Netflix's huge new supernatural thriller series gets a trailer that will make you certain to watch it

Netflix has a pretty good modern history of spotlighting new series and movies from Korean creators, with Squid Game still standing out as one of its biggest launches ever, becoming one of its most iconic shows and gaining global popularity. So, when it puts a heap of budget behind a new Korean drama series, it's worth paying attention.

This month Netflix launches The East Palace, a new supernatural action thriller that looks like it has a heck of a lot going for it, including some pretty amazing-looking fight sequences, and it's finally got a proper trailer. We'd already really enjoyed the teaser, so it's great to get a longer look at the series.

The East Palace will star Nam Joo-hyuk as a demon-hunter who has the power to enter the spirit world to hunt down malevolent demons – which should clue you in fairly immediately to the fact that this is a proper supernatural series. He's drafted in by the local king to investigate the mysterious east wing of his palace, which seems to be housing all sorts of funky evil beasties.

He also finds an ally in the form of the king's daughter, who has the mysterious power to be able to perceive and indeed communicate with ghosts and demons herself, which makes her a highly useful person to know. Together, they'll have to unravel just why the demon world is targeting the palace and its residents.

Netflix

While that plot sounds like good fun, it's the visuals that really capture the attention in this case – the show looks pretty gorgeous, with a really distinctive flair that looks nice and stylised. We see glimpses of what are likely to be quite lavish action sequences set in the gloaming of the spirit world, which could be massively entertaining.

It's also clear that the show will have some horror elements, which shouldn't surprise given its subject matter. That could see it enter as a really compelling new take on a few different genres, so be sure to keep an eye out for it when it launches on 17 July.

Netflix's major new UK thriller series looks affecting ahead of surprise release date

Netflix has quietly become quite a talent factory here in the UK, specialising in finding young British actors and propelling them to massive fame when they star in shows and movies that go viral or climb the charts. While he wasn't the main star of Netflix's Sex Education, it's clear that Conor Swindell is using that show as a springboard.

Now he's fronting up another series for Netflix, and like Sex Education it's got a very British flavour to it, but with a much darker story. This is The Bombing of Pan Am 103, a retelling of the harrowing Lockerbie bombing, taking in the story from multiple perspectives, including Swindell's on the ground as what seems to be a local policeman.

The first trailer for the show came out this week, and revealed that it'll drop on Netflix this month, on 30 July – which is a bit of a surprise. Given the talent in the cast, I'd have thought Netflix would give this a little more publicity and hype-building time. As well as Swindell the show will have Patrick J. Adams, Merritt Wever, Eddie Marsan and more, so it's clearly quite a big project.

Those cast members will help to give the series an international flavour, as we see not just what it was like to be in Lockerbie during the crash and its aftermath, but also how the American authorities swung into action to investigate how such a disaster could have happened, and to chase down those it suspected were responsible for what was ultimately proven to be a bombing.

Netflix

Famously one of the widest murder investigations ever, the police and crime scene work that went into working out how Lockerbie happened is well worth a retelling, although this is also something that's still relatively fresh in the memories of many living Brits. It'll be fascinating to see how historically accurate the show stays, and the trailer makes it look like that accuracy will be a priority.

For it to be unveiled like this with just a month before releasing would have been a bad sign in the days of traditional cinema releases, but it's harder to know what to expect in the streaming era. It's perfectly possible that this one could be a sleeper hit, with a compelling story to tell and the lure of a trans-Atlantic tone.

Prime Video in July 2026: Top 5 new additions on Amazon's streamer

Never a month goes by without some big ructions in the world of big streaming, but regardless of what plans the likes of Prime Video and Netflix are making in the background, they know they have to keep pumping out new content or risk losing subscribers. That means each month brings a tide of new shows and movies to watch – and July 2026 is no exception!

I've taken the time to go through everything coming to Prime Video this month, to pick out five new original additions that I think could be worth watching. You'll find those listed below, with trailers and the day they'll release, so that you can start to get a sense of what your month might look like.

Elle

Streaming from: 1 July

This one's been highly anticipated, and a long time coming – a prequel series to the beloved movie Legally Blonde, starring Lexi Minetree, who looks almost improbably similar to a young Reece Witherspoon. She's playing the title role of Elle, but with the clock rewound so that she's still at high school in LA.

Her life gets turned upside down when she's told by her parents that they're moving to Seattle, though, leaving behind sun-bleached California for the rainy Pacific Northwest. She's going to have to completely readjust how she presents herself to fit in – or is she? This looks like a fun story of staying true to yourself and discovering just what it is that you're passionate about.

Ride or Die

Streaming from: 15 July

The biggest and best streaming services all seem to have a fascination with spies and assassins living regular lives, and this looks like another fun take on that mini-genre. It stars Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer as two best friends who've known each other for a couple of decades.

What Spencer's character doesn't realise is that her mate happens to be an international assassin, something that comes tumbling out when they're attacked one evening. From there, we can expect some fun action scenes balanced against comedy, a classic genre mashup that will most likely ensure this is a popular new movie for Prime Video.

Murder 101

Streaming from: 13 July

I have mixed feelings about true crime as a genre, but this documentary series looks like it might have a really interesting approach to the topic. It takes as its focus an inventive teacher at a Tennessee high school who's been using his sociology class as an opportunity to get teens helping with cold cases.

As much as the series charts the discoveries that a series of these classes makes in some shocking cases, it's also about how disconnected we can feel from tragedies, and how this sort of interesting teaching approach can help students find a spark in themselves. It's a three-part series and could be really valuable when it arrives in mid-July.

Young Farts Trailer Parts

Streaming from: 17 July

Another reality series, this one takes a much more light-hearted approach, taking us into the lives of some happy-go-lucky mechanics who are frankly larger than life. The Young Farts part shop is full of interesting characters that we'll clearly get to learn more about as we watch, and as they come up with new harebrained schemes.

It seems pretty clear that caravans and trailers are under huge threat in the series, too, since the trailer sees some get their doors blown off, others being dropped from great heights, and various other indignities being inflicted. It's a fun-looking little series that might just build up a cult following.

Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2

Streaming from: 31 July

My final pick is an animated one and could be a great hit if you have kids who're into DC superheroes, because it's the return of the best in that whole roster – Batman. After a great first season, Caped Crusader returns for more prettily animated stories about just how he's going to semi-violently destroy the criminal underbelly of Gotham.

The first season was a really pleasant surprise, with a more vintage, golden-age setting that pulls back on some of the techiness that Batman can rely on. Instead, it's all about biffing people on the head and socking them in the jaw, the good old-fashioned way. We'll get another ten episodes right at the end of July, a boon for any Batman fans.

Sony's no-disc decision has another huge victim –4K Blu-rays will suffer

I'll be interested to see if the news that Sony won't make disc-based physical releases for its consoles starting in January 2026 makes a proper ripple in the home cinema world, but it really should. The more I've thought about this announcement from PlayStation, the more despair I feel, and I don't think it'll just be games that are affected in the long run.

I've written a lot in the past year about how much I've enjoyed getting into physical media, starting up a modest but decent collection of movies both in standard Blu-ray and 4K formats. While I now use the brilliant Panasonic DP-UB820 and love it, for a long while I relied entirely on my PlayStation 5 to play 4K discs.

To be more precise, I used my PS5 before I upgraded to the PS5 Pro, at which point I had to fork out more money for the optional extra disc drive, since the PS5 Pro is digital-only. That already made it clear that using a disc on a PlayStation wouldn't be accessible forever, but I didn't expect it to happen so soon.

The key point I'm trying to make here is that we know the market for 4K Blu-ray players is really small – it's been that way for years, and the number of brands making players has shrunk over time.

Now, given that we can be extremely confident the PlayStation 6 won't have a disc drive (because why on earth would it?), it's highly likely that the one remaining mainstream way of being able to play 4K discs (the console under your TV) will also disappear.

Someone who didn't necessarily have a big collection of discs, but had some old favourites and could be tempted by a big new release on 4K, will soon quite probably have no hardware to actually watch a disc – unless they keep hold of their PS5 or Xbox Series X.

Given that the PS6 is likely to cost a genuine bomb, though, this might mean missing out on a decent trade-in fee for the older console, a luxury that only some will be able to afford.

It all means that an already niche market for physical cinema and TV releases might well shrink even further, and that's a terrible thing in my eyes. I've had some of the best home viewing experiences of my life in recent months thanks to proper physical releases from outlets like The Criterion Collection, replete with extras and featurettes to enrich a viewing.

In a world with fewer actual disc players, the idea that we'll still see the same number of disc releases feels pretty optimistic to me, and while we've seen revivals for formats like vinyl and cassettes in the music world, there aren't the same green shoots yet in movies.

Only this week, PlayStation users found a huge list of movies being deleted from their libraries after supposedly having been purchased, so it's not like the digital question is only for gamers. So, while it might seem unfair to say that PlayStation isn't just killing physical games with this decision, but also killing physical movies, there's certainly an argument to be made there.

Put it this way – I'd buy a Panasonic player sooner rather than later. They might get discontinued at some point, and then you'll be up the creek with just a PS6 and no disc drive to help.

Netflix’s massive John Cena comedy just shot to no.1 –but fans are divided

As we roll into July there's a new Netflix movie that's topped the streaming service's chart – and it's arguably the biggest John Cena comedy under the streamer's belt yet.

Little Brother debuted 26 June on Netflix, which is also the distribution company – so you won't find this flick anywhere else for the time being.

Cena's career has gone stratospheric in recent years, with Amazon having picked him up for 2024's Jackpot! and Ricky Stanicky. But now Netflix is here to bring the former WWE star's talents to its platform.

Little Brother trailer:

What's Little Brother about?

Cena stars as Rudd Landy, a real estate agent who is greatly successful. His world looks to be turned upside down when there's news of his "brother" having an accident.

But it's not turned upside down in a tugging-at-the-heartstrings kind of way, as Little Brother reveals Marcus Pinchel (played by Eric André), who once took part in a schooltime 'Big Brother-Little Brother' programme. But there's no blood relation.

As the trailer above reveals, things quickly descend into total chaos, as Pinchel turns out to be far more than Landy had bargained for. Even if his wife, Deirdre (Michelle Monaghan), doesn't seem to think so.

How highly rated is Little Brother?

Cena might well be a big star demanding a big budget from a big streaming service such as Netflix, but that hasn't helped it to land a big score by any means.

Indeed, Little Brother has a meagre 46% on Rotten Tomatoes – and that's only dropped lower day by day since the movie first became available to stream.

But it's all down to what you expect – and viewers are divided. While some are "Shocked that John Cena actually took this role", others found it "hilarious", quipping that people need to "lighten up".

Don't expect any real head-scratching depth, therefore, just some zany comedy – and some inevitable barrel scraping – that's not going to sit well with everyone. The R rating is a big clue to that effect.

That's not to say the movie's writers, Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel, aren't known for classics. The former has Jim Carrey epics Yes Man and Liar Liar under his belt. But, hey, things were different in the 90s and 2000s, eh?

Netflix in July 2026: 5 best all-new additions for Netflix subscribers

As a new month starts, it's tradition here at T3 to take a look at what's coming down the pike from the biggest and best streaming services on the market, so that people can get a sense of what they can look forward to. We're just on the very cusp of July right now, and if you're a Netflix subscriber, you're in the right place.

I've taken a deep look at everything coming to Netflix in July, from new TV series to original movies, and I've limited my picks below to Netflix Originals. That helps to ensure that you'll get access to them regardless of what country you're watching in. Read on to find out five of the best coming your way.

Little House on the Prairie

Streaming from: 9 July

First up is a Netflix revival of a genuine classic of children's literature in America, one that tells part of the foundation myth of the whole country, frankly. Little House on the Prairie tells a story of American migration, and the challenges that faced families who uprooted their lives in the hopes of finding prosperity.

From the trailers we've seen so far, it might also approach that myth with a little more context and compassion than some other historical versions of it, emphasising the place of native people rather than erasing them or making light. Still, this should be wholesome family-friendly fare, and possibly a very relaxing and cosy watch, if it's anything like previous long-running versions of the story.

Enola Holmes 3

Streaming from: 1 July

This one might already be available to watch by the time you check out this list, frankly. Enola Holmes has fairly quietly become a bankable franchise for Netflix, after two previous movies did big numbers with Millie Bobby Brown in the lead and titular role as Sherlock Holmes' younger sister.

She's back again this time, and planning an intimate wedding in Malta, only to have her plans upended when her older brother is mysteriously kidnapped. Rightly sensing that it might take a formidable foe to get the drop on such an intelligent mind, Enola will swing into action and take things into her own hands as she tries to put things right and get married in peace.

The Hawk

Streaming from: 16 July

This looks like a pretty bold swing from Netflix, bringing in the iconic Will Ferrell to front a comedy series in the hopes of boosting its own credentials in that genre. It looks a bit like the Anchorman approach, but taking on professional golf instead of newscasting. Ferrell plays Lonnie 'The Hawk' Hawkins, an ageing ex-pro who's become something of a joke.

He still has major ambitions, though, despite having been arguably replaced by his own son on the pro circuit. Lonnie has a long way to go before he can compete at that level again, though, so expect funny training montages and plenty of on-course action as he makes his way back to the top of the game.

Heartstopper Forever

Streaming from: 17 July

Another long-running Netflix series gets a send-off here, with Heartstopper upgrading from a final season to a movie, to see its characters off into the sunset. That said, the big question is whether they'll do so happily in love, or after a heartbreaking break-up. Some fans will be sad they're only getting a couple of hours more, though.

Still, it looks like a pretty brilliant continuation of what came before, with Nick and Charlie reckoning with how their relationship is going to work as one of them goes to university and the other doesn't. Those are classic questions, and there's every chance they're treated sensitively here – pray for a happy ending, people!

72 Hours

Streaming from: 24 July

Sometimes a broad comedy that's over and done in two hours is just what you want on a hot July day, and that's what you'll be getting from 72 Hours, which looks about as mainstream as you could like. It stars Kevin Hart in a fairly preposterous story. He's a middle-aged professional who gets added to a chat about a bachelor party by accident.

He decides to go for the hell of it and winds up spending a crazy weekend with men half his age, trying to recapture his youth and keep up with their antics. Things escalate even further beyond that, from the look of things, but the real question is whether the jokes are any good. We'll know more by the end of the month.

3 Best all-new Netflix and Prime Video arrivals for a mid-week binge (June 30-July 3)

The world of streaming never, ever sits still – and there's plenty coming down the pike as we leave June and enter the month of July. This week we've finally had the UK heatwave abate, which means it might be more straightforward to stay inside of an evening and watch some fun new shows and movies without melting.

On that note, I've taken a look at all of the new additions coming to Netflix and Prime Video this week, since they're the two biggest streaming services out there, and picked out three highlights that I think will interest people. There's a really broad set of genres to enjoy this week, so check them out below with trailers and details on which day they'll arrive.

Elle

Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video from 1 July

This charming prequel series takes a look at Elle, the star of Legally Blonde, but winds the clock back to her high school days for a different era. Reece Witherspoon has been replaced with Lexi Minetree, who frankly looks almost impossibly like a young Witherspoon, and the whole show is unsurprisingly going to open with explosions of pink colour.

Things will get more drab when Elle is forced to move to Seattle, though, where she finds it much harder to fit in and make friends. With a savvy mind and an eye for detail, though, it looks like helping to uncover a local legal scandal might just be the making of her reputation – and it could put her on a new course in life.

Enola Holmes 3

Streaming on: 1 July on Netflix

Enola Holmes has quietly become one of Netflix's biggest franchises, after two movies that clearly did really quite massive numbers for the streaming service. It's now got another sequel coming out, starring Millie Bobby Brown again as Sherlock Holmes' younger sister Enola.

This time around she's trying to organise her wedding in Malta, of all places, but gets severely distracted when Sherlock is kidnapped. For someone to get one over the most intelligent detective in the world, something must have really gone wrong, and it'll be up to Enola to put things together and work out what's happened and how she can put things right.

Human Vapor

Streaming on: Netflix from 2 July

My final pick is a niche one, but I think it looks really promising and might have the potential to break out and become a cult hit. This Japanese series will follow a bizarre, possibly supernatural series of killings that starts when an expert turns into gas live on TV, rightly terrifying people.

As detectives rush to work out how something so seemingly impossible could have happened in front of so many people, they start to uncover evidence of twisted schemes and abandoned projects. It looks really dark and fun, and the special effects as people die seem fascinatingly impressive, so don't be surprised if this one does better than you might expect.

Blu-ray collectors got it right all along – your digital movie library might soon disappear, so buy physical instead

Quick Summary

Over 550 movies and TV shows will soon be deleted from PlayStation owners' digital libraries, even if they purchased them outright.

An expiration of the content licensing agreements with Studio Canal means all of its content is being removed from the platform.

Sony has informed many customers that 100s of digital movies they've purchased will soon be deleted from their libraries.

PlayStation owners will lose access to over 500 movies from Studio Canal, after the expiration of content licensing agreements between the studio and Sony. There's a list of all the films that will be removed on the PlayStation website, but it includes the likes of the original Rambo trilogy, the Paddington movies, and The Evil Dead.

The cull list also includes many TV series, such as multiple seasons of Gomorra and The Young Pope.

They will be removed from users' libraries on 1 September 2026 (via VGC), and there doesn't seem to be a backup system or library swap service (to move your purchase rights to another platform).

Time to collect 4K Blu-rays?

Although this is just one storefront and one studio, the example it sets is clear. When you purchase a movie on a streaming platform you more often than not don't own it. You are simply purchasing the right to play it as often as you like, as long as it remains on that service.

But if, as in this case, the rights expire, you are left with nothing.

This is an argument Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray and even DVD collectors have been making for years. While streaming is more convenient, the only way to ensure you own a copy of a movie is to have a physical version (and the player to spin it on).

Picture and sound performance is an obvious benefit, with higher bitrates afforded by 4K Blu-ray discs, but even they pale into insignificance to a movie being deleted from your collection by a third-party.

It's why I retain my physical disc collection personally, even though it takes up a considerable amount of space. At least I can watch Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 4K whenever I fancy, rather than find it has simply disappeared when I next get the urge.

Apple TV's huge new comedy preaches the same gospel as Dodgeball –can it match that hype

The pressure to deliver a good comedy movie if you were involved with a previous classic must be quite something. Ben Stiller knows that better than most – he was the face of some iconic comedies in the 1990s and 2000s, but now is generally associated with more serious fare like Severance. His new movie for Apple TV, though, suggests that he's going back to the old ways, at least temporarily.

The Dink stars Jake Johnson of New Girl fame (or, at least, that's where I know and love him from), in a sports-themed comedy movie that not only calls Dodgeball to mind, but in fact deliberately invokes that genre classic in its trailer. The film will hit Apple TV on 24 July, making it a potential summer crowd-pleaser.

To be honest, the trailer actually makes the movie look like the sort of thing that Netflix normally pumps out – low-quality fare that nonetheless will do big numbers because people undeniably do love an easy watch on a summer evening. That might be me doing it a disservice, though, and Stiller has clearly shown that he can create a properly interesting project.

He's producing the movie this time, but he also cameos in the trailer. He's a doctor who tells Johnson's character Dusty, a past-his-prime tennis semi-pro, that the best way to rehabilitate an injured wrist is to swap to pickleball. Dusty just so happens to despise the sport as a bastardised version of tennis for the old and weak, but perhaps being forced to play it could change his mind?

Apple TV

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to estimate how the movie might unfold from this premise, with Dusty coming to grudgingly love the pickleball community he's been vilifying for so long, before realising that he could be a way bigger star in this nascent sport than he ever was in tennis. Sprinkled along the way are some other fun cameos, not least from Andy Roddick – and Ed Harris seems to have been roped in as a fuddy-duddy tennis defender.

The Dink looks like a movie that might divide audiences. If you know ahead of time that it's not shooting for the moon, it could end up being a really fun and self-contained little oasis of amusement during what'll probably be a hot and sticky late July. If you don't, then it might disappoint – but we'll get a better sense of that risk when it comes out in around a month's time.

Disney+ might have just announced the streaming debut of the year – you have to tune in

It's always fun when one of the biggest and best streaming services on the market makes a proper splash by adding a massive release, fresh from cinemas. That's absolutely the level of hype appropriate for the film that Disney+ just announced it'll be adding on 29 July, a day before it's even available to digitally rent or buy: The Devil Wears Prada 2.

The sequel that we didn't even really realise people wanted came to cinemas earlier this year, and scored some pretty impressive box office numbers – scoring some $677 million dollars, according to some reports. That made it a huge success, which means it's even better news that Disney is adding it for free.

Crucially, I think most fans would agree, The Devil Wears Prada 2 managed to thread the needle by reuniting all of the most important members of the original cast. That means, of course, Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, but also the all-important supporting members, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt. They're all here and seem to be having the best time of their lives.

Once again, the movie sees Hathaway playing Andy Sachs, and once again it opens with her coming to fictional magazine Runway with a new job. This time she's returning to the fold to be the new Features Editor, and she's looking to make a splash without (hopefully) annoying her old boss Miranda (Streep).

Macall Polay / 20th Century Studios

The print media not exactly having the best time (I wouldn't know a thing about that, of course), the movie circles around the idea of how Andy can help Runway retain its position as an icon of the magazine world. It's a fun little concept, but the real joy is, like in the first movie, all in the interactions between Miranda and the whole rest of the world.

Forget Prime Day, forget the World Cup –watch this huge returning HBO series tonight

It's a busy week in the wider world right now, and if you're anything like me you're getting bombarded with Prime Day deals and World Cup hype – but you might fancy a break from either or both of those things before too long. After all, it's possible to get a little carried away with the need to buy things from Amazon, and it's definitely easy to make bad decisions where early-hours World Cup kickoffs are concerned.

Because of how much airtime the World Cup has rightly been sucking up recently, I think the return of House of the Dragon has been a little under-hyped, to be honest, although a second season that kept plates spinning without much decisive action might have played a part there, too.

It is back, though, and however you access your HBO shows, you should now be able to watch the first episode, and I really recommend that you do! It's a big one, with a major battle unfolding at sea, and most of the main characters being given something to do.

Frankly, I'd also recommend that you follow in my footsteps and watch HBO's own recap of the first two seasons, too, because they're labyrinthine in retrospect. The fact that it's 15 minutes long on its own is a good indication of how much ground it covers, too.

I'm going to avoid spoiling anything about the opening episode of the third season, obviously, but I think it showcases what's great about the series (as well as some of its limitations). Principally, it's operating on a grand scale in the fantasy genre when few rivals are willing to commit to similar ambitions.

There are so many characters, and so many locations, and all of them look pretty sumptuous – with a high-budget sheen that you can basically see in every scene. It also has a continued and brutal willingness to kill off characters that really is refreshing, even if those plot points come from the source material.

That said, the show also suffers from some of the plotting conveniences that plagued the last few seasons of Game of Thrones, with characters thwarted in unsatisfying ways or by issues that should be minor (like locked doors, in this case), and I'm hoping the rest of the season is a little more decisive on that front.

We'll know over the coming weeks, as the season continues to air on a Sunday evening in the US, making Monday evening the night to watch it here in the UK. I'm doing so through Now, using an Entertainment pass, but with HBO Max now on our shores you've got options for how to access it.

The biggest Netflix franchise you're not watching is about to get a massive final season

The scale of the streaming industry now means that it can be quite hard to keep a grip on what franchises are doing huge numbers without you even realising it. That's a label I would use for Outer Banks, a show that Netflix has turned into a cult, but one that I've never dipped my toe into. Now it's getting a fifth and final season and fans seem to be rabidly excited.

The trailer dropped earlier this week, and gives us a look at the surviving members of the central cast as they try to reckon with a major event at the end of last season. It confirms again that this is the end of the road for them, but makes it clear that we can expect some fairly explosive action as things come to a head.

For the uninitiated, Outer Banks started as a sort of modern take on The Goonies, starring improbably beautiful teenagers in North Carolina who hear tales of a legendary treasure that's eluded searchers for generations. Now, seasons later, that treasure has been found and lost, confiscated and stolen, and the central feuds between two young groups of treasure hunters has deepened with time.

Just as important, though, is the fact that local law enforcement has become an enemy to our main characters, with some corruption and seediness seeping into things. Now that the original treasure arc is largely resolved, this season should be more about getting our characters the send-off their fans want.

That said, plenty of fans out there think the show might have been best served by ending after Season 3, when that original arc was basically wrapped up, so this season has a challenge on its hands. It has to justify the show continuing a little longer, while also being entertaining enough to be more than just an extended finale.

We'll know whether it meets that brief when it drops on 20 August, in a couple of months' time, but even if it's a damp squib you can still expect it to do some huge numbers in Netflix's charts. After all, the huge streamer doesn't renew shows out of sentimentality – this one has a major fanbase to rely on.

Netflix's enormous dark thriller series looks like it might do something you've never seen before in first trailer

I love a good genre mashup; whether a show is one half sci-fi and another half whodunnit, or horror inflected with comedy, it's always really fun to see material that doesn't just stick to one lane. In the streaming era, I'd argue that some of the biggest platforms (like Netflix) are starting to realise that these blends can work really well for audiences, too.

That would explain some of the logic behind its new show The East Palace, a Korean drama that does things quite differently. At points in its debut trailer you could think that it's going to be a traditional prestige historical drama, but as things go further you'll start to see that it's got heavy dashes of fantasy too, and a little horror to spice things up.

Set in a fictional but deliberately credible historical era, the show will star Nam Joo-hyuk as Gu-cheon, a ghost-slayer. His unique power is that he can in fact transform into a ghost himself (and it's him you'll see with a cluster of swords on his back in the trailer's latter stages) in order to slay demons and ghosts, before returning to his corporeal form.

He'll apparently be teaming up with a courtly lady, Roh Yoon-seo as Saeng-gang, who can hear the dead and indeed communicate with them, making her a very useful asset to him. They're going to be hired to investigate paranormal situations and hauntings associated with the titular East Palace, to try to figure out what on earth's causing so much trouble there.

Beyond that (much of which is from the show's blurb), the trailer is actually fairly ambiguous – we don't really get a look at a main antagonist, for example, which doubtless will exist when it's available to stream on 17 July, in a month's time.

Regardless, though, it looks really sumptuous and has oodles of visual character to boast about, including some CGI sequences that look absolutely draw dropping from the glimpses we see in tightly-edited sequences. Whether the show can live up to the promise this trailer gives off, we'll find out in due course.

When HBO announces a new show, you sit up and pay attention, and that rule frankly applies regardless of genre. As it happens, when Larry David announces a new comedy project, a very similar logic should be applied, which makes for quite a double whammy when it comes to Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness.

David famously ended his long-running show Curb Your Enthusiasm a couple of years back, but the industry rumour always seemed to be that he'd be back before too long – as had happened before a few times. Now that's come true, but his new show does look pretty different, as confirmed by its first trailer.

This is more of a sketch comedy approach, as opposed to a painfully awkward scripted series, and it sees David skipping through history examining what it might be like if his famously curmudgeonly characteristics were dropped into some of the most important and consequential moments in the long past of the USA.

That's a funny concept, and it's made funnier by the fact that the show is from the production company founded by the actual Obamas – in some ways the whole thing might be an implicit middle finger to the current presidential administration. Either way, the trailer makes it clear that we'll get a look at plenty of different time periods through the show's seven episode run.

There are looks at World War I and the experience of US troops in the trenches; the American Revolution; the invention of flight; and even peasant existence long before that – all with David mugging his way through scenes as a suspiciously modern-minded grouch. The joy, of course, will be in seeing how his grumpiness changes the vibes of scenes we know so well from other movies and show.

Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness will hit HBO Max on 26 June, so it's around a week away at this stage – if you're a comedy fan or a closet history nut then this is likely to be a real treat.

A £4 million hypercar in 4,000 pieces – I tried the Lego Technic Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear

The Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear is the latest model in Lego’s Ultimate Car Concept range, and inducts the Swedish megacar into an even more exclusive collection of just six cars. The Lego Technic model provides not just a visually accurate interpretation of the car, but it mimics some of the Spear’s most notable features.

Koenigsegg is a Swedish success story, rising from the boyhood dream of Christian von Koenigsegg to one of the most sought-after luxury supercar producers in the world. From its pristine factory in southern Sweden, it produces just 70 cars a year and has a waiting list of over seven years for new models.

The Sadair’s Spear joined the line-up in 2025, named after the horse his father, Jesko, rode in his last race in 1976. Costing roughly £4 million each, only 30 cars exist, and every one was sold before they were even made. They are now changing hands between collectors for even more.

This is the kind of car that kids (and adults) put pictures of on their wall. It’s a road-legal track-inspired megacar, with a 5.0-litre V8, 1603hp, a huge spoiler and Koenigsegg’s signature fighter jet-style windscreen. Megacar is a term reserved for those supercars with a power-to-weight ratio of greater than 1:1, and the Sadiar’s Spear produces 1,157 horsepower per tonne.

It also boasts the impressive Lightning Speed Transmission (LST) for instant shifts through its nine gears, a unique triplex suspension system and the signature Koenigsegg Ghost mode, which raises the huge rear wing, the bonnet, and opens both dihedral doors.

A technical challenge

Creating a Lego Technic version of the Sadair’s Spear was a challenge that took its designers over a year and a half – longer than any previous Ultimate Car Concept. The 4,104-piece model is 59cm long, 28cm wide and weighs nearly 3kg.

The really clever part is that the Lego Sadair’s Spear features working versions of the suspension and the sequential 9-speed gearbox; the paddles on the steering wheel click forward and back, switching the gears through the series of cogs visible at the back of the car at a slightly larger-than-life scale.

“It doesn’t matter how many times I try to explain the light speed transmission,” says CEO Christian von Koenigsegg, “but here we don’t need to. Here you can build it and see for yourself how it works.”

The model also replicates the Ghost mode. Lift the rear section of the car and the bonnet and doors automatically follow, thanks to some mind-boggling engineering. This movement has become synonymous with Koenigsegg, and is a nod to the Swedish Air Force’s Ghost Squadron, from which the ghost logo comes.

Hands-on

The clever part about Lego models, including the Technic range, is that they all rely on standardised pieces. Of the 4,104 in this set, only 19 pieces had been specially made for the Koenigsegg, including the wishbone suspension, the cogs to allow the nine-gear movement and the roof panels.

Two things really struck me about the Lego Technic Sadair’s Spear. The first was how close the design looks to the real car. The attention to detail, down to the way the doors open and the seven-spoke turbine blade Aircore carbon-fibre alloys, is really impressive. The second is just how big this model is. Built at a 1:8 scale, the size and weight are significant, and you will need plenty of shelf space to display it properly once you’ve finished – and you’ll want to show this off.

The way the sequential gearbox has been designed for this model is really stunning. Not only can you change through the gears using the paddles, but the different gears then offer different levels of torque to the wheels, due to the pistons moving at different speeds in the car’s engine. The way the Triplex wishbone suspension operates is also highly accurate, providing real shock absorbers in the model.

Like most who saw the Sadiar’s Spear, though, I had to try out the Ghost mode. In the real car, this is activated from the key, but on the model you manually raise the rear section. As it raises, the doors open, folding upwards and the wing mirrors fold in, as they do on the real car. The bonnet also raises at the same time, all connected by a series of pieces under the gearbox. You can also open the doors individually by pressing a small button further back in the car’s body.

There is one difference though from the real car – aside from the price – and that’s the colour. The Sadiar’s Spear is finished in a dark brown metallic paint; for the model though, Lego has chosen black. During prototyping, versions of the brown were tried, but it was decided the colour didn’t look as appealing in Technic Lego, and adding the metallic effect was not feasible. The use of orange for the interior and details gives the model a sporty feel that matches the original car.

Building it

Kasper René Hansen, Lego’s lead designer on the project, told me that the original building meetings, where he briefed the team on how to build the Sadair’s Spear, took a full week. Once the instruction manual was finished, that build time reduced to three solid days.

For us non-professional builders, I expect you will need significantly longer. Not that you’d want to rush this process – it is, after all, what makes Lego so fun. This is the biggest of the Ultimate Car Concepts to date, beating the McLaren P1 by around 200 pieces; it’s also only the second model to have a removable roof, matching the real car and allowing you to get a better view inside.

Full-size cars

Not content with making one of the most impressive scale models of the Sadiar’s Spear, Lego also set its large format specialists to work and created a life-sized Lego version. Following projects like the Lego F1 cars last year, this 1:1 version looks just like the real car, and it drives – fast.

The full-sized model is made from 327,906 pieces and took more than 9,400 hours to develop and construct. Fitted with dual motors and a large electric battery, it’s considerably faster than previous full-scale Lego models. The team’s aim was to allow the car to reach 100km/h (62mph).

Testing the full-size model at Goodwood on a reverse route of the hill climb, the Lego Sadiar’s Spear reached 111km/h (69mph) with Koenigsegg Test Driver, Markus Lundh, behind the wheel. The model is expected to debut at Aurora, the Scandinavian Concours and be back at Goodwood for the Festival of Speed later this month.

Disney+ subscribers lose premium video option (again) – but only in certain countries

Disney was found to have impinged on HEVC patents owned by InterDigital in the US, which has resulted in the high-end picture technology being removed.

Millions of Disney+ subscribers have once again lost access to Dolby Vision, even when paying for Premium membership.

Disney has had to remove the HDR option from its streaming service after losing a patent case filed by US firm InterDigital. It affects 11 countries across Europe.

In February, we reported that both Dolby Vision and 3D streaming options were removed from Disney+ across EU member states. At the time, Disney said that they were unavailable due to "technical challenges".

It became apparent that the enhanced picture services were suspended due to a dispute with InterDigital, which claimed the technology used by Disney impinged on its patents. An injunction had been imposed by a German court.

However, it seemed Disney found a workaround and Dolby Vision was restored in countries outside of Germany itself. Now that is no longer the case.

According to InterDigital (via FlatpanelsHD), a new injunction has been imposed by the Unified Patent Court. This covers several countries in the EU (not the UK): "The Mannheim Local Division of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) ruled that InterDigital is entitled to an injunction over Disney's infringement of an InterDigital patent covering certain video encoding techniques related to HEVC and confirmed the validity of this patent," it said.

"The UPC is a pan-European patent court which issues decisions that apply across multiple countries in the European Union (EU); here, the injunction against Disney spans 11 EU countries."

Disney has responded with confirmation: "As a result of litigation before a European patent court, we have been required to make changes to the availability of Dolby Vision and 3D in Denmark and several neighbouring countries," it said.

"We are disappointed that we have had to do this, and we share our customers' frustration."

It has also been revealed by FlatpanelsHD that Amazon Prime Video, which uses similar streaming technology, has brokered a deal with InterDigital so that it can continue to offer Dolby Vision to subscribers.

Netflix's steamiest romance series will get a finale film to send it off into the sunset

Netflix, like many of the best streaming services apart from it, has been slowly but surely building up quite a repertoire when it comes to steamy romance dramas. It figured out quite a few years ago that audiences absolutely love a bit of relationship drama, and it's built out more than one mega-franchise from that genre. One of the first big hits for its efforts was Heartstopper.

This very British story about coming of age and coming out in the UK while at school became a huge fan favourite and ran for three seasons before Netflix decided that the best way to send it off wasn't a fourth season. Instead, we're getting a finale film, and it just got its first trailer ahead of arriving on 17 July.

Heartstopper Forever will pick up the story of Nick and Charlie as they head into a genuinely pivotal part of their lives, at the end of school. They're deciding what's next for them individually and as a unit, with Nick making ready to go to university and Charlie finding himself more and more as his introversion falls away.

As anyone who had a teenage relationship will know, though, these sorts of thresholds in life tend to bring a huge amount of angst and worry with them – and that looks to be guaranteed from the trailer. Nick's clearly feeling all sorts of anxiety about what his life looks like without Charlie right there by his side, and Charlie in turn is worried about their codependency.

Of course, that all sounds a bit worrying and negative, but I have a pretty good feeling that Heartstopper won't take the route of a super sad ending. Worst case we might get a relationship break while Nick sorts himself out an uni, but I reckon we get a rosier outcome for this pair. Netflix knows just as well as the original author of the graphic novels that the show's based on that people don't really want super depressing endings, after all.

If you're a huge fan of the series, you'll want to circle 17 July in your diary or get a calendar reminder in there – it's likely to be a big day for the romance genre on streaming.

Netflix's massive new sci-fi horror movie could take the world by storm

I've never held back from heaping praise on Apple TV's commissioning team over the last few years because of the way it's consistently taken fun bets on interesting new sci-fi ideas, so it's only fair that Netflix gets a proper nod for unveiling an equally intriguing project. It's just trailed The Last House, which looks like a fascinating blend of sci-fi and horror elements.

The original movie will star Wagner Moura (fresh from an Oscar nomination for The Secret Agent) opposite Greta Lee, as a pair of parents whose life is upended when they discover they can't leave their home one morning. From the looks of the first trailer, though, it's not that they're under house arrest – something far more sinister is actually unfolding.

In fact, it looks like the sealing-in doesn't just happen to our family – it might be happening to everyone, putting their survival skills to the test in a very unique way since they can't get outside. We see a timelapse of how the family manages, including some indoor crop cultivation, but the movie seems keen to underline the fact that it's not just a survival story.

The supernatural storm happening outside the house when it gets sealed is clearly something otherworldly, and it looks fairly heavily implied that the movie might just have aliens in it. These aren't confirmed or even glimpsed on-screen in the trailer, but as it ends we see that the characters might be getting stalked by something in their home.

There are some really arresting images in the trailer, too, including a look at the outside world once nature has reclaimed it after a few years of people being locked inside. That brings up shades of The Last of Us, although this looks like it's going in a different direction.

In fact, when you think about it for more than a second, the film might end up being a fairly direct allegory for the lockdowns we all endured during the height of the coronavirus pandemic a few years ago. Literally being locked in while nature heals outside, and being forced to rely on each other for help and companionship? Horror story stuff!

The Last House arrives on Netflix on 7 August, so it's a little way off, but that might mean we get another look at before too long.

3 top new Netflix and Prime Video arrivals for a mid-week binge (June 15-19)

We're finally getting into the proper summer weeks now, and that means that plenty of countries around the world are getting hot enough to make you want to cower inside with the lights turned down once the evening finally cools down – which means streaming is on the menu. The rest of June gives the likes of Netflix and Prime Video some major new competition – the World Cup.

If you're not a big football fan, though, the best streaming services on the market still have some excellent new additions to offer up. You might find it a little harder than usual to find people to talk about them with, but that might feel refreshing, if anything. I've picked out the three big arrivals you need to know about, so check them out below.

I Will Find You

Streaming on: Netflix from 18 June

This thriller looks like it's almost guaranteed to be a hit on Netflix when it comes out later in the week, with a really top-level cast but also a plot that seems laser-targeted to hook people in. It stars Sam Worthington as a father wrongly convicted of killing his son, serving out his jail time knowing he's innocent.

When he's visited by a mysterious character (Britt Lower of Severance fame) with evidence that his son isn't even dead, let alone that he did the crime, he's faced with a burning need to get out of prison and set things right. It looks like we'll get a blend of prison breakout action, but also some good old-fashioned whodunnit investigating, which could make this a really strong debut in the Netflix charts.

Prime Video has made a total mega-franchise out of the Our Fault movies, having already concluded a Spanish-language trilogy. It's now releasing the second part of its English-language reimagining, which relocates the action to London but still stars step-siblings Noah and Nick, with their forbidden romance now starting to get incredibly heated.

The second movie will open with them in the throes of love, having finally gotten together last time around, but there are storm clouds on the horizon. With Noah going to university and encountering all sorts of new people, and Nick getting drawn further into the underworld of racing that he loves so much, they're going to have a fight on their hands to stay together.

Voicemails for Isabelle

If you want some steamy romance with a little less complicated legality involved, then check out Voicemails for Isabelle on Netflix at the end of the week, which seems a little more traditional (in a good way). It starts Zoey Deutch as a young woman who recently lost her sister, struggling to make her way through adult life without one of her biggest support pillars there to help.

She occasionally leaves voicemails on her sister's old phone number as a way of still feeling connected and acknowledging her grief, but she doesn't realise that the number has been reassigned to a very eligible young bachelor. He starts to fall for her while feeling bad about the access he's getting to her confessionals, but I have a feeling the end for these two will be decidedly romantic.

Apple TV's Silo season 3 will show how it all began – and I can't wait to watch this Sci-Fi epic

Silo isn't just one of the best Sci-Fi shows on Apple TV, it's based on one of the best Science Fiction novels in recent years. The original trilogy was written by Hugh Howey, beginning with a series of short stories titled Wool, followed by Shift and Dust.

Having watched the first season, reimagined for Apple TV, I devoured the full collection of books and even moved on to the additional short stories and connected works. There are differences between the books and the TV show, but it doesn't take away from this excellent story.

Season 2 deviated significantly from the book's order but still primarily covers elements from Wool, the first book. Season 3 sees a move to book two, Shift, which is where we discover how and why the Silo happened.

Though the first book is incredible as a self-contained dystopian mystery, it's the back story in the second book that's really fascinating. We see a teaser of this at the end of season two, with a scene that looks like Capitol Hill in Washington. From the new trailers for season three, it seems we will get the full story, as we do in the books (no spoilers).

While there are just three main books for the series, there are planned to be four seasons of the TV show, so season three is expected to keep to the second book, with season four taking care of the last one.

The order will likely be different, and some of the characters will change, but if Silo Season 3 even keeps roughly to the story arc of Shift, then it's going to be a wild ride.

Apple is releasing the first episode of Silo Season 3 on 3 July 2026, with new episodes launched weekly. I'm tempted to hold off to allow for a full binge session – also giving me time to rewatch season 2) but I'm not sure I can wait.

Great, now it looks like robot Muppets are coming to take over the world

Disney has shared a behind-the-scenes look at how it's bringing the Muppets to one of its most popular theme park rides, and the footage is trippy.

The clip shows performers wearing motion-capture suits while acting out scenes for a new Muppets-themed version of Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Walt Disney World. So far, so normal. Then you notice one of them is riding around on a mobility scooter pretending to be Kermit the Frog.

The motion-capture process is being used to capture movements and performances that will later be transformed into digital Muppet characters.

Watching real humans act out the roles is already entertaining enough, but seeing iconic characters recreated through modern animation technology feels like something straight out of sci-fi comedy.

It's also a reminder of how sophisticated motion-capture technology has become. The same techniques used in blockbuster movies and video games are now helping bring theme park attractions to life. This lets Disney create more expressive characters and immersive experiences than traditional animatronics alone have been able to offer.

There is something wonderfully strange about seeing beloved felt-covered characters created using the same technology behind some of the world's most advanced digital effects.

The footage also highlights how quickly the line between physical attractions and digital entertainment is blurring. Theme parks are starting to borrow techniques from gaming, film and virtual production to create experiences that weren't possible a decade ago.

Today's motion-capture performers in funny suits could be helping create tomorrow's most convincing digital characters.

If you spot a motion-captured Kermit rolling silently towards you on a scooter, maybe seeing this first won't leave you quite so horrified.

Apple's new supernatural thriller just got some Season 2 news that you're going to want to know

I'm a big fan of Apple TV – there's a list of reasons why it's been sitting pretty for a long while at the top of our list of the best streaming services, and one of the biggest is the boldness of its commissioning decisions. Sure, you get some interesting series coming to Netflix and Prime Video, but not with the hit rate that Apple boasts.

It seems like every month it has something new to offer that does things genuinely differently, and not just if you consider how many cultish shows it develops, whether they're sci-fi inflected or just a little paranormal. It has traditional thrillers and crime dramas, too, but I just love how willing Apple seems to be to take punts on edgier, more niche material.

That approach has brought it huge hits like Severance, and also some more modest successes, which is how I'd describe Widow's Peak, which is on the cusp of its first season's finale right now (it airs on 16 June). The show stars Matthew Rhys as the beleaguered mayor of a small coastal town, but its trailers really underplayed how weird the show actually is.

Now it's getting a second season, which is great news, and which has been confirmed by a short trailer making the announcement:

It's brief, and obviously contains no actual new footage, instead cleverly reworking a moment from the show, but it's still great news for those who've been enjoying its weird, paranormal mix of genres. I've seen some people saying it's a bit like if Twin Peaks had a kid with Parks & Recreation, which is quite the enticement, and its mixture of scary thrills with deadpan black comedy has been a word-of-mouth hit.

Crucially (from Apple's point of view, you'd imagine), the show's also gone down really well with critics, who have left it sitting on a Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%. While audiences haven't quite matched that, 93% on that front is still an excellent showing, and the two scores together suggest that people who take a gamble on the show almost certainly enjoy it a lot.

We'll find out if Apple can convert that into a proper fanbase with a second season in due course, although don't hold your breath for it to arrive any time before late 2027 if we're being optimistic.

Netflix's next enormous historical smash hit just got a trailer, and it proves something quite important

Whenever Netflix chooses a new IP to be a big TV project, it doubtless has an almost scientific method behind the scenes. After all, we're now years into the streaming era and it's adapted a whole host of books, mangas and games into shows, many of which have done enormous numbers for it. Still, though, that doesn't stop every project from being at least some sort of a risk.

Take the latest big novel series that it's adapting, which just so happens to be one of the most influential and best-selling in American history: Little House on the Prairie. The books have already been made into one long-running and much-loved series, but now Netflix is updating things with a higher budget and doubtless the hope that it'll run for ages, too.

After a teaser a couple of weeks ago, we got a proper trailer this week to showcase a bit more of what awaits the Ingall family when they upend their life and migrate to the prairie of Minnesota. Those huge open expanses promise the possibility of a better life for them all, but also hold clear and present dangers that need to be tackled head on.

The trailer shows us how the family will indeed be prepared for the challenges of life on the frontier, but it also makes clear that they'll only survive and thrive if they can make connections and find friends to rely on. That won't be hard, though, since anyone who's read even just the first book will know that the whole Ingall clan has hearts of gold – they're good people to their core.

It'll be really interesting to see how much appetite people have for this sort of quasi-Western historical drama, which is so much less absurd and thrill-a-minute than many competing shows. The whole attraction of the series is likely to be its slower pace and more gentle storytelling, although the trailer still shows us wolves and other frightening parts of outdoor life.

The show clearly also aims to tackle the question of indigenous Americans and the way they were treated in this period of history. Whether it can do so with total clarity, or if it'll sugarcoat things a little for the wide family-friendly audience it's courting. I'm fascinated to see how that unfolds, when the show arrives on 9 July, in just under a month's time.

Prime Video's cult reboot could be something special based on this sparkling trailer

Prime Video is one of many out of the best streaming services right now to know that mining people's nostalgia is a great way to score hits, whether it's in the form of movies or shows. Remakes and reboots are in vogue in a big way, and have been for years, so it isn't the biggest surprise to see Elle, which takes on Legally Blonde and gives it an unexpected prequel series.

The show takes a look at Elle before she ever went to law school, and a new full trailer opens with her living the high life as a queen bee in LA, celebrating her birthday with a lavish party that's unsurprisingly pink from top to bottom. What she doesn't realise is that her life's about to be upended by a move to rainy Seattle.

We see parts of her arrival in this new, far less sunny city, as she struggles to adapt her bubblegum-coloured personality to a vibe that's far more laid-back and, for lack of a better word, cool. She'll face the classic question of whether she should pretend to be something she's not, in order to fit in with people that she doesn't even really know yet.

The trailer gives us a glimmer of hope, though, by hinting at how she'll start to make friends and gain a positive reputation – investigations and campaigning. Hinting at her later talent for legal work, it looks like she'll slowly make her way into a group of students who are looking into some local scholastic controversies, and find her passion driving her to figure out what's going on and who's to blame.

It all looks quite frankly idyllic, and with at least a couple of gags in the trailer that make it look like the writers have a good sense of what made the original movie so fun, it could be that this is a take on the character that's actually surprisingly faithful despite the passing of time.

Plus, in the form of Lexi Minetree the show has a young star who looks almost unbelievably similar to a young Reece Witherspoon – from certain angles I almost thought there was some CGI face-blending going on, which is a real boast for the casting director in this case. The series starts on 1 July, so strap in if you loved the movie some 25 years ago.

Quick Summary

The showrunner and production company behind Doctor Who have departed the show, and the planned Christmas special has been cancelled.

So where does that leave the UK's most beloved sci-fi series?

It seemed like something was wrong. After all, a year has elapsed since the last season of Doctor Who aired (to its lowest viewing figures in 63 years) and we've not heard a peep about a new one since.

Now the BBC has confirmed the worst – the future of Doctor Who is currently up in the air.

Showrunner Russell T Davies has departed (for the second time) and the production company, Bad Wolf, will make it no longer. A planned Christmas special for 2026 has even been cancelled.

The writing was on the cards when it was announced Disney+ was pulling out of showing the series globally. And as fun as some episodes were (including the spectacular, surprise ending), Ncuti Gatwa's run as the 15th Doctor garnered as much criticism as it did praise.

So, where does future lie for the UK's most beloved and long-running sci-fi series? Well, there is some hope.

The BBC has revealed that it is looking for a new production partner to take up the reins: "Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC and this tender underpins the BBC’s continued commitment to Doctor Who ensuring audiences will enjoy the show for years to come," it said in a statement.

It has put the show out to tender, meaning production companies and studios can submit their own ideas, pitches and proposals to make future series. Hopefully, that'll result in new ideas, fresh takes on the mythos, existing characters and villains, and a cunning way of intertwining the shock ending of the last season into the storyline.

What I hope doesn't happen is we get anything similar Spielberg's TV movie starring the eighth Doctor.

I was actually in Hollywood in the mid-90s (filming for Channel 4's GamesMaster) when we saw some behind-closed-doors tech demos of that particular Doctor Who revival, and let's just say it was very different to what was eventually broadcast. Two words: Spider Daleks. That's all I'll say.

Hopefully, the BBC will be more careful to protect its decades-old asset this time.

Who knows? We might even be able to convince Peaky Blinders' Steven Knight to have a go at creating his own vision for Doctor Who. He'll be a Brummie and played by Cillian Murphy, of course, but I'm down for that.

Whatever happens, we just need a safe pair of hands to take the Doctor on their next series of adventures. And if handled correctly, I'm sure there'll be plenty willing to take the ride too.

Netflix's huge new thriller sequel suggests a series that might run and run forever

When you tot up a list of Netflix's biggest series in your head, you'll probably default to some expected answers like Squid Game and Stranger Things, but it can be easy to forget that it's also spawned some impressive movie franchises of its own. True, the majority of Netflix's original movies don't get sequels, but at least one of its series is still going strong.

Enola Holmes debuted back in 2020 and looked at the time like a fairly transparent attempt to capitalise on some of Netflix's biggest acting contracts. It took Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things and Henry Cavill from The Witcher and stuck them in a film together, and the result was a hit with audiences. Now, six years later, we're getting a threequel.

The film picks up some time after the events of the second movie, with Enola (Sherlock Holmes' spirited younger sister) living in bliss with her love Tewkesbury. When he proposes that they actually marry, though, it kicks off a chain of events that she has little control over. Firstly, it looks like the ceremony will have to happen in Malta for some reason (not just because of tax breaks for movie projects, either).

Once they're actually on the Mediterranean island, though, it would seem that Sherlock's going to go and get himself kidnapped, leaving Enola in the lurch with another major mystery to solve. Frankly, from a viewer's point of view, one can only hope that the film actually gets to that moment really quickly, since the more time spent sleuthing, the better.

The fact of the matter is that this series could run and run from here – after the first movie I wouldn't have said they had loads more material to uncover, but now that Enola's character is pretty established, it's just a matter of writing more mysteries. With Henry Cavill clearly game to pop in for a few days' filming each time, and Mille Bobby Brown basically a co-founder of Netflix at this point, what's stopping them?

Well, probably the big executive viewership counter in the sky, for one. It's clear that Netflix is brutal with whether shows and movies deserve sequels, based entirely on engagement when they release – so it'll be pivotal to observe how Enola Holmes 3 performs when it comes out on 1 July.

I'm finally watching this surprising fantasy hit on HBO, and I should have started way earlier

When your write about streaming as much as I do, it's easy for people to assume that you spend all day, every day watching shows and movies to keep up with everything coming out. The reality is much less fun than that – just like everyone else, I have limited time outside of work in which to pick and choose the shows that most interest me, which means that plenty get missed.

Frankly, even when shows do pique my interest I'll still often wait a little while to watch them, to avoid interrupting another season that I'm in the middle of, for example. That's what happened to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the second spinoff show from Game of Thrones that came out earlier this year – I've only just got around to watching it, and I'm having a grand old time.

The show takes a look at Westeros through a very different lens, focussing on a single pair of characters rather than a sprawling cast in many different locations. It opens with Dunk, a giant young man, burying his master, a cantankerous hedge knight who he'd been squire to. He's now a knight in his own right, but with no reputation to speak of, so he sets off to a nearby tourney in the hopes of making a name for himself.

Along the way he picks up a tiny young lad, Egg, who says he wishes to be Dunk's squire. He has secrets of his own, and the show quickly starts to unfold them, but I've been really enjoying how differently paced the episodes are compared to Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon. They're generally shorter, and take a much gentler pace, to give you more time to sit with Dunk in particular as things unfold around him.

I'm halfway through the show's first season and I'm having a great time, even if things just took a turn for the worse for Dunk's own personal chances of success and survival. I'm hoping that the scope of the show doesn't widen out much from here, too – it's strength has been how limited its locations have been and how much time it takes to unfold a given day or night.

Don't get me wrong, I'm also excited for the return of House of the Dragon and its grander scope, especially as someone who doesn't know exactly how that story will unfold. Still, it's been a brilliant change of pace to sink into A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms ahead of the bigger show's return this month – I highly recommend it if you haven't dipped your toe yet.

For the past four years, and very different reasons, World Cup 2026 has been the only thing standing between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and retirement. Messi was set to bow out on top when Argentina triumphed in Qatar but the Flea couldn't resist another shot at glory, while CR7 knows he'll never rest easy if football's greatest prize continues to elude him. Especially now his arch-rival has got there first.

As far as subplots go, it's not a bad one. It's somewhat fitting, however, that both Messi and Ronaldo could well be relegated to the sidelines – metaphorically, rather than literally – at this summer's tournament. While they can each still deliver magic moments, it's hard to escape the sense that they're each now holding their respective nations back by stunting the next generation of Argentine and Portuguese players.

The Spain team, by contrast, looks like a far more cohesive unit, with twin playmakers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams acting predominantly as providers rather than finishers. That emphasis on team above individual is one of the prime reasons La Roja, the reigning European champions, are the pre-tournament favourites.

France, who went all the way in Russia before falling to Argentina in the final four years ago via a penalty shootout, are a close second. Although Kylian Mbappe's defensive efforts leave a lot to be desired, he's already an all-time World Cup great who could feasibly break Miroslav Klose's goalscoring record this summer. Having the core of the back-to-back Champions League-winning PSG team at the heart of the side frees up the skipper to do his thing.

It promises to be a tournament to remember, so make sure you tune in from wherever you are in the world.

The biggest reason to get Disney+ is coming back for one more season

It's almost easy to forget just how much of a sensation The Bear was when it first arrived. This little-heralded show about an ailing local sandwich joint in Chicago was a proper word of mouth hit, making stars out of multiple cast members and attracting some truly crazy cameos for subsequent seasons. Now, just four years later, it's about to end with its fifth season.

That's a remarkably quick period of time to get four seasons out, obviously, and the show has stood out as one of, if not the single best reason to get Disney+ here in the UK thanks to that hookup with FX. It's a delightful series, and extremely digestible thanks to often quite short episodes, and now we've got a sense of what to expect from its final season.

One of the criticisms of later seasons of The Bear has been that it tends to retread the same territory, with the core cast enduring some calamity from a maintenance perspective, then just about coming together by the end to make an important night go off okay. Main characters like Carmy and Syd, meanwhile, increasingly get frayed mentally, with their ability to work together constructively always looking suspect.

Well, don't expect a radical change of direction in Season 5 – the trailer makes it clear that The Bear (the in-show restaurant, that is) will have at least one huge problem. It looks like crazy weather will bring a wild flood with it to the place, and test everyone to their limit while they try to deal with it at a time when the restaurant simply cannot afford to stay closed.

Disney+

It'll be fascinating to see how brutal or kind the ending of the show ends up being – at a time when many of us know full well that restaurants and the wider service industry are under huge pressure around the world. Will Carmy's dream restaurant rescue itself from financial oblivion, or is it moreso a case of "one last hurrah"?

We'll know when the last season airs on 26 June, so if you're not subscribed to Disney+ already you'll want to set a reminder to change that nearer the end of the month. This is one of those finales that likely will have a major surprise or two up its sleeve, if only in the form of one more wild cameo. Don't be against it!

The neverending quest for streaming supremacy is one that surely consumes execs at both Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. The latter is the world's biggest streaming service, but it knows full well that it can't rest on its laurels if it wants to stay that way. So, each and every week it and Prime Video race to put up more, better new content for people to watch.

If you're looking at a relatively clear schedule of evenings this week, and you're wondering what new material might be arriving on either platform for you to watch, you're in luck. I've combed through the release schedules to pick out the three new arrivals on Prime Video and Netflix that you need to know about, and you'll find them here with trailers and release dates for your convenience.

Every Year After

Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video from 10 June

Amazon's almost certainly backing a winning horse in the form of Every Year After, which adapts a best-selling romance novel and looks like it could spawn a new franchise all on its own. It stars a young woman who's back in the small town she used to spend her summers in, and unexpectedly finds herself reconnecting with the ex-boyfriend she bonded with back then.

He's got a new partner, though, and she's having trouble figuring out what she wants from life, which is almost certainly the foundation for a pretty compelling tussle between what they want and what they think is right. Expect some seriously steamy moments and plenty of anguish in this new show dropping midweek.

Outlast: The Jungle

Streaming on: Netflix from 10 June

Netflix isn't the only streaming service that likes to take turns at competing with hugely long-established shows from network TV, and this new reality TV series looks like it's aimed directly at Survivor, which is an institution in the US. It puts a load of very beautiful people into challenges that will test their endurance and teamwork.

From raft-building to hunting and gathering, it looks like some of the challenges on show will be really tough, but the really interesting side of things is the more inter-personal one. With alliances quickly forming but rules allowing for team-switching whenever you like, people's loyalties are likely to be pretty fluid.

The Rest Is Football

Streaming on: Netflix from 10 June

In case you're living under a rock, it's the World Cup starting this week, which means the ultimate feast for football fans. Gary Lineker's podcast empire has seen him go from strength to strength since leaving the BBC, and now he's been licensed by Netflix to produce daily podcasts in video form, reacting to the biggest games and talking about those still to come.

With co-hosts Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, he's going to welcome a wide array of impressive footballing guests, too, and the episodes will come out at 6AM every morning, making this the perfect way to start your footballing day if you're in the UK. Lineker's media empire might only just be getting started, frankly.

My favourite sci-fi show on TV is about to return, and its trailer confirms some pretty big twists from Apple TV

I've been flying this flag for a couple of years now – if you haven't already grabbed yourself an Apple TV subscription so that you can check out its frankly unbelievable slate of sci-fi shows and movies, you really need to. One of the jewels in that crown, in my opinion, is Silo, which takes a more subdued and pared-back approach to the genre, and makes it work brilliantly.

The show's just about to start its third season (on 3 July), and now we've got a proper trailer running through some of what we can expect to see. It confirms that Juliette will be back in the main silo again, but also that she'll be dealing with a very new challenge – getting her memories back. I've embedded that trailer below for you to check out.

Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) is back in the silo, then, and has semi-pariah, semi-blessed status as the first person to ever go out and come back in alive – after a brush with an incinerator. She's lost her memory of that outing, though, which is fairly crucial since she learnt more than one thing that would change her underground society's understanding of itself.

Meanwhile, as she struggles to get a grip on what happened to her, the situation in the silo is getting more heated. We've seen more than one uprising be quelled at this point, but there's got to be a threshold where the people's demands for answers start to break through. We're poised to learn more about the secret design of the silo's surveillance project and governors.

Apple TV

Meanwhile, we'll also get more and more insight into how the world actually got to the point where its only survivors are living in underground vaults. The flashback sequences in the second season were fascinating but perhaps a little underexplored – now we're clearly going to get more, and I'm gagging to find out some of the politics behind this particular apocalypse.

Some people felt (fairly) that Silo's second season dragged a little, especially with Juliette taken off into her own little slow-moving side story, and I'm hoping this new run of episodes will have taken that feedback into account. If we can get into revelations a little more quickly, we could be heading into one of the best sci-fi seasons in recent memory.

Apple TV's new Anya Taylor-Joy thriller looks so high-budget, I thought it was a movie for sure

Apple TV knows how the game is played, and in the world of streaming the biggest way to secure success is to reel in some big stars. Apple already had some sort of good relationship going with Anya Taylor-Joy after last year's The Gorge, which did some seriously striking numbers. Now they're teaming up again, on Lucky, which got its first proper trailer this week.

After my first watch of that trailer, which I've embedded below, I would have fairly confidently bet on the project being a movie, since it looks really high-budget and interesting visually, but we're in lucky. It's actually a series, which means we'll get way more runtime to enjoy if it ends up being a hit when it arrives on 15 July.

Taylor-Joy looks like she's very much the star at the centre of this show, rather than it being more of an ensemble piece. She plays Lucky, who's grown up in a fairly unconventional way, being trained up by her father (Timothy Olyphant) to run cons and get away with some seriously big scores.

She isn't all that keen on keeping up a life of crime, and might even be tempted to get out and go straight, but that wish gets a lot more complicated when she wakes up one morning to find her husband missing, and their latest batch of cash missing. That husband's mother just happens to be a crime boss in her own right, played by Annette Bening, and she seems not to be too fond of Lucky.

Apple TV

It's fairly clear from the way the trailer unfolds that this will all add up to Lucky going on the run, whether she's just trying to keep her head above water, or whether she's got a plan to get the money she lost back, and find her husband at the same time. With the FBI on her tail as well as the mob, she's got a lot to juggle.

Luckily, Taylor-Joy looks like she's putting in another highly committed performance, and it seems quite action-packed too. We see car chases, foot chases, gunfights and more. That makes me hope this could be a proper hit for Apple TV, at a time when there's not actually all that much to watch.

If you're interested in the business behind streaming, here's one tiny, perhaps obvious little trick. You can broadly tell how much power a showrunner or writer has by whether they get a mention in the full title of a show. Tyler Perry's a great example, since his output almost always has his name attached, and now you can add thriller-writer Harlan Coben to the elite, too.

Harlan Coben's I Will Find You might be known by just I Will Find You by 99% of the people who end up watching it, but that doesn't stop the fact that the author's name is clearly a big deal at Netflix after a series of successful outings for the streamer. This new show got a proper full trailer this week, and what a scary-looking time it promises to be!

The show stars Sam Worthington as David, a grieving father who's been convicted for killing his son, while knowing that he did no such thing. When he's approached in prison by a visitor, he's initially reluctant but then unable to ignore her. She's Rachel, played by Severance's Britt Lower, and she seems to have proof that his son never died in the first place.

What was treated as a murder might have been a kidnapping, and that means David has to immediately consider how he's going to get out of prison to start investigating. From the looks of this trailer, the show will therefore divide into a few genres, with at least part of its runtime shaping up as a Prison Break-style escape story.

Once he's out, it would seem we'll be getting more of a traditional mystery thriller from then on, but there are some really intriguing questions floating around even just from the teaser and this new trailer. One of them is quite who Rachel is, and why she knows so much about David's case, and the bigger question is who exactly the abductor is, and what their motivation could be.

It's all very enticing stuff, and I have a pretty good feeling that this will do numbers on Netflix when it comes out – it has all the right ingredients to be a mainstream success. It drops on 18 June, so it's about two weeks away, which means you don't have long to wait to see if I'm right.

Apple TV's bringing back Colin Farrell for more of a show that I thought was almost certainly dead

When the first season of Sugar ended on Apple TV, I wouldn't really have guessed that we'd be getting any more of Colin Farrell's disturbed private investigator. While the show was a really interesting one, and Farrell's commitment was pretty clear, it didn't do all that well critically. Still, it must have got the numbers Apple was hoping for, because we're about to get a second season after all.

A new trailer came out this week ahead of a premiere date of 19 June, and it looks like potentially a slightly more tied-down season than the last, focusing a little less on Sugar's own ongoing crisis and a little more on the case he's working on. It's a classic missing person mystery, with some fun details to explore.

Sugar's looking into the disappearance of the brother of a promising young boxer making his way through bouts, and it looks a little like that brother might not actually want to be found. Given that Sugar's also trying to locate his own missing sister, there are clearly parallels to be explored here.

He's going to have to dive into gang-run underbellies to get closer to figuring out what's happening; that much is clear. The show continues to have a really fun visual identity, too, with a pulpish commitment to looking grimy and sun-baked, fitting given its LA setting.

Apple TV

This time we'll also clearly get more time looking into dirty cops, which again is growing into a theme for the show. As Sugar gets closer to the truth, he'll almost certainly get into more and more potential trouble with police officers who're heavily incentivised to keep him off the scent.

If you never checked out Sugar, I think this is probably a pretty good prompt to do so, and it's another example of how Apple seems to be pretty far-sighted and patient when it commissions shows. While viewer numbers are likely the ultimate guide, its willingness to renew flawed shows like this one is heartening.

Netflix's massive new Oscar Isaac movie looks like a fever dream, but that might be a very good thing

Netflix just unveiled one heck of an interesting-looking original movie, and its cast alone makes it easily worth paying attention to, even if you don't have time to check out its frankly bonkers trailer. In the Hand of Dante is coming on 24 June, and promises to tell an era-hopping story of obsession with a deliberate arch noirish tone.

The movie stars Oscar Isaac as Nick, seemingly a modern-day scholar obsessed with the works of Dante Alighieri, whose most famous work was the Divine Comedy, in which he described the nine circles of hell. Nick dreams of knowing the unknowable about the great writer, but never expects to have his wish answered.

In a noir-inspired black and white timeline, which seems to be set in the present day, Nick is accosted by the literal Italian mob in New York and offered the chance to find and study the lost original manuscript of The Divine Comedy, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity fraught with danger.

On the way to finding it, he'll clearly fall in with Gal Gadot as a femme fatale, and once he gets his hands on it, all manner of shenanigans will break loose. What's more interesting, though, is the fact that we'll also get glimpses of historical scenes, in which the mainline cast take on new roles, with Isaac filling in as Dante himself, for instance. These scenes are contrasted with the present day by being presented in vivid colour, too.

Netflix

The whole thing looks completely surreal and quite beautiful, but the cast list bears dwelling on. We've got, alongside Isaac and Gadot, Gerard Butler, John Malkovich, Al Pacino, Jason Momoa and, most amazingly of all, Martin Scorsese in yet another cameo, this time in a nearly ludicrous Gandalf-like beard and long-hair combo.

That's one heck of a list of actors, and it's enough to make me curious about the film despite frankly very middling early reviews. It's sitting on a hugely dividied 43% score on Rotten Tomatoes after reviews from film festivals last year, which might just mean that it's interesting enough to bear some proper inspection if you have a Netflix subscription.

Streaming never lets up – and with the heat finally dissipating here in the UK, it's a lot more bearable to imagine staying in to binge some TV this week than last week. If you're subscribed to either Netflix or Prime Video, which are very much the two biggest streaming services out there, then you might be wondering if there's anything new coming to either.

Well, I've gone and looked into that very question for you, and found some pretty juicy news, ensuring that you should be able to pick from the three highlights below. They run a gamut of genres, too, so there should be enough variety to keep anyone satisfied. You'll find a trailer for each, too, to help you get a sense for what it offers.

Clarkson's Farm Season 5

Streaming on: Prime Video from 3 June

I'm fairly sure that when Amazon greenlit Clarkson's Farm for the first time, years ago, it probably didn't anticipate the show going on to be this sort of massive success, and a franchise that probably drives Prime subscriptions in its own right. It's become a sensation, and has launched Clarkson into the hearts of many non-motorheads for the first time.

He's still a rambunctious fellow, though, and has sharp edges, as his presence and input into massive farming protests in recent UK history demonstrate – and these will be covered by the new season of the show. He's become a lightning rod for debate about the industry, and the new episodes will likely keep that ball rolling.

Office Romance

Streaming on: Netflix from 5 June

Sometimes Netflix knows that people don't actually want movies that shoot for the stars and look to collect awards and acclaim – they want silly romances between beautiful people against pretty backdrops. That's what's offered up by Office Romance, which has a very utilitarian name and stars Brett Goldstein opposite Jennifer Lopez.

He's a lawyer working for her, but sparks won't take long to fly between them and the romance that the title hints at is clearly going to explode fairly quickly. In fact, this doesn't look like a movie that takes itself particularly seriously, so strap in if you want a nice, uncomplicated story to enjoy one evening this week.

The Legend of Vox Machina S4

Streaming on: Prime Video from 3 June

Another Prime Video franchise that has done better than I would ever have anticipated is Vox Machina, which adapts the first Critical Role campaign into an animated show and makes it even easier to watch and digest. It's tremendous fun, making for a far more concise story than that mammoth broadcast was.

Of course, you'll want to watch the previous three seasons before tucking into these new episodes, but the arrival of a new run is always a great opportunity to discover a show for the first time, so this could get a swell of interest. At a time when D&D is bigger than ever, Vox Machina looks like it's riding the wave cannily.

Netflix can't ever really let a month go by without some pretty major additions – it's a massive streaming platform and knows full well that it needs to keep people's attentions. The best way to do that? Get new shows and movies onto its library all the time, ensuring that no week is empty.

Each month, therefore, I spend a little time before the calendar changes, checking out whatever Netflix is adding in the four-ish weeks to come. For those of you wondering what you'll get as part of your subscription in June, this is the place to be. I've picked out five highlights for you, and down below you'll find all of them with their trailers and release dates.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2

Streaming from: 25 June

It's been a long old wait for the second season of Avatar:The Last Airbender's live-action remake. Netflix has high hopes for the show, and it clearly has a huge budget, but you've got to hope the gap before next season doesn't end up being this same length of time.

Still, for those who enjoyed the first set of episodes, this looks like a pretty terrific step-up in scale, as the show widens its scope and escalates its stakes. The element-bending powers on show are even more amazing than before, and our slightly aged-up characters all look like they'll have the familiar and satisfying arcs from the original cartoon. Expect this one to do huge numbers when it arrives late in June.

I Will Find You

Streaming from: 18 June

Netflix has become a real factory when it comes to thriller series, and one of its most proven methods has been to adapt best-selling novels – the sort that you see in airports for those looking to enjoy a barnstorming read while flying long-haul. It's a really great way to get a great plot, but you have to pair it with the right actors and tone to really stick the landing.

This show takes a Harlan Coben story and puts Sam Worthington in the lead role as a father who's in jail for the murder of his son – expect he not only didn't kill him, but it would seem that nobody did. What begins as a murder mystery might morph into a kidnapping case, but with a whole bunch of personal feelings clouding up the characters' objectivity. Sign us up for this one!

Office Romance

Streaming from: 5 June

Sometimes Netflix knows it can just go for the low-hanging fruit, and this rom-com seems like it isn't shooting for the stars. It stars none other than Jennifer Lopez as a high-flying boss, literally. She runs an airline and has absolutely no time to waste on frivolous romances, with a reputation for hard management and low patience.

That all changes, though, when Brett Goldstein walks into her office as a new lawyer for the company. They have an instant spark, and it's fairly clear from the spoilerish trailer above that they're not exactly going to sit on their hands and ignore their urges. This seems to be a classic romantic tale, and might even be less rom-com and more pure rom.

Little Brother

Streaming from: 26 June

Well, for those looking for the "pure com" equivalent to the above option, here's one for you. Little Brother looks like it might have just come from an extended experiment in which John Cena let longtime absurdist comic Eric Andre see if he could make him break into laughter while shooting scenarios, since the movie sees the former very much playing the straight man to the latter's wild card.

Cena's character accidentally finds himself reconnecting with someone he last knew at school, discovering that Andre's just as weird as ever, and watching his entire life start to revolve around this one totally bizarre dude. The movie's chances of being genuinely great are slim, but Cena is always game and you never know what Andre's going to pull, so we'll be watching this with interest.

Voicemails for Isabelle

My final pick is the rom-com we've been looking for. This movie stars Zoey Deutch as a young woman grieving the loss of her sister and using voicemail messages to her now-defunct number as a way to feel connected to the sibling she lost. What she doesn't realise is that the number has now been reassigned, and that the man of her dreams is listening in.

When he figures out why he's been getting these voicemails out of nowhere, he starts to wonder if he can help her out, and his innocent intentions quickly blossom into what looks like a fairly swooning love affair. Sure, it's a lot like You've Got Mail, but that's no real bad thing, and a charming pair of lead actors could make sure this one ends up being a great little bit of fun.

It's always nice to see an actor you rate doing well, and I think Netflix has found itself a really reliable romcom performer in the form of Zoey Deutch. She's already anchored one of my favourite little cult Netflix movies, opposite Glenn Powell in Set It Up, and now she's starring in another Netflix movie some eight years later.

Deutch plays Jill, one of two main characters in Voicemails for Isabelle, which might not have the catchiest title of all time, but does look like a great bit of romantic fun nonetheless. Netflix gave the movie a proper trailer this week, ahead of a release date of 19 June, and I'm quite taken with it.

Jill is a young woman grieving the loss of her sister, Isabelle, and has found a relatively sensible way to process the loss; she still phones Isabelle's old number every so often and leaves her voicemails updating her on what's going on in her life, including both her professional travails as a chef and the challenges of modern dating.

Little does she know, though, that the number has been reassigned, and an extremely eligible and handsome man is listening in sheepishly. He's Nick Robinson as Wes, and when he starts to figure out her routine he can't help but introduce himself. The trailer doesn't exactly disguise the fact that they'll end up falling for each other, either.

Still, we'll clearly get some tension in the middle act, as Wes wrestles with the fact that Jill doesn't know he can listen to her voicemails, and confronting her with that information is likely to not go down all too well. Whether they can get past that isn't too hard to guesstimate, but the journey is always most of the fun in this sort of heady romcom.

The trailer makes its own comparisons to You've Got Mail, one of the most imitated romantic movies ever, so I don't have to – but in Deutch I think Netflix has one of the few actors who can hold a candle to Meg Ryan's level of chutzpah. Here's hoping the film lives up to that lofty comparison when it arrives in a couple of weeks' time.
