers figure anything out, it's really confusing to try to work out where people are. That makes it all the more baffling when we're told that a dragon like Vhagar, the size of a jet plane, can't be found despite the number of sheep she seems to consume.

In the same way that Daemon (Matt Smith) was locked in purgatory in Harrenhal last season, it's also now Aemond's turn, and it's just as boring the second time around. Unpredictable characters who turn events on their head are the heart of this series' attraction, so putting them in a box for hours at a time to keep things simple is a dull solution.

I'm hopeful that the season can right that wrong and get Aemond and others back into more meaningful positions quicker than I'm worried about, but it's an unknown until those new episodes arrive. Still, from the trailer it's clear that I'll at least get some sort of denouement to enjoy in the next few weeks.

Over the last decade or so, Netflix has repeatedly succeeded in predicting what people want from the biggest streaming service on the planet, and one of its biggest successes has been knowing that romance is hugely popular. People want steamy love stories, and they want them regularly.

It's already got more than one giant franchise out of this tactic, with Bridgerton standing out as the jewel in its crown, and now we're getting another new one – My Brilliant Career. The story of a precocious young woman in Australia starts in 1900 and looks like a classic take on what it was like to be of marriageable age at a challenging time for women.

Philippa Northeast stars as Sybylla, that gifted young woman, who sees herself as an untameable writer, but has to contend with the expectations of her family, who see marriage as her only way to economic security. The problem for Sybylla is that they're not entirely wrong – her chances of becoming a writer are slim, despite her undeniable talent.

She decides to humour them and meet some young men, all the while intending to see as much of the world as she can to fuel her writing. Little does she know, though, that she'll meet more than one man who does indeed ignite something in her, which is the one twist she wasn't expecting.

One of those men is a familiar face – Christopher Chung from Slow Horses, in a role that's the polar opposite of his more famous one. Rather than a repulsive IT support worker, he's a hunky romantic lead, with Jake Dunn playing his main rival. It looks like a classic love triangle as Sybylla is faced with a choice between the two.

Her other option, of course, is to ignore them both and stick to her craft, so it'll be fascinating to learn how it all unfolds – as someone who obviously hasn't read the beloved Australian novel this is all based on. The show hits Netflix on 13 August and looks like it'll bring some stunning costumes with it: get this one in your diary.

The advent of a new week means an age-old question for those with subscriptions to Netflix, Prime Video or both – what's coming out? These huge streamers know that the only way to keep us all satisfied is by maintaining a steady stream of new shows and movies for us to pick from, after all.

72 Hours

• Streaming on: Netflix from 24 July

This looks like about as much of a throwback comedy as you can reasonably expect from a big streaming service right now – Netflix is going broad-brush with a Kevin Hart movie about blokey exploits. He stars as a middle-aged man who finds himself accidentally added to the messaging group of a bunch of younger guys going on a stag trip.

He decides to throw caution to the wind and turn up to see what happens, and from there has what looks like a fairly wild three days. It seems fairly obviously inspired by The Hangover and its sequels, but with that age-gap dynamic providing a twist. Ridiculous, for sure, but possibly some fun low-maintenance silliness for an evening later this week.

Ransom County: Season 2

• Streaming on: Netflix from 23 July

When this show's first season came out, I said that it looked like a direct rival to the Yellowstone dynasty being built by the folks at Paramount+, and I stand by that comparison now that Ransom Canyon has an imminent second season. The show continues to focus on similar dynamics and storylines, giving us an insight into the complicated life of a rancher.

That said, there are some important differences – namely, that this show is much more focused on the relationships and love lives of its characters, and less on the politics and brutality of land ownership and disputes. So, again, it's a pretty low-maintenance watch, and if you enjoyed the first season, you'll doubtless be pleased to see it return.

The Wild Robot

• Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video from 24 July

This one's not a Prime Original, but in a lean week for Amazon's streamer, it's a pretty fantastic addition, especially for family viewing. Telling the story of a long-lost robot awakening into a world full of animals and trying to work out what its place in that tableau might be, it's a beautiful story.

It's got all the touchpoints you might want right now, including a focus on the dangers of technology compared to our natural roots, but also a touching optimism. Plus, the art style of its 3D animation is really gorgeous, with designs that are almost like painting shifting in front of your eyes.

It's not hard to see how Spain have reached their second World Cup final, and first since La Roja won their sole title in 2010. Luis de la Fuente's side have conceded just once in seven tournament games – to Belgium in the quarter-finals – and were at their calm, controlled best to swarm France in submission in the last four.

Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele barely got a kick as full-backs Pedro Porro and Marc Cucurella impressed both defensively and in providing width going forward. The sole disappointment has been Lamine Yamal's form, but with a World Cup final ahead of the fit-again 19-year-old, you wouldn't bet against the sinuous Barcelona forward from coming good when it matters most.

Another one-time Barça prodigy is responsible for Argentina reaching a fourth major tournament final in a row. Messi has eight goals and four assists, proof were it still needed that the 39-year-old's instincts remain as sharp as ever. The Flea delivered two assists to sink England late on in the semis in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory and, in a team built to get the best from their captain, has learned to conserve energy for when it matters most.

They are, though, vulnerable. Lionel Scaloni's side have trailed late on in three of their four knockout games, and barely snuck past Cape Verde in the other, with a singular refusal to be beaten their primary strength. No side has defended their world crown since Brazil in 1962. Now, Argentina are just 90 minutes from doing that and Messi from settling the GOAT argument for good.

People sometimes like to gripe that there are no new ideas any more, especially when it comes to movie pitches, and while I think there's plenty out there to disprove that, the big streamers do have a certain predilection for familiar plots. I'm not trying to do The Runner down before it even has a chance, but watch its trailer (released this week) and you'll probably get where I'm coming from.

The film will hit Prime Video on 2 September, starring Gal Gadot as Maia, a successful lawyer gearing up for a massive day in court. She's going to have a wildly unexpected time, though, thanks largely to a remote kidnapper played by Damian Lewis, who's going to be dictating her actions with terrible threats.

Maia's a single mum, and she starts her day by dropping her son Dylan at school, before heading out on her morning run to clear her mind. She doesn't make it home, though, because midway around her route she gets a call from Dylan's phone. It's Lewis' mysterious criminal, informing her that he's got Dylan and the only way to get him back safely is to follow instructions.

Those instructions? They appear to involve Maia heading into the centre of London to pick up a weapon, then making her way to a hotel where the witness she's about to use in a major legal case is staying. She has to kill that witness or lose her son, according to the kidnapper, and that's quite the quandary to be shoved into.

It's fairly obvious from the trailer that Maia will do her best to avoid complying, but she'll also face nightmarish complications including having her (folding) phone stolen at one point. The voice-over from Lewis is slightly interesting for how clear and studio-recorded it sounds, but perhaps that'll feel different in the final film.

I'm mostly struck by the similarities to Run Lola Run, another movie about a woman having to run around a city at the behest of criminals, but if The Runner can get close to that film's cult following it'll be doing exceptionally well. We'll know more in early September when it gets added to the Prime Video library.

For those who really pay attention to how the world of streaming operates, there's a curiosity every time a big blockbuster gets unveiled for one of the big platforms – who actually made it? While plenty of movies are labelled as "originals" for their host services, there's often one studio behind things – Skydance. It just made another movie for Apple TV, with all its regular hallmarks: Mayday.

The film, which just got its first trailer, looks like a fairly classic action-comedy, and like some of the films that Skydance has sold to Apple previously, I'm a little dubious about whether it can possibly be much good. To its credit, the trailer makes it obvious that it has some stuff going for it, though.

The movie stars Ryan Reynolds (still on a quest to be in a genuinely great movie at any point) opposite the illustrious Kenneth Branagh. The former is a US pilot shot down in Soviet Russia in 1987, while the latter is a US-obsessed local who rescues him in the hopes of getting both of them across the border to a better life. If that sounds quite serious, and actually really similar to the last third of Top Gun: Maverick, though, the tone of the trailer quickly clarifies things.

This is an action-comedy, of course, one of Skydance's staple genres for streaming movies, and that means a lot of quips and banter between Reynolds and Branagh (doing one of the broad-brush accents he's so fond of, like in Tenet). There are also clearly going to be some huge set-pieces, including at least one at a big military parade.

To be fair, the movie looks sprightly and fun, but I can't help but feel leery when I see that Skydance logo at the start of a trailer nowadays. You only have to check out the reviews for other movies it's made for Apple (like Ghosted or Fountain of Youth) to get a sense of how boring some of its output can be.

It's not helped by the sense that it sells its most mediocre (or worse) projects for streaming, reserving the best stuff for actual cinema distribution deals. Hopefully, Mayday can prove me wrong on that front, though, when it comes to Apple TV on 4 September.

It took me a few minutes to work out what movies I was reminded of when watching the new trailer for Netflix's The Whisper Man, but I made it there in the end. The first, and most impressive, is David Fincher's Zodiac, but I also think there's more than a little of Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners in the mix too. That's quite a cocktail.

The film, based on a best-selling novel (which is always a good sign plot-wise) takes a look at a fictional serial killer who seems to target children, at least as far as the trailer makes clear. Having been taken down years ago, he's somehow made it out of prison to start another rampage, and that brings generations of law enforcement into the game.

Adam Scott is one of the current kings of streaming at the moment, largely thanks to his absolutely explosive popularity in Severance, and he's here playing a far more regular joe – Tom Kennedy, who's unlucky enough to have his son kidnapped by the Whisper Man after his re-emergence.

Or is it just bad luck? Tom's father, played by Robert De Niro, happens to be the retired detective who put the killer behind bars years ago, which paints a target on his back. Tom's forced to patch things up with his distant parent in a desperate appeal for help. Meanwhile, in the actual police force, Michelle Monaghan plays the current detective assigned to the case, full of grit, determination and insight.

That makes the film look like a three-hander of great actors, but the most striking thing about the trailer, to me, is how grim the tone is. It's full of dim lighting and rainy nights, and looks oppressively colour-graded. That's what brings Zodiac and Prisoners to mind – two films about crime sprees that leave you wondering if there's any good in the world by the time they're over.

Hopefully, Netflix's story might have a slightly more optimistic ending than those two movies, but if it can get close to the same levels of quality, it'll be doing outstandingly well. The film drops on the streaming platform on 28 August, so there's well over a month left for the hype to build further.

There's a moment in Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die when the film perfectly captures a couple's acquiescence around school violence. It's as disturbing as it is funny – the thematic yin-yang line that director Gore Verbinski walks with such confidence.

You can watch Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die on most of the best streaming services – albeit if you pay for the rental. Disney+ is the movie's home in the UK, but I'd recommend you skip that step and jump straight to the 4K Blu-ray purchase for the best viewing experience.

I've long been saying that 4K Blu-ray is where it's at for quality – something that streamers just can't quite match. Or, indeed, that quality and standards can change at the drop of a hat. And Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die is as stunning to view as its zany story is enjoyable to absorb.

What's Good Luck... about?

As I'm sure you've seen from the trailer, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die is about a man (Sam Rockwell), who claims to be from the future. He arrives in an LA diner to deliver a pep talk and gather a crew in a quest to save the world.

But is the world too far gone to be saved? The movie is a brilliant analogy of how artificial intelligence (AI), social media and societal issues are affecting us today. But that's delivered through an often comedic veil that makes light of such core issues.

Much as Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die looks as though it could go down a 'time loop' rabbit hole, it instead treads its own path, following individual characters' stories, concluding in a setting that's somewhere between real-life-meets-videogame and total chaos.

Is Good Luck... well rated?

I've been waiting quite some time to watch this movie, so was pleased when the official 4K Blu-ray went on sale in June. Much as I've had the opportunity to watch it on long-haul plane journeys, I've refused due to basic in-flight entertainment screens and waited it out.

It was worth the wait, too, as the Dolby Vision HDR quality is second to none, as is the Dolby Atmos sound mix. Ideal to watch on one of the best OLED TVs with a surround sound system, as I have set up at home, for the most cinematic-like experience.

Much as critics have (fairly) called Verbinski's latest "a mess", I'm on the other side of the fence, having really enjoyed the movie. Plenty of others agree, too, with the 85% positive Rotten Tomatoes score holding strong.

That's no surprise to me, as Rockwell is a tour de force in this role. Haley Lu Richardson is no doubt a future star, Juno Temple is captivating, while Michael Peña is quietly brilliant. How Asim Chaudhry's agent landed him a role in this, however, I'll never know...

Nonetheless, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die is the sci-fi comedy hit you need in your life. And if you buy it on 4K Blu-ray then you'll have no regrets at that next movie night.

Here in the UK, the heat shows no sign of abating, even if we're all going to spend the week telling ourselves that 29 degrees is way better than 32 (it just about is). That means it's a great week to continue cowering inside, avoiding that heat with some good streaming.

Sure, if you have a portable air conditioner like me, then you'll be even happier, but the best news is that this is a really strong week for the best streaming services on the market (or, at least, the biggest ones). I've checked out everything being added to Netflix and Prime Video this week, to pick out three highlights that you're going to want to know about.

The Hawk

• Streaming from: 16 July

This looks like a real throwback from Netflix and Will Ferrell, who's picking things up again to play a somewhat forgotten fictional golfer trying to get back to the top level to complete the grand slam of majors that he never quite managed in his pomp. This time, though, he's going to have to contend against his own son, who's become the buttoned-up pro he never was.

Ferrell's character is called Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins, giving his name to the whole movie, and the project looks like an old-school comedy in the vein of Anchorman or Dodgeball, which means it might be fairly predictable, but also comforting. The real joy will almost certainly be in the ad-libs and seeing how far Ferrell is willing to take his performance – I'd bet way further than you think.

Heartstopper Forever

• Streaming from: 17 July

One of Netflix's most beloved series comes to an end not with another season, but with a feature film to send its characters off into the sunset. The story of Charlie and Nick's whirlwind school romance has captured millions of fans over the last few years, but with the two characters moving into a new phase of life, it's reached a natural stopping point.

That doesn't mean there's no tension to work out, though – far from it. With one going to university and the other staying at home, the big question will be how they keep their relationship going. Will they be up for the hard yards of long-distance love? Will one have to give up his dream for the other? Or will they call it quits? Expect this one to shoot up the charts as people tune in to find out when it arrives.

Ride or Die

• Streaming from: 15 July

If I had a dollar for every time a big streaming service made a movie about normal-seeming people who secretly live double lives as spies, I'd probably be able to buy a decent lunch by now – it's a topic that just can't seem to be left alone for more than a year without being brought back up. In fairness, this go-around from Prime Video does look a little more fun and inventive than some.

It stars Hannah Waddingham as that secret spy, alongside her best friend, played by Octavia Spencer, who's taken along for the ride when assassins target her bestie at the wrong moment. It's a classic fish-out-of-water gag that'll last for most of the movie, you'd guess, and Ride or Die will probably sink or swim based on the chemistry between those two leads.

The World Cup has been a genuine disaster for my normal routine when it comes to actually watching movies. I normally watch at least a couple each week, and in recent times, a lot of those have been on 4K discs, since I'm very much in my physical media era (and never plan to leave it).

Now that we're in the latter stages of the tournament, though, my commitment to watching basically every game that isn't completely absurd from a timezone perspective is finally less of an issue. There are just four games left in the tourney, and that means fallow evenings where I can catch up on my queue.

My most recent watch was the Brazilian drama I'm Still Here, a pick from a film club I'm in, and I really didn't expect it to unmask a great hidden feature for me on Apple TV. That's the app I watched the film through, via a free trial of the BFI Player (what a treat), as it's the slickest to navigate in my experience.

That said, the moment the first line of dialogue happened at the start of the movie, which is entirely in Portuguese, alarm bells rang for me. Perhaps it's been a while since I watched a foreign-language movie on Apple TV, or perhaps there's been an update, but the default subtitles were bigger than I wanted and on an opaque background, and I quite simply didn't like them.

When you write about technology as much as we do at T3, though, you get a sixth sense for software features, and I had a sense that Apple might let me customise them. I expected some other versions to choose from, but when I realised that I could create entire custom presets, I'll happily admit I was (and remain) impressed.

Apple TV lets you not only choose a font, but also customise the background opacity, the size, and the actual colour of your text. Plus, you can choose how that text is outlined for even better contrast (or more subtlety if you want it). It's genuinely a brilliant system and a great reminder of how accessibility features are a net good for everyone.

It's also classic Apple – a company that is sometimes easy to make fun of, but which clearly has a rigorous commitment to design principles and groundwork that many others can't match. I've tried various other streaming platforms to compare, and while plenty let you choose your font and size, almost none of them come close to matching the depth of Apple's customisation.

It only took me about 30 seconds to build a style that worked for me, and from there, it was time to unpause and watch the movie without the whole thing being undermined by annoyingly modern subtitles. If you've ever looked at subs on Apple TV and had even the slightest eyebrow-raise at them, make sure you check out the settings when you next watch something subtitled – it could upgrade your viewing experience in surprising ways.

Mobland has had a funny old year – with rumours of behind-the-scenes fallings-out circulating and stories about Tom Hardy walking away from the show seemingly ending up debunked. Whatever truth there may have been to some of those reports, the show's second season just got its first teaser trailer, confirming that it'll be on Paramount+ from 18 September.

The teaser goes out of its way to confirm that all the main cast members from last season are back (or, at least, the ones whose characters didn't die), including Hardy himself and both Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren, who play his bosses, a fearsome older crime duo. From my point of view, there's also one major addition to the cast that makes the show extremely interesting.

That addition is Johnny Flynn, the singer-songwriter who turned his hand to acting a good few years ago, and showed that he's pretty much equally good at both crafts (which is no small feat). He's joining the cast in a role that hasn't yet been detailed at all – although some reports seem to have become confused by Flynn's credit in the 2017 movie Beast.

That's not the name of his character this time around, to be clear – although there's a tiny chance it could be both. IMDb lists the character as "Frankie", though, so that's the likeliest outcome. Either way, I'm a big fan of Flynn's work (in particular in Emma), and he's increasingly demonstrating his range. Giving him a chance to go up against Hardy as a rival mob fixer could be just the opportunity he needs to get even more plaudits.

I didn't actually catch the first season of Mobland, either, so I'd have to drop back and catch up on it, although I know that my colleague Mike Lowe made a big case for Paramount+ back when that first season was coming out. Perhaps the show's second season will give the whole streaming service a bump.

After all, that's the whole point of showstopping series like Mobland for the platforms that make them. The real key, though, is in making good casting calls like the addition of Flynn – let's see who else it can tempt to the show with such decisions.

There's no doubting the scale of Netflix's streaming empire – it's been built over the course of a decade or so, and it involves some of the biggest franchises you could care to name, even if some of them are now over. From Stranger Things to Squid Game, there are behemoths in its library – but what's it's biggest current show?

By sheer viewership, something like Bridgerton almost certainly has a major shout, but I'd put a small vote in for The Gentlemen right now, not least because it's about to get a second season that looks far bigger than the first. From director and writer Guy Ritchie, this classic mob tale seems to be going from strength to strength, and leaning into its fun characters and arch tone.

The show stars Theo James as Eddie, also known as the Duke, along with Kaya Scodelario as his business partner, Susie. Having inherited a huge set of property last season, only to discover that it was in fact, an underground weed empire that he almost certainly had to keep up himself, Eddie's now growing in his ambitions.

From the trailer, it looks clear that he's got his eyes on more revenue streams, and the Italian mafia might be the next in his sights. Whether that means a hostile takeover or a partnership is a little hard to gauge from the clips we get in the trailer, but it's obvious that this will involve some luxurious new locations.

Meanwhile, all the old faces from the last season (including the obligatory Ray Winstone and Vinnie Jones) are knocking about looking for violence and muttering dark lines. It looks like great fun, and a bit more ambitious than the already successful first season.

With this calibre of director signed up, and a cast that seems committed to the show, I'd think this would be one of the bigger hits for Netflix at a time when it's arguably starting to refresh its staple of shows. Whether the second season of The Gentlemen can capitalise on that opportunity will become clearer when it comes out on 3 September.

I've been obsessing somewhat over 4K Blu-ray of late. It's all part of bolstering my collection for my '4K Movie Club' – that being one physical media watch per month in 2026 – and I'd already spotted 7 decent Amazon disc-based bargains last month.

I was going through some classic listings today, however, and spotted that Jurassic Park, the 1993 hit – that quite frankly framed my whole view on cinema as a youngster – was re-released just four months ago, in March 2026, as an upgraded 4K Blu-ray disc.

I also spotted something that I never knew existed: in 2013, as part of Jurassic Park's 20th anniversary celebrations, the movie was re-released in 3D on Blu-ray. Yep, seriously. They went and 3Dified Spielberg's classic in a way that, well, pretty much nobody can ever view today anyway!

3D's short life span

The 3D version wasn't 4K resolution, of course, as in 2013 the best you could get was Blu-ray at 1080p Full HD resolution. That said, it was a 4K master scan of the original 35mm film to create the re-release, so there's no degradation in resolution for the sake of stereoscopic viewing.

But you'd need to have the tools to even view it in 3D at home, of course, which has long since died. There was a major boom in the promise of cinema's future in the early 2000s – largely led by Avatar, which I recall was a Panasonic Viera exclusive promotional disc back in 2010 – but it only lasted so long.

Indeed, by 2017 the final 3D TV manufacturers ceased support for the format, withdrawing the necessary hardware for such viewing, and banking on an inevitable 4K future. That, plus HDR (high dynamic range), is where we've arrived today. And I'm so glad that the parties involved made the right decisions.

The rise of streaming

Well, I say that as if the best streaming services haven't taken over and dominated. Which, of course, they have. But I still hold the paradigm view: 4K Blu-ray is far superior for quality, so for major viewing experiences that's where I'll spend the extra cash.

Jurassic Park might be 33 years old now, but it's not as though Hollywood hits were captured using budget camcorders. Indeed, Spielberg's movie was shot using Panavision Panaflex Gold cameras, loaded with 35mm Kodak film. Each frame measures 24 x 36mm and a decent scan can resolve better-than-4K resolution.

Picture is one thing, but sound is another. And the 2026 Blu-ray release adds a new Dolby Atmos mix to Jurassic Park that really ought to elevate this movie classic to a whole other level. I certainly hope so, as I've just added it to my online shopping basket for future viewing – take that, streaming!

If you've spent as many years writing about streaming shows and movies as I have, you'll have started to discern quite obvious patterns in the ways that the best streaming services create new shows. Whether that means strip-mining genres for new stories, or trusting authors to make them fresh shows, there are a bunch of approaches that clearly work.

Prime Video's new show Sterling Point seems to almost be a greatest-hits album for these tactics – it mixes genres up, has a hit author behind it, a beautiful young cast and some big twists to share. Its first trailer has me pretty convinced that it'll also do major numbers when it drops on 5 August.

The show stars Ella Rubin as Annie, a young woman who discovers that her family's history is way more complicated than she assumed. When her grandfather passes away, he leaves Annie and her brother a house in rural Canada, and entreats them to visit it in his will. Annie does so, and discovers a lovely little community, although she can't figure out why her grandfather was up there.

Things become clearer, though, when she discovers another young woman in the cottage – Ramona (Amélie Hoeferle), who claims that she was left the property by her grandfather. They soon realise that they share a mother, but from different fathers, and it looks like that'll almost instantly stir up a lot of distrust and confusion in their families.

That's quite a melodramatic family-oriented plot, but the show clearly also has some steamy romances to offer up, too, with both Ramona and Annie interested in other young people that they meet in Sterling Point (the area that gives the show its name). On top of that, the mysteries about their shared mother clearly won't end with that first big revelation.

It looks like Sterling Point will blend together romance, mystery, drama and even some thriller elements to make a show that could really sink its hooks into people, if I'm any judge of a trailer. It'll be out in around a month's time, so let's set a reminder and see how it does.

It was recently suggested that viewer engagement was dwindling on Netflix, with research showing that subscribers are becoming less willing to watch second seasons of its grandstand shows. Now it seems the streaming service is willing to take extreme measures in response.

The company reportedly has a number of ideas it's mulling over, and almost all of them would see the platform change dramatically.

According to The Wall Street Journal and "people familiar with the matter", Netflix is considering live channels of TV shows and movies from specific genres, which could run 24/7. That would add an area that's more like Pluto TV or, in the UK, the FAST (Free Ad-supported Streaming TV) channels you see on Freely and other streaming boxes.

There's also the possibility it will strike deals with rivals and offer their services through the Netflix app – much like Amazon does in Prime Video. You could therefore pay extra to subscribe to Paramount+ and watch its shows without needing to exit Netflix.

These are big, bold moves for a service that made its name on quality original content, such as Tiger King, Stranger Things, and Squid Game. But then, many of its biggest shows started when competition was less fierce.

There was no Apple TV, no Paramount+, and HBO Max was essentially US only. Even Disney+ is a relative newcomer in comparison.

A new Netflix competitor is on its way

And things are only going to get spicier for Netflix over the coming year. Comcast's Sky has announced an acquisition of ITV in the UK, which will result in a new "streaming giant" for the country.

Its own buyout for Warner Bros. Discovery also failed, after Paramount offered a greatly improved bid and it withdrew. Something needs to change for Netflix to continue in its position as market leader, it seems.

We just wish it was the, frankly ridiculous, price for 4K viewing.

Netflix has a bunch of extremely proven tactics to turn to when it comes to generating big hits for its never-ending audience of streaming converts. From adapting hit novels to reeling in major stars, it seems to know that some moves just tend to work out – and another approach it favours is working with some creators repeatedly.

Tyler Perry is just about as prolific as they come – a writer, actor and director whose personal net worth has placed him in rarefied air (meaning he's a genuine billionaire). That's because he knows his audience inside out, and knows what they want from him – nice, simple stories about family, love and betrayal. That's what Why Did I Get Married Again? seems to offer.

The film stars some staple characters from Perry's universe, since it's a threequel folling on from Why Did I Get Married (2007) and Why Did I Get Married Too? (2010) – so we're seeing the couples from those movies later in their lives, now settled into parenthood and watching their kids go through the relationship trials and tribulations that they know so well.

In fact, two of their kids are getting married to each other, which means there are all sorts of minor and major tensions to work out about who's in charge of what for the wedding, the core partnership itself, and how the older couples all get along with each other as their lives change. It looks like heartwarming stuff, but particularly for those who enjoyed the last two movies years ago.

Honestly, movies in which parents reflect on how they brought their kids up, and in which those kids have moments where they realise how they're like their parents or different from them, are absolutely bankers when it comes to emotional climaxes. Expect catharsis and almost certainly a happy ending – although the trailer makes it obvious there will be some fun twists along the way.

The film's being added to Netflix on 9 September, so it's still a good couple of months away, but that just underlines the fact that Netflix knows this one could be a big hit. It normally reserves this sort of slow build up for its bigger properties, after all.

It was over 18 months ago that I wrote about Apple TV's bold decision with Silo, committing to the show through to its conclusion rather than leaving its viewers hanging.

Now that the show is back on Apple TV, once again asserting its dominance as the best streaming service out there, it's also not giving up its story arc too quickly – because the show airs weekly on Fridays, not in a binge-drop format.

While I still pore over the show's absence on 4K Blu-ray or, indeed, any physical media form, watching the first episode of the third season did look delightful – and I've not upgraded to an Apple TV 4K box, said to provide the peak of quality available.

Critics are in awe of the show, too, with Silo S3 already holding a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score after just one episode has aired – although, I'm sure, said critics will have received a two- or three-episode preview on which to base their assessments.

While I won't put out any major spoilers here, there's one key device that the show installs right from the off: our key protagonist, Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson), has amnesia.

That's not only going to be important for the show's ongoing story arc – and the way Juliette's Silo life intertwines with and, in some ways, echoes that of 'The Before Times' – but it's completely absent in the books on which the show is based.

Silo is based on Hugh Howey's trio of novels – Wool (2011), Shift (2012), and Dust (2013) – and the series has, until now, remained relatively faithful to the original Wool text.

In timeline terms, the third season of the show is in line with the second book, Shift. The show's fourth season has already been shot, however, so whether this shift in Juliette's amnesia progresses into a larger change is yet to be seen.

What is clear, however, is that Apple TV's sci-fi dominance continues. The third season already has me chomping at the bit to see even just episode two – due out Friday 10 July (see the full schedule here)– and watch how the televised series unfolds.

When a new 4K disc of a beloved movie comes out, there's always a bit of a feeding frenzy – as technical reviewers break down every pixel to compare it to past Blu-ray releases and tell you which you should be buying. Some parts of that hype can be a little trying, but broadly I'm a big fan of the boost in interest and viewership that a new transfer can give movies.

Fight Club wasn't a film that I expected to revisit under my own steam particularly soon, I must admit. I love a bit of David Fincher, but some of his movies have a grimness and a grittiness that make a rewatch feel daunting. That's true of Seven, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and it's true of Fight Club.

I'm pretty sure every teenage boy I knew went through a phase of calling this his favourite movie in the mid-2000s, but I never really fell in love with it. I don't particularly like Chuck Palahniuk's novel, on which it's based, and its moral points don't really chime with me. That said, I can't deny that it's a memorable watch, so I was indeed curious to check out its new 4K disc.

I'm a little late to that party after a busy couple of months (and a lot of World Cup action to distract me), but having now been able to sit and watch the film, I'm left slightly more conflicted than I have been with other 4K discs I've checked out. If you look it up on YouTube, you'll quickly find troves of videos showing that Fincher's taken a bit of a tinkering approach to this re-release, with some colour changes and even effects tweaks that have largely attracted criticism.

I didn't know about those until after watching the movie, which I think is the right order in which to approach things, but I will allow that I noticed some parts myself. In particular, it's striking that some of the grimy contrast of the movie seems to have been smoothed away with its new colour treatment.

Some scenes that had deep shadows and texture are now a little flatter and more uniform to look at, with upsides and downsides. In some cases, this means you can see more detail, whether in facial expressions or costuming. Sometimes the very same cases, though, also mean that the character of the film feels like it's been drained away slightly.

It's an interesting situation, and it feels fairly predictable given Fincher's reputation for perfectionism and borderline control-freakery on his sets. That he would take that approach to a re-release shouldn't necessarily surprise us.

Still, if there's some hubbub about whether these tweaks improve the film or not, I think I'm happy to pin my flag to the fact that the 4K disc does look and sound phenomenal if you (like me) haven't watched the movie in years and therefore don't have a precise memory of some of those details.

Its sound mix is brilliant, and the sheer resolution and detail on show is really a great advert for what makes a 4K disc so special. Mega-fans might find issue, but it's worth remembering that this is a movie that has long divided audiences and critics regardless (as proven by its Rotten Tomatoes scores, among other metrics).

So, in some ways, it actually feels quite on the nose that its 4K transfer should generate this much conversation – it's a film that aimed to provoke right from the start, after all.

When Netflix first showed off a teaser trailer for its new smash-hit of a show, I Will Find You, I immediately had a good sense that it would do well. As I wrote at the time, Netflix has (along with some of the other best streaming services out there) figured out a pretty reliable formula to develop really solid shows that people want to watch.

That formula? Enlist best-selling thriller authors, and either adapt their existing work, or get them to pen new plots full of twists and turns. After all, there's no one quite like an etablished author to tell you how to make sure that a story keeps audiences gripped from start to finish.

In the case of I Will Find You, that author is Harlan Coben, who had already worked on a healthy grab bag of shows and movies for Netflix, and who is quietly but clearly one of its biggest assets right now. The show stars Sam Worthington, a longtime and very reliable star, but also Britt Lower, who shot to fame thanks to her big role in Severance on Apple TV.

Worthington plays a tortured father who finds himself in prison, convicted of the murder of his own son, but knowing full well that he never did any such thing. It's tearing him up inside, but everything starts to clarify when Lower's character visits him in jail.

She seems to have found proof that he didn't kill his son. It's not that she can show someone else committing the crime, but rather that she's found evidence that his son never died in the first place. If he's still out in the world, then it was actually a kidnapping, which changes everything.

I haven't watched the show yet, so I can't comment on its pacing or how that mystery unfolds, but it's clearly chiming with audiences, since it absolutely shot to the top of Netflix's in-house charts on release. Now, the streamer has confirmed that it's the biggest series launch of the year, having accumulated a massive 24 million views in just its first four days.

Those are numbers that even giants like HBO would probably dream of for the latest round of House of the Dragon, and it underlines the fact that when Netflix hits big, its scale is hard to match. The good news is that the show is out in its entirety, with no weekly schedule to stick to, so you can check it out now if this all has piqued your interest.

Another week, another heatwave – here in the UK temperatures are creeping up into certifiably uncomfortable position once more, which means it's still the time of year when you want to close the curtains all day to keep cool air inside, and watch some streaming in the evenings to keep your mind off the heat.

If you're a Netflix or Prime Video subscriber, then you probably already know that you have access to some of the biggest streaming libraries on the market, but they're always getting bigger. I've checked out the full list of everything being added to each this week, and have chosen three highlights for you to know about. Check them out below.

Little House on the Prairie

• Streaming on: Netflix from 9 July

This one's been getting trailers and teasers for weeks now, because Netflix likely hopes that it'll be a genuine smash-hit in the US, where it's one of those cultural touchstones that almost every child reads. This long-running series of books is getting a bigger-budget adaptation than the last time it was turned into TV, and if it runs for half as many seasons, Netflix will be over the moon.

Its story of a resilient, loving family moving across America at a time of real possibility but also real and present danger in the wilderness is a classic. It's going to be particularly fascinating to see how it approaches some more dated elements now that it's 2026, but it's almost guaranteed to be warm and wholesome in the extreme.

Jeff Arcuri: Nice to Meet You

• Streaming on: Netflix from 7 July

Jeff Arcuri is one of those algorithmic wizards – he's gone from a fairly small name in the comedy circuit to a big star thanks to a nearly never-ending succession of viral clips on Reddit and YouTube. His speciality is crowd work, and this entire Netflix special seems to be geared around audience interaction as a result.

He'll light-heartedly find out about some of the oddest characters in his audience, underlining the fact that basically all of us are at least a little weird when we think about it. Expect belly laughs and quick improvised ad-libs, plus a healthy dose of confessional material when the special drops midweek.

The Ghost in the Shell Season 1

• Streaming on: Prime Video from 7 July

One of the most iconic manga ever, and one of the most beloved anime adaptations, is getting a new lick of paint – The Ghost in the Shell is a brand new adaptation of one of the definitive works of cyberpunk sci-fi. It's a show rather than a movie, this time, and is apparently hewing even more faithfully to the material in the source manga than previous versions.

That'll delight fans, but it's sure to entice some new viewers with a funky and neon-soaked visual aesthetic that really looks extremely entertaining. Whether it can make its complicated plots about corporations and spying a little more intelligible will be interesting to see, too. We'll know more this week, as it's now super imminent.

Netflix has a pretty good modern history of spotlighting new series and movies from Korean creators, with Squid Game still standing out as one of its biggest launches ever, becoming one of its most iconic shows and gaining global popularity. So, when it puts a heap of budget behind a new Korean drama series, it's worth paying attention.

This month Netflix launches The East Palace, a new supernatural action thriller that looks like it has a heck of a lot going for it, including some pretty amazing-looking fight sequences, and it's finally got a proper trailer. We'd already really enjoyed the teaser, so it's great to get a longer look at the series.

The East Palace will star Nam Joo-hyuk as a demon-hunter who has the power to enter the spirit world to hunt down malevolent demons – which should clue you in fairly immediately to the fact that this is a proper supernatural series. He's drafted in by the local king to investigate the mysterious east wing of his palace, which seems to be housing all sorts of funky evil beasties.

He also finds an ally in the form of the king's daughter, who has the mysterious power to be able to perceive and indeed communicate with ghosts and demons herself, which makes her a highly useful person to know. Together, they'll have to unravel just why the demon world is targeting the palace and its residents.

While that plot sounds like good fun, it's the visuals that really capture the attention in this case – the show looks pretty gorgeous, with a really distinctive flair that looks nice and stylised. We see glimpses of what are likely to be quite lavish action sequences set in the gloaming of the spirit world, which could be massively entertaining.

It's also clear that the show will have some horror elements, which shouldn't surprise given its subject matter. That could see it enter as a really compelling new take on a few different genres, so be sure to keep an eye out for it when it launches on 17 July.

Netflix has quietly become quite a talent factory here in the UK, specialising in finding young British actors and propelling them to massive fame when they star in shows and movies that go viral or climb the charts. While he wasn't the main star of Netflix's Sex Education, it's clear that Conor Swindell is using that show as a springboard.

Now he's fronting up another series for Netflix, and like Sex Education it's got a very British flavour to it, but with a much darker story. This is The Bombing of Pan Am 103, a retelling of the harrowing Lockerbie bombing, taking in the story from multiple perspectives, including Swindell's on the ground as what seems to be a local policeman.

The first trailer for the show came out this week, and revealed that it'll drop on Netflix this month, on 30 July – which is a bit of a surprise. Given the talent in the cast, I'd have thought Netflix would give this a little more publicity and hype-building time. As well as Swindell the show will have Patrick J. Adams, Merritt Wever, Eddie Marsan and more, so it's clearly quite a big project.

Those cast members will help to give the series an international flavour, as we see not just what it was like to be in Lockerbie during the crash and its aftermath, but also how the American authorities swung into action to investigate how such a disaster could have happened, and to chase down those it suspected were responsible for what was ultimately proven to be a bombing.

Famously one of the widest murder investigations ever, the police and crime scene work that went into working out how Lockerbie happened is well worth a retelling, although this is also something that's still relatively fresh in the memories of many living Brits. It'll be fascinating to see how historically accurate the show stays, and the trailer makes it look like that accuracy will be a priority.

For it to be unveiled like this with just a month before releasing would have been a bad sign in the days of traditional cinema releases, but it's harder to know what to expect in the streaming era. It's perfectly possible that this one could be a sleeper hit, with a compelling story to tell and the lure of a trans-Atlantic tone.

Never a month goes by without some big ructions in the world of big streaming, but regardless of what plans the likes of Prime Video and Netflix are making in the background, they know they have to keep pumping out new content or risk losing subscribers. That means each month brings a tide of new shows and movies to watch – and July 2026 is no exception!

I've taken the time to go through everything coming to Prime Video this month, to pick out five new original additions that I think could be worth watching. You'll find those listed below, with trailers and the day they'll release, so that you can start to get a sense of what your month might look like.

Elle

• Streaming from: 1 July

This one's been highly anticipated, and a long time coming – a prequel series to the beloved movie Legally Blonde, starring Lexi Minetree, who looks almost improbably similar to a young Reece Witherspoon. She's playing the title role of Elle, but with the clock rewound so that she's still at high school in LA.

Her life gets turned upside down when she's told by her parents that they're moving to Seattle, though, leaving behind sun-bleached California for the rainy Pacific Northwest. She's going to have to completely readjust how she presents herself to fit in – or is she? This looks like a fun story of staying true to yourself and discovering just what it is that you're passionate about.

Ride or Die

• Streaming from: 15 July

The biggest and best streaming services all seem to have a fascination with spies and assassins living regular lives, and this looks like another fun take on that mini-genre. It stars Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer as two best friends who've known each other for a couple of decades.

What Spencer's character doesn't realise is that her mate happens to be an international assassin, something that comes tumbling out when they're attacked one evening. From there, we can expect some fun action scenes balanced against comedy, a classic genre mashup that will most likely ensure this is a popular new movie for Prime Video.

Murder 101

• Streaming from: 13 July

I have mixed feelings about true crime as a genre, but this documentary series looks like it might have a really interesting approach to the topic. It takes as its focus an inventive teacher at a Tennessee high school who's been using his sociology class as an opportunity to get teens helping with cold cases.

As much as the series charts the discoveries that a series of these classes makes in some shocking cases, it's also about how disconnected we can feel from tragedies, and how this sort of interesting teaching approach can help students find a spark in themselves. It's a three-part series and could be really valuable when it arrives in mid-July.

Young Farts Trailer Parts

• Streaming from: 17 July

Another reality series, this one takes a much more light-hearted approach, taking us into the lives of some happy-go-lucky mechanics who are frankly larger than life. The Young Farts part shop is full of interesting characters that we'll clearly get to learn more about as we watch, and as they come up with new harebrained schemes.

It seems pretty clear that caravans and trailers are under huge threat in the series, too, since the trailer sees some get their doors blown off, others being dropped from great heights, and various other indignities being inflicted. It's a fun-looking little series that might just build up a cult following.

Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2

• Streaming from: 31 July

My final pick is an animated one and could be a great hit if you have kids who're into DC superheroes, because it's the return of the best in that whole roster – Batman. After a great first season, Caped Crusader returns for more prettily animated stories about just how he's going to semi-violently destroy the criminal underbelly of Gotham.

The first season was a really pleasant surprise, with a more vintage, golden-age setting that pulls back on some of the techiness that Batman can rely on. Instead, it's all about biffing people on the head and socking them in the jaw, the good old-fashioned way. We'll get another ten episodes right at the end of July, a boon for any Batman fans.

I'll be interested to see if the news that Sony won't make disc-based physical releases for its consoles starting in January 2026 makes a proper ripple in the home cinema world, but it really should. The more I've thought about this announcement from PlayStation, the more despair I feel, and I don't think it'll just be games that are affected in the long run.

I've written a lot in the past year about how much I've enjoyed getting into physical media, starting up a modest but decent collection of movies both in standard Blu-ray and 4K formats. While I now use the brilliant Panasonic DP-UB820 and love it, for a long while I relied entirely on my PlayStation 5 to play 4K discs.

To be more precise, I used my PS5 before I upgraded to the PS5 Pro, at which point I had to fork out more money for the optional extra disc drive, since the PS5 Pro is digital-only. That already made it clear that using a disc on a PlayStation wouldn't be accessible forever, but I didn't expect it to happen so soon.

The key point I'm trying to make here is that we know the market for 4K Blu-ray players is really small – it's been that way for years, and the number of brands making players has shrunk over time.

Now, given that we can be extremely confident the PlayStation 6 won't have a disc drive (because why on earth would it?), it's highly likely that the one remaining mainstream way of being able to play 4K discs (the console under your TV) will also disappear.

Someone who didn't necessarily have a big collection of discs, but had some old favourites and could be tempted by a big new release on 4K, will soon quite probably have no hardware to actually watch a disc – unless they keep hold of their PS5 or Xbox Series X.

Given that the PS6 is likely to cost a genuine bomb, though, this might mean missing out on a decent trade-in fee for the older console, a luxury that only some will be able to afford.

It all means that an already niche market for physical cinema and TV releases might well shrink even further, and that's a terrible thing in my eyes. I've had some of the best home viewing experiences of my life in recent months thanks to proper physical releases from outlets like The Criterion Collection, replete with extras and featurettes to enrich a viewing.

In a world with fewer actual disc players, the idea that we'll still see the same number of disc releases feels pretty optimistic to me, and while we've seen revivals for formats like vinyl and cassettes in the music world, there aren't the same green shoots yet in movies.

Only this week, PlayStation users found a huge list of movies being deleted from their libraries after supposedly having been purchased, so it's not like the digital question is only for gamers. So, while it might seem unfair to say that PlayStation isn't just killing physical games with this decision, but also killing physical movies, there's certainly an argument to be made there.

Put it this way – I'd buy a Panasonic player sooner rather than later. They might get discontinued at some point, and then you'll be up the creek with just a PS6 and no disc drive to help.

As we roll into July there's a new Netflix movie that's topped the streaming service's chart – and it's arguably the biggest John Cena comedy under the streamer's belt yet.

Little Brother debuted 26 June on Netflix, which is also the distribution company – so you won't find this flick anywhere else for the time being.

Cena's career has gone stratospheric in recent years, with Amazon having picked him up for 2024's Jackpot! and Ricky Stanicky. But now Netflix is here to bring the former WWE star's talents to its platform.

What's Little Brother about?

Cena stars as Rudd Landy, a real estate agent who is greatly successful. His world looks to be turned upside down when there's news of his "brother" having an accident.

But it's not turned upside down in a tugging-at-the-heartstrings kind of way, as Little Brother reveals Marcus Pinchel (played by Eric André), who once took part in a schooltime 'Big Brother-Little Brother' programme. But there's no blood relation.

As the trailer above reveals, things quickly descend into total chaos, as Pinchel turns out to be far more than Landy had bargained for. Even if his wife, Deirdre (Michelle Monaghan), doesn't seem to think so.

How highly rated is Little Brother?

Cena might well be a big star demanding a big budget from a big streaming service such as Netflix, but that hasn't helped it to land a big score by any means.

Indeed, Little Brother has a meagre 46% on Rotten Tomatoes – and that's only dropped lower day by day since the movie first became available to stream.

But it's all down to what you expect – and viewers are divided. While some are "Shocked that John Cena actually took this role", others found it "hilarious", quipping that people need to "lighten up".

Don't expect any real head-scratching depth, therefore, just some zany comedy – and some inevitable barrel scraping – that's not going to sit well with everyone. The R rating is a big clue to that effect.

That's not to say the movie's writers, Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel, aren't known for classics. The former has Jim Carrey epics Yes Man and Liar Liar under his belt. But, hey, things were different in the 90s and 2000s, eh?

As a new month starts, it's tradition here at T3 to take a look at what's coming down the pike from the biggest and best streaming services on the market, so that people can get a sense of what they can look forward to. We're just on the very cusp of July right now, and if you're a Netflix subscriber, you're in the right place.

I've taken a deep look at everything coming to Netflix in July, from new TV series to original movies, and I've limited my picks below to Netflix Originals. That helps to ensure that you'll get access to them regardless of what country you're watching in. Read on to find out five of the best coming your way.

Little House on the Prairie

• Streaming from: 9 July

First up is a Netflix revival of a genuine classic of children's literature in America, one that tells part of the foundation myth of the whole country, frankly. Little House on the Prairie tells a story of American migration, and the challenges that faced families who uprooted their lives in the hopes of finding prosperity.

From the trailers we've seen so far, it might also approach that myth with a little more context and compassion than some other historical versions of it, emphasising the place of native people rather than erasing them or making light. Still, this should be wholesome family-friendly fare, and possibly a very relaxing and cosy watch, if it's anything like previous long-running versions of the story.

Enola Holmes 3

• Streaming from: 1 July

This one might already be available to watch by the time you check out this list, frankly. Enola Holmes has fairly quietly become a bankable franchise for Netflix, after two previous movies did big numbers with Millie Bobby Brown in the lead and titular role as Sherlock Holmes' younger sister.

She's back again this time, and planning an intimate wedding in Malta, only to have her plans upended when her older brother is mysteriously kidnapped. Rightly sensing that it might take a formidable foe to get the drop on such an intelligent mind, Enola will swing into action and take things into her own hands as she tries to put things right and get married in peace.

The Hawk

• Streaming from: 16 July

This looks like a pretty bold swing from Netflix, bringing in the iconic Will Ferrell to front a comedy series in the hopes of boosting its own credentials in that genre. It looks a bit like the Anchorman approach, but taking on professional golf instead of newscasting. Ferrell plays Lonnie 'The Hawk' Hawkins, an ageing ex-pro who's become something of a joke.

He still has major ambitions, though, despite having been arguably replaced by his own son on the pro circuit. Lonnie has a long way to go before he can compete at that level again, though, so expect funny training montages and plenty of on-course action as he makes his way back to the top of the game.

Heartstopper Forever

• Streaming from: 17 July

Another long-running Netflix series gets a send-off here, with Heartstopper upgrading from a final season to a movie, to see its characters off into the sunset. That said, the big question is whether they'll do so happily in love, or after a heartbreaking break-up. Some fans will be sad they're only getting a couple of hours more, though.

Still, it looks like a pretty brilliant continuation of what came before, with Nick and Charlie reckoning with how their relationship is going to work as one of them goes to university and the other doesn't. Those are classic questions, and there's every chance they're treated sensitively here – pray for a happy ending, people!

72 Hours

• Streaming from: 24 July

Sometimes a broad comedy that's over and done in two hours is just what you want on a hot July day, and that's what you'll be getting from 72 Hours, which looks about as mainstream as you could like. It stars Kevin Hart in a fairly preposterous story. He's a middle-aged professional who gets added to a chat about a bachelor party by accident.

He decides to go for the hell of it and winds up spending a crazy weekend with men half his age, trying to recapture his youth and keep up with their antics. Things escalate even further beyond that, from the look of things, but the real question is whether the jokes are any good. We'll know more by the end of the month.

The world of streaming never, ever sits still – and there's plenty coming down the pike as we leave June and enter the month of July. This week we've finally had the UK heatwave abate, which means it might be more straightforward to stay inside of an evening and watch some fun new shows and movies without melting.

On that note, I've taken a look at all of the new additions coming to Netflix and Prime Video this week, since they're the two biggest streaming services out there, and picked out three highlights that I think will interest people. There's a really broad set of genres to enjoy this week, so check them out below with trailers and details on which day they'll arrive.

Elle

• Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video from 1 July

This charming prequel series takes a look at Elle, the star of Legally Blonde, but winds the clock back to her high school days for a different era. Reece Witherspoon has been replaced with Lexi Minetree, who frankly looks almost impossibly like a young Witherspoon, and the whole show is unsurprisingly going to open with explosions of pink colour.

Things will get more drab when Elle is forced to move to Seattle, though, where she finds it much harder to fit in and make friends. With a savvy mind and an eye for detail, though, it looks like helping to uncover a local legal scandal might just be the making of her reputation – and it could put her on a new course in life.

Enola Holmes 3

• Streaming on: 1 July on Netflix

Enola Holmes has quietly become one of Netflix's biggest franchises, after two movies that clearly did really quite massive numbers for the streaming service. It's now got another sequel coming out, starring Millie Bobby Brown again as Sherlock Holmes' younger sister Enola.

This time around she's trying to organise her wedding in Malta, of all places, but gets severely distracted when Sherlock is kidnapped. For someone to get one over the most intelligent detective in the world, something must have really gone wrong, and it'll be up to Enola to put things together and work out what's happened and how she can put things right.

Human Vapor

• Streaming on: Netflix from 2 July

My final pick is a niche one, but I think it looks really promising and might have the potential to break out and become a cult hit. This Japanese series will follow a bizarre, possibly supernatural series of killings that starts when an expert turns into gas live on TV, rightly terrifying people.

As detectives rush to work out how something so seemingly impossible could have happened in front of so many people, they start to uncover evidence of twisted schemes and abandoned projects. It looks really dark and fun, and the special effects as people die seem fascinatingly impressive, so don't be surprised if this one does better than you might expect.

Sony has informed many customers that 100s of digital movies they've purchased will soon be deleted from their libraries.

PlayStation owners will lose access to over 500 movies from Studio Canal, after the expiration of content licensing agreements between the studio and Sony. There's a list of all the films that will be removed on the PlayStation website, but it includes the likes of the original Rambo trilogy, the Paddington movies, and The Evil Dead.

The cull list also includes many TV series, such as multiple seasons of Gomorra and The Young Pope.

They will be removed from users' libraries on 1 September 2026 (via VGC), and there doesn't seem to be a backup system or library swap service (to move your purchase rights to another platform).

Time to collect 4K Blu-rays?

Although this is just one storefront and one studio, the example it sets is clear. When you purchase a movie on a streaming platform you more often than not don't own it. You are simply purchasing the right to play it as often as you like, as long as it remains on that service.

But if, as in this case, the rights expire, you are left with nothing.

This is an argument Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray and even DVD collectors have been making for years. While streaming is more convenient, the only way to ensure you own a copy of a movie is to have a physical version (and the player to spin it on).

Picture and sound performance is an obvious benefit, with higher bitrates afforded by 4K Blu-ray discs, but even they pale into insignificance to a movie being deleted from your collection by a third-party.

It's why I retain my physical disc collection personally, even though it takes up a considerable amount of space. At least I can watch Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 4K whenever I fancy, rather than find it has simply disappeared when I next get the urge.

The pressure to deliver a good comedy movie if you were involved with a previous classic must be quite something. Ben Stiller knows that better than most – he was the face of some iconic comedies in the 1990s and 2000s, but now is generally associated with more serious fare like Severance. His new movie for Apple TV, though, suggests that he's going back to the old ways, at least temporarily.

The Dink stars Jake Johnson of New Girl fame (or, at least, that's where I know and love him from), in a sports-themed comedy movie that not only calls Dodgeball to mind, but in fact deliberately invokes that genre classic in its trailer. The film will hit Apple TV on 24 July, making it a potential summer crowd-pleaser.

To be honest, the trailer actually makes the movie look like the sort of thing that Netflix normally pumps out – low-quality fare that nonetheless will do big numbers because people undeniably do love an easy watch on a summer evening. That might be me doing it a disservice, though, and Stiller has clearly shown that he can create a properly interesting project.

He's producing the movie this time, but he also cameos in the trailer. He's a doctor who tells Johnson's character Dusty, a past-his-prime tennis semi-pro, that the best way to rehabilitate an injured wrist is to swap to pickleball. Dusty just so happens to despise the sport as a bastardised version of tennis for the old and weak, but perhaps being forced to play it could change his mind?

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to estimate how the movie might unfold from this premise, with Dusty coming to grudgingly love the pickleball community he's been vilifying for so long, before realising that he could be a way bigger star in this nascent sport than he ever was in tennis. Sprinkled along the way are some other fun cameos, not least from Andy Roddick – and Ed Harris seems to have been roped in as a fuddy-duddy tennis defender.

The Dink looks like a movie that might divide audiences. If you know ahead of time that it's not shooting for the moon, it could end up being a really fun and self-contained little oasis of amusement during what'll probably be a hot and sticky late July. If you don't, then it might disappoint – but we'll get a better sense of that risk when it comes out in around a month's time.

It's always fun when one of the biggest and best streaming services on the market makes a proper splash by adding a massive release, fresh from cinemas. That's absolutely the level of hype appropriate for the film that Disney+ just announced it'll be adding on 29 July, a day before it's even available to digitally rent or buy: The Devil Wears Prada 2.

The sequel that we didn't even really realise people wanted came to cinemas earlier this year, and scored some pretty impressive box office numbers – scoring some $677 million dollars, according to some reports. That made it a huge success, which means it's even better news that Disney is adding it for free.

Crucially, I think most fans would agree, The Devil Wears Prada 2 managed to thread the needle by reuniting all of the most important members of the original cast. That means, of course, Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, but also the all-important supporting members, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt. They're all here and seem to be having the best time of their lives.

Once again, the movie sees Hathaway playing Andy Sachs, and once again it opens with her coming to fictional magazine Runway with a new job. This time she's returning to the fold to be the new Features Editor, and she's looking to make a splash without (hopefully) annoying her old boss Miranda (Streep).

The print media not exactly having the best time (I wouldn't know a thing about that, of course), the movie circles around the idea of how Andy can help Runway retain its position as an icon of the magazine world. It's a fun little concept, but the real joy is, like in the first movie, all in the interactions between Miranda and the whole rest of the world.

Streep is basically chewing the scenery here, in the best way, and Emily Blunt outdoes herself, too – they get to have all the fun. If you loved the first movie, this is an automatic must-watch, as far as I'm concerned, so you either need to get Disney+ or check that your subscription will still be active in late July.

It's a busy week in the wider world right now, and if you're anything like me you're getting bombarded with Prime Day deals and World Cup hype – but you might fancy a break from either or both of those things before too long. After all, it's possible to get a little carried away with the need to buy things from Amazon, and it's definitely easy to make bad decisions where early-hours World Cup kickoffs are concerned.

Because of how much airtime the World Cup has rightly been sucking up recently, I think the return of House of the Dragon has been a little under-hyped, to be honest, although a second season that kept plates spinning without much decisive action might have played a part there, too.

It is back, though, and however you access your HBO shows, you should now be able to watch the first episode, and I really recommend that you do! It's a big one, with a major battle unfolding at sea, and most of the main characters being given something to do.

Frankly, I'd also recommend that you follow in my footsteps and watch HBO's own recap of the first two seasons, too, because they're labyrinthine in retrospect. The fact that it's 15 minutes long on its own is a good indication of how much ground it covers, too.

I'm going to avoid spoiling anything about the opening episode of the third season, obviously, but I think it showcases what's great about the series (as well as some of its limitations). Principally, it's operating on a grand scale in the fantasy genre when few rivals are willing to commit to similar ambitions.

There are so many characters, and so many locations, and all of them look pretty sumptuous – with a high-budget sheen that you can basically see in every scene. It also has a continued and brutal willingness to kill off characters that really is refreshing, even if those plot points come from the source material.

That said, the show also suffers from some of the plotting conveniences that plagued the last few seasons of Game of Thrones, with characters thwarted in unsatisfying ways or by issues that should be minor (like locked doors, in this case), and I'm hoping the rest of the season is a little more decisive on that front.

We'll know over the coming weeks, as the season continues to air on a Sunday evening in the US, making Monday evening the night to watch it here in the UK. I'm doing so through Now, using an Entertainment pass, but with HBO Max now on our shores you've got options for how to access it.

Heatwave or no heatwave (and here in the UK, it's outrageously warm), the streaming wars continue without any let-up. In fact, those people lucky or farsighted enough to already have an air conditioner or cooling fan set up in their home will probably be looking for more streaming content than usual, as they cower inside to avoid the heat outside.

Well, if that sounds like it might describe how you're planning to spend your weekdays over the next few days, then you might, in turn, be wondering what's being added to the likes of Netflix and Prime Video this week. I've scoured through each listing to pick out three highlights getting added this week, so that you know what you can binge if you need to.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2

• Streaming on: Netflix from 25 June

One of Netflix's very biggest shows is back this week, with a run of new episodes that almost certainly cost tens of millions to make, but at least do look likely to be impressively gorgeous and grand in scale. Following Aang and his friends as their adventures around the different kingdoms continue, it looks like we'll get more action and element-bending CGI than before.

That's good, too, because it's been a long wait for a new season, in a way that arguably has undermined the momentum of the show a little. That's a problem that's slightly plaguing Netflix at the moment, but it hopefully shouldn't change the fact that we've got a really enticing season to watch here.

Little Brother

• Streaming on: Netflix from 26 June

For those looking for more of a one-off to help them unwind one evening, Netflix has another big addition, a new comedy starring John Cena as part of his continuing renaissance as an actor. He's always been game to try fun material, and that looks like a great way to describe Little Brother. In the movie, he plays a guy with a successful family life who finds things going very wrong when a connection from high school returns.

That connection is played by chaotic comedian Eric Andre, a performer so unpredictable that there will almost certainly be some jaw-dropping moments in the movie. Whether he's allowed to be truly profane could be a big determining factor in the film's success, frankly. We'll know more when it drops on Friday.

See You At Work Tomorrow!

• Streaming on: Prime Video from 22 June

There's no two ways around it – Prime Video is having one of its leaner weeks this week, especially by comparison with Netflix, but that doesn't mean it has nothing to offer. Korean dramas and comedies have quietly become global cult sensations in recent years, and Prime Video is adding a new series called See You At Work Tomorrow! .

It's about the complicated dynamics of workplace demands and the search for love, and it seems to have its focus on a few different potential couples as they work out whether they could possibly be something together. This could be a really charming little show to distract you from the heat, so give it a look if you're in the mood for some lighter fare from today onwards.

The scale of the streaming industry now means that it can be quite hard to keep a grip on what franchises are doing huge numbers without you even realising it. That's a label I would use for Outer Banks, a show that Netflix has turned into a cult, but one that I've never dipped my toe into. Now it's getting a fifth and final season and fans seem to be rabidly excited.

The trailer dropped earlier this week, and gives us a look at the surviving members of the central cast as they try to reckon with a major event at the end of last season. It confirms again that this is the end of the road for them, but makes it clear that we can expect some fairly explosive action as things come to a head.

For the uninitiated, Outer Banks started as a sort of modern take on The Goonies, starring improbably beautiful teenagers in North Carolina who hear tales of a legendary treasure that's eluded searchers for generations. Now, seasons later, that treasure has been found and lost, confiscated and stolen, and the central feuds between two young groups of treasure hunters has deepened with time.

Just as important, though, is the fact that local law enforcement has become an enemy to our main characters, with some corruption and seediness seeping into things. Now that the original treasure arc is largely resolved, this season should be more about getting our characters the send-off their fans want.

That said, plenty of fans out there think the show might have been best served by ending after Season 3, when that original arc was basically wrapped up, so this season has a challenge on its hands. It has to justify the show continuing a little longer, while also being entertaining enough to be more than just an extended finale.

We'll know whether it meets that brief when it drops on 20 August, in a couple of months' time, but even if it's a damp squib you can still expect it to do some huge numbers in Netflix's charts. After all, the huge streamer doesn't renew shows out of sentimentality – this one has a major fanbase to rely on.

I love a good genre mashup; whether a show is one half sci-fi and another half whodunnit, or horror inflected with comedy, it's always really fun to see material that doesn't just stick to one lane. In the streaming era, I'd argue that some of the biggest platforms (like Netflix) are starting to realise that these blends can work really well for audiences, too.

That would explain some of the logic behind its new show The East Palace, a Korean drama that does things quite differently. At points in its debut trailer you could think that it's going to be a traditional prestige historical drama, but as things go further you'll start to see that it's got heavy dashes of fantasy too, and a little horror to spice things up.

Set in a fictional but deliberately credible historical era, the show will star Nam Joo-hyuk as Gu-cheon, a ghost-slayer. His unique power is that he can in fact transform into a ghost himself (and it's him you'll see with a cluster of swords on his back in the trailer's latter stages) in order to slay demons and ghosts, before returning to his corporeal form.

He'll apparently be teaming up with a courtly lady, Roh Yoon-seo as Saeng-gang, who can hear the dead and indeed communicate with them, making her a very useful asset to him. They're going to be hired to investigate paranormal situations and hauntings associated with the titular East Palace, to try to figure out what on earth's causing so much trouble there.

Beyond that (much of which is from the show's blurb), the trailer is actually fairly ambiguous – we don't really get a look at a main antagonist, for example, which doubtless will exist when it's available to stream on 17 July, in a month's time.

Regardless, though, it looks really sumptuous and has oodles of visual character to boast about, including some CGI sequences that look absolutely draw dropping from the glimpses we see in tightly-edited sequences. Whether the show can live up to the promise this trailer gives off, we'll find out in due course.

When HBO announces a new show, you sit up and pay attention, and that rule frankly applies regardless of genre. As it happens, when Larry David announces a new comedy project, a very similar logic should be applied, which makes for quite a double whammy when it comes to Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness.

David famously ended his long-running show Curb Your Enthusiasm a couple of years back, but the industry rumour always seemed to be that he'd be back before too long – as had happened before a few times. Now that's come true, but his new show does look pretty different, as confirmed by its first trailer.

This is more of a sketch comedy approach, as opposed to a painfully awkward scripted series, and it sees David skipping through history examining what it might be like if his famously curmudgeonly characteristics were dropped into some of the most important and consequential moments in the long past of the USA.

That's a funny concept, and it's made funnier by the fact that the show is from the production company founded by the actual Obamas – in some ways the whole thing might be an implicit middle finger to the current presidential administration. Either way, the trailer makes it clear that we'll get a look at plenty of different time periods through the show's seven episode run.

There are looks at World War I and the experience of US troops in the trenches; the American Revolution; the invention of flight; and even peasant existence long before that – all with David mugging his way through scenes as a suspiciously modern-minded grouch. The joy, of course, will be in seeing how his grumpiness changes the vibes of scenes we know so well from other movies and show.

Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness will hit HBO Max on 26 June, so it's around a week away at this stage – if you're a comedy fan or a closet history nut then this is likely to be a real treat.

Millions of Disney+ subscribers have once again lost access to Dolby Vision, even when paying for Premium membership.

Disney has had to remove the HDR option from its streaming service after losing a patent case filed by US firm InterDigital. It affects 11 countries across Europe.

In February, we reported that both Dolby Vision and 3D streaming options were removed from Disney+ across EU member states. At the time, Disney said that they were unavailable due to "technical challenges".

It became apparent that the enhanced picture services were suspended due to a dispute with InterDigital, which claimed the technology used by Disney impinged on its patents. An injunction had been imposed by a German court.

However, it seemed Disney found a workaround and Dolby Vision was restored in countries outside of Germany itself. Now that is no longer the case.

According to InterDigital (via FlatpanelsHD), a new injunction has been imposed by the Unified Patent Court. This covers several countries in the EU (not the UK): "The Mannheim Local Division of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) ruled that InterDigital is entitled to an injunction over Disney's infringement of an InterDigital patent covering certain video encoding techniques related to HEVC and confirmed the validity of this patent," it said.

"The UPC is a pan-European patent court which issues decisions that apply across multiple countries in the European Union (EU); here, the injunction against Disney spans 11 EU countries."

Disney has responded with confirmation: "As a result of litigation before a European patent court, we have been required to make changes to the availability of Dolby Vision and 3D in Denmark and several neighbouring countries," it said.

"We are disappointed that we have had to do this, and we share our customers' frustration."

It has also been revealed by FlatpanelsHD that Amazon Prime Video, which uses similar streaming technology, has brokered a deal with InterDigital so that it can continue to offer Dolby Vision to subscribers.

Netflix, like many of the best streaming services apart from it, has been slowly but surely building up quite a repertoire when it comes to steamy romance dramas. It figured out quite a few years ago that audiences absolutely love a bit of relationship drama, and it's built out more than one mega-franchise from that genre. One of the first big hits for its efforts was Heartstopper.

This very British story about coming of age and coming out in the UK while at school became a huge fan favourite and ran for three seasons before Netflix decided that the best way to send it off wasn't a fourth season. Instead, we're getting a finale film, and it just got its first trailer ahead of arriving on 17 July.

Heartstopper Forever will pick up the story of Nick and Charlie as they head into a genuinely pivotal part of their lives, at the end of school. They're deciding what's next for them individually and as a unit, with Nick making ready to go to university and Charlie finding himself more and more as his introversion falls away.

As anyone who had a teenage relationship will know, though, these sorts of thresholds in life tend to bring a huge amount of angst and worry with them – and that looks to be guaranteed from the trailer. Nick's clearly feeling all sorts of anxiety about what his life looks like without Charlie right there by his side, and Charlie in turn is worried about their codependency.

Of course, that all sounds a bit worrying and negative, but I have a pretty good feeling that Heartstopper won't take the route of a super sad ending. Worst case we might get a relationship break while Nick sorts himself out an uni, but I reckon we get a rosier outcome for this pair. Netflix knows just as well as the original author of the graphic novels that the show's based on that people don't really want super depressing endings, after all.

If you're a huge fan of the series, you'll want to circle 17 July in your diary or get a calendar reminder in there – it's likely to be a big day for the romance genre on streaming.

I've never held back from heaping praise on Apple TV's commissioning team over the last few years because of the way it's consistently taken fun bets on interesting new sci-fi ideas, so it's only fair that Netflix gets a proper nod for unveiling an equally intriguing project. It's just trailed The Last House, which looks like a fascinating blend of sci-fi and horror elements.

The original movie will star Wagner Moura (fresh from an Oscar nomination for The Secret Agent) opposite Greta Lee, as a pair of parents whose life is upended when they discover they can't leave their home one morning. From the looks of the first trailer, though, it's not that they're under house arrest – something far more sinister is actually unfolding.

In fact, it looks like the sealing-in doesn't just happen to our family – it might be happening to everyone, putting their survival skills to the test in a very unique way since they can't get outside. We see a timelapse of how the family manages, including some indoor crop cultivation, but the movie seems keen to underline the fact that it's not just a survival story.

The supernatural storm happening outside the house when it gets sealed is clearly something otherworldly, and it looks fairly heavily implied that the movie might just have aliens in it. These aren't confirmed or even glimpsed on-screen in the trailer, but as it ends we see that the characters might be getting stalked by something in their home.

There are some really arresting images in the trailer, too, including a look at the outside world once nature has reclaimed it after a few years of people being locked inside. That brings up shades of The Last of Us, although this looks like it's going in a different direction.

In fact, when you think about it for more than a second, the film might end up being a fairly direct allegory for the lockdowns we all endured during the height of the coronavirus pandemic a few years ago. Literally being locked in while nature heals outside, and being forced to rely on each other for help and companionship? Horror story stuff!

The Last House arrives on Netflix on 7 August, so it's a little way off, but that might mean we get another look at before too long.

We're finally getting into the proper summer weeks now, and that means that plenty of countries around the world are getting hot enough to make you want to cower inside with the lights turned down once the evening finally cools down – which means streaming is on the menu. The rest of June gives the likes of Netflix and Prime Video some major new competition – the World Cup.

If you're not a big football fan, though, the best streaming services on the market still have some excellent new additions to offer up. You might find it a little harder than usual to find people to talk about them with, but that might feel refreshing, if anything. I've picked out the three big arrivals you need to know about, so check them out below.

I Will Find You

• Streaming on: Netflix from 18 June

This thriller looks like it's almost guaranteed to be a hit on Netflix when it comes out later in the week, with a really top-level cast but also a plot that seems laser-targeted to hook people in. It stars Sam Worthington as a father wrongly convicted of killing his son, serving out his jail time knowing he's innocent.

When he's visited by a mysterious character (Britt Lower of Severance fame) with evidence that his son isn't even dead, let alone that he did the crime, he's faced with a burning need to get out of prison and set things right. It looks like we'll get a blend of prison breakout action, but also some good old-fashioned whodunnit investigating, which could make this a really strong debut in the Netflix charts.

Your Fault: London

• Streaming on: Prime Video from 17 June

Prime Video has made a total mega-franchise out of the Our Fault movies, having already concluded a Spanish-language trilogy. It's now releasing the second part of its English-language reimagining, which relocates the action to London but still stars step-siblings Noah and Nick, with their forbidden romance now starting to get incredibly heated.

The second movie will open with them in the throes of love, having finally gotten together last time around, but there are storm clouds on the horizon. With Noah going to university and encountering all sorts of new people, and Nick getting drawn further into the underworld of racing that he loves so much, they're going to have a fight on their hands to stay together.

Voicemails for Isabelle

• Streaming on: Netflix from 19 June

If you want some steamy romance with a little less complicated legality involved, then check out Voicemails for Isabelle on Netflix at the end of the week, which seems a little more traditional (in a good way). It starts Zoey Deutch as a young woman who recently lost her sister, struggling to make her way through adult life without one of her biggest support pillars there to help.

She occasionally leaves voicemails on her sister's old phone number as a way of still feeling connected and acknowledging her grief, but she doesn't realise that the number has been reassigned to a very eligible young bachelor. He starts to fall for her while feeling bad about the access he's getting to her confessionals, but I have a feeling the end for these two will be decidedly romantic.

Silo isn't just one of the best Sci-Fi shows on Apple TV, it's based on one of the best Science Fiction novels in recent years. The original trilogy was written by Hugh Howey, beginning with a series of short stories titled Wool, followed by Shift and Dust.

Having watched the first season, reimagined for Apple TV, I devoured the full collection of books and even moved on to the additional short stories and connected works. There are differences between the books and the TV show, but it doesn't take away from this excellent story.

Season 2 deviated significantly from the book's order but still primarily covers elements from Wool, the first book. Season 3 sees a move to book two, Shift, which is where we discover how and why the Silo happened.

Though the first book is incredible as a self-contained dystopian mystery, it's the back story in the second book that's really fascinating. We see a teaser of this at the end of season two, with a scene that looks like Capitol Hill in Washington. From the new trailers for season three, it seems we will get the full story, as we do in the books (no spoilers).

While there are just three main books for the series, there are planned to be four seasons of the TV show, so season three is expected to keep to the second book, with season four taking care of the last one.

The order will likely be different, and some of the characters will change, but if Silo Season 3 even keeps roughly to the story arc of Shift, then it's going to be a wild ride.

Apple is releasing the first episode of Silo Season 3 on 3 July 2026, with new episodes launched weekly. I'm tempted to hold off to allow for a full binge session – also giving me time to rewatch season 2) but I'm not sure I can wait.

I'm a big fan of Apple TV – there's a list of reasons why it's been sitting pretty for a long while at the top of our list of the best streaming services, and one of the biggest is the boldness of its commissioning decisions. Sure, you get some interesting series coming to Netflix and Prime Video, but not with the hit rate that Apple boasts.

It seems like every month it has something new to offer that does things genuinely differently, and not just if you consider how many cultish shows it develops, whether they're sci-fi inflected or just a little paranormal. It has traditional thrillers and crime dramas, too, but I just love how willing Apple seems to be to take punts on edgier, more niche material.

That approach has brought it huge hits like Severance, and also some more modest successes, which is how I'd describe Widow's Peak, which is on the cusp of its first season's finale right now (it airs on 16 June). The show stars Matthew Rhys as the beleaguered mayor of a small coastal town, but its trailers really underplayed how weird the show actually is.

Now it's getting a second season, which is great news, and which has been confirmed by a short trailer making the announcement:

It's brief, and obviously contains no actual new footage, instead cleverly reworking a moment from the show, but it's still great news for those who've been enjoying its weird, paranormal mix of genres. I've seen some people saying it's a bit like if Twin Peaks had a kid with Parks & Recreation, which is quite the enticement, and its mixture of scary thrills with deadpan black comedy has been a word-of-mouth hit.

Crucially (from Apple's point of view, you'd imagine), the show's also gone down really well with critics, who have left it sitting on a Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%. While audiences haven't quite matched that, 93% on that front is still an excellent showing, and the two scores together suggest that people who take a gamble on the show almost certainly enjoy it a lot.

We'll find out if Apple can convert that into a proper fanbase with a second season in due course, although don't hold your breath for it to arrive any time before late 2027 if we're being optimistic.
